18. The beast the shouldn't exist

The creature lunged toward them with a guttural, filthy growl. Its body was half-human, half-something else… its long, crooked teeth glinting under the moonlight and torchlight. Its eyes were blood-red, not with life but with hunger—hunger for blood.

Saren immediately darted to the side and shouted,

"This isn't human! Ryu, this… this thing was made by someone!"

Kael raised his sword and slashed at the creature, but the strike barely cut through its rotting, toughened skin, drawing only a trickle of dark blood. The creature roared like a bellows and shoved Kael hard. He fell to the ground, his shoulder scraped and bleeding.

Elira cried out,

"Kael!"

She tried to rush to him, but Ryu extended an arm, stopping her. His face was calm, completely unfazed.

"Elira… stay back."

The creature's blood-red eyes locked on Ryu, and with another feral roar, it lunged at him, moving so fast the air itself seemed to slice.

Ryu simply shifted one step to the side, his movement so precise that the creature's attack only brushed the edge of his clothes. He struck once, a light punch to its neck—simple, yet the sound was like a hammer against stone. The creature staggered back but didn't fall. It roared louder, angrier, and pounced again.

Kael, pulling himself up, shouted,

"Ryu! Its body is like iron! You can't take it down easily!"

Ryu's eyes studied the creature for a brief second before a faint, dangerous smile appeared on his face.

"Iron or stone… everything falls."

The creature swung again, but this time Ryu caught its strike. His hand gripped just below its jagged teeth, and with a single twist, he flipped it upside down and slammed it onto the ground. The impact echoed so loudly that the catacomb walls trembled.

Saren stared wide-eyed.

"This man… he's not fighting like a human!"

The creature tried to rise, but Ryu calmly pressed his foot onto its neck, adding just enough pressure. The monster's growls began to weaken.

Elira called out, worry in her voice,

"Ryu… if you kill it, we won't learn anything!"

Ryu glanced at her, then eased his foot slightly. The creature growled faintly, writhing on the ground. Ryu crouched beside it, gripping its neck with one hand, and spoke in a low, steady tone.

"Who did this to you? You were human once… who changed you?"

The creature's blood-red eyes flickered for a moment, trembling. Then it whispered a single word, broken and guttural—

"...Master…"

And in the very next instant, its body convulsed violently. Its eyes glowed brighter red before, suddenly, it exploded—scattering into countless pieces, vanishing into the air as if erased by an unseen force.

A chilling silence filled the catacombs.

Kael bent down, picking up a small red crystal left behind, and growled,

"Who… who could do something like this?"

Ryu's eyes glinted coldly as he stared at the crystal.

"Whoever it is… they're waiting for us."

Saren gave a smirk under his mask, but there was a hint of fear in his eyes.

"'Master'… looks like whatever's happening in these catacombs is just the beginning."

Ryu stood up, his calm voice cutting through the silence.

"Not the beginning… this was just to lure us in."

And from deeper within the catacombs, a faint sound echoed—like something… or someone… waiting for them.
