The sky hung heavy above the forest estate, clouds too swollen with secrets to break.

Inside the ancient manor, Lucian sat beside the hearth, the heat brushing his skin though it never truly warmed him. Kyrell lay wrapped in thick blankets by the fire, cheeks flushed with the last remnants of vulnerability.

He was sleeping again.

Lucian watched the rise and fall of his chest, wondering if Kyrell's dreams still held fragments of the broken past—if Damien's presence had rekindled instincts best left buried.

The kiss they'd shared haunted him more than anything Damien could say. Because it was real.

And real things could shatter.

His hand trembled as he reached for Kyrell's. He stopped inches short.

He couldn't touch him again—not until he confessed the one truth that could ruin it all.

That the memory Kyrell was missing…

Wasn't stolen.

It was erased.

By him.

Elsewhere…

The broken glass still littered the floor of Mara's chambers.

She stood barefoot among it, crimson slivers biting into her heels like truth. Her reflection was a blur in the shattered mirror—too many versions of herself, and none worth clinging to.

> "He chose him."

The words fell flat, not like an accusation—but like a sentence.

Mara turned as a voice entered her door.

> "Still bleeding for someone else's heart?" came a silky, masculine voice.

It wasn't Silas.

No—this one was younger. Sleeker. With eyes too empty to trust.

> "What do you want?" she spat.

> "Only what you want, my lady," he said, stepping into view. "Revenge."

> "Who are you?"

> "A friend of Silas. But don't worry," he smirked, "I never liked him much either."

Mara narrowed her eyes.

> "I don't make deals with shadows."

> "You don't have to," he said, walking toward her with slow, unhurried steps. "Just accept that the only way to survive a god's love… is to burn him first."

Mara flinched as he stopped in front of her. His hand rose—not to touch, but to hold up something small and silver.

A sigil.

One she recognized.

> "He took your heart and handed it to a creature he swore to kill. Don't you think it's time someone bled for that?"

Mara didn't answer.

But she didn't turn away.

Later That Night…

Kyrell stirred by the fire. His fingers reached instinctively toward Lucian's, and for once, Lucian didn't pull away.

> "You're cold," Kyrell murmured.

> "Always."

> "Lie to me."

Lucian looked up.

> "Say it again," Kyrell said. "That you'll protect me."

Lucian's throat tightened, but he whispered it anyway.

> "I'll protect you."

Even if it means protecting you from myself.

Even if it means losing you when the truth comes out.
