The night didn't scream.

It whispered.

Through trembling glass. Through roots that pulsed beneath the manor's stone floors. Through the silence that suddenly wasn't silence anymore.

Kyrell stood in the greenhouse, alone now, fingers dusted with soil, breath fogging against the stained glass panels. He couldn't sleep. Not since that kiss. Not since the apology that felt like it held more grief than guilt.

And then he saw it—

A shard of glass buried at the base of a half-dead orchid.

Dark. Wrong. Pulsing.

Curiosity—or fate—drew him closer. He touched it.

And the world cracked open.

---

Flash.

Blood.

Hands.

Chains.

Lucian, standing above him in a dark chamber, eyes burning red.

> "I had to, Kyrell. You were becoming one of them."

Kyrell's body convulsing. His mouth open in a scream that wouldn't come.

Lucian slicing through his chest—not to kill, but to extract.

> "The hunter in you must be buried."

Pain. Fire. And then—

> "Sleep now. And forget."

---

Flash.

Lucian cradling him after the wound, whispering promises he no longer remembered making.

> "You'll wake in the forest, and you'll find me again. The right way this time."

> "And if I don't?"

> "Then I'll come find you."

---

Kyrell staggered backward, fingers clutching at his own skin as if it could peel away the lie lodged beneath it.

His scream echoed through the manor.

Lucian was there in seconds.

> "What did you do?" he whispered.

> "What did you do to me?" Kyrell roared.

---

The confrontation wasn't gentle.

Kyrell shoved him hard enough to bruise, to bleed.

> "You erased me."

> "I protected you—"

> "No, you rewrote me."

Lucian's jaw clenched. His voice low.

> "You were spiraling. Turning. Something ancient was waking in you."

> "So you thought kissing me after cutting me open was redemption?"

Silence.

And from the doorway—

Mara.

> "He didn't just kiss you, Kyrell," she said, voice ice. "He caged you."

Kyrell's eyes widened.

> "You were watching—"

> "We all were," she snapped. "We begged him to kill you. But he couldn't. Because he's weak. Because you're his ruin."

Lucian stepped between them, fangs visible.

> "Enough, Mara."

> "Or what?" she hissed. "You'll erase me too?"

The air turned to frost.

Kyrell's hands were trembling. His breath shallow.

Lucian reached for him.

> "Let me explain."

> "No," Kyrell whispered. "Let me feel it."

And with that, he turned—walking past them both, barefoot into the night.

Leaving behind the shattered remains of what might have been love.

Later That Night…

Lucian sat in his study, alone, hands bloodied from punching the stone wall. Not healing. Not this time.

And Damien's voice came softly from the shadowed archway.

> "You could've told him sooner."

> "I was trying to give him mercy."

> "No," Damien said. "You were trying to keep him yours."
