Chapter 62 Avery Eve

Amber sat at an office desk with paper stacks piled to the ceiling. It was not an exaggeration she had drown herself with work while Jay was gone a tiring way to get her mind off of him. Dark circles were evidently showing underneath her hazel eyes, and her face was paler then before. Her sleep schedule was as messed up as it can be, and she barely has enough time to fit a proper food into her diet.

In the corner of the house Roy was sulking at the state of his daughter. When he visited her in the study he could not see his own daughter's face because of the load of the damn papers! He inwardly cursed Jay for leaving just like that. What's worse is that that boy Jay didn't bother to contact anyone! His number was deleted, and no one knows about his whereabouts.

He cursed Jay once more before getting up to check on Amber.

"Amber sweetie? Are you in there?" He gently pushed the dooropen as quietly as he can.

"Hmm."

"Come one sweetie invited some friends of mine and they're coming over with their family for dinner."

"I'm full." She lied. It was the middle of the day and she still hasn't touched any food yet. Of course being her father, Roy knew that Amber was lying.

"Don't lie to me sweetheart. Especially with that pure mouth of yours." He hid is irritated face and calmed himself down repeatedly telling himself that he was once like Amber when Avery went missing in action.

He can never forget that feeling of guilt and emptiness inside his heart. It was like his heart had stopped beating, the warm blood turning ice cold. His lungs no longer seemed to supply anymore then a few quickened short breaths as his legs gave from underneath him.

"Sweetheart you're eating dinner with me and our guest this evening. No buts."

"Hmm." She gave a short hum of giving in to her father's whines.

"Alright still eat your lunch though. I'll send someone to bring you food." He left the study and paced down to the kitchen asking the chefs to warm up some meals.

... ... ...

In the study Amber put down the handful of papers from her hands and gave her tired eyes a rest. It's been almost a week and he still hasn't called. Nothing about where he is or if he's still alive. It was the same feeling when her mother went on a long mission and never came back. Although she was young at the time she still remembered the face of her father paling and him falling on to his knees sobbing.

...Her mother was from a Military veteran family. She herself, was a high ranking officer of the Military. She graduated from a Military school and went straight to serve as a Major, climbing up the ranks in no time. Before she went missing, she had been put in charge of a high ranking secret Military squad made just for the infiltration of a corrupt government.

It was dangerous she knew, but it was her duty to serve the country. She went and never came back. According to the reports of the squad whom made it out, they fell into the awaiting trap after their information was leaked by an inside spy. One of the man who lost his left arm, was thanking Avery for her bravery in combat.

When he panicked as he lost a portion of his arm, Avery was busy making sure everyone got out of the collapsing building. He couldn't move as the pain of losing his arm was overwhelming him, it was then that Avery jumped in at the last second tossing him out and falling under with the remains of the fallen building.

The man cried as he thanked Avery in front of an empty casket, but he mostly whimpered out 'I'm so sorry' to little Amber who didn't understand what was going on and why her mother haven't come back yet.

The man pleaded sorry over and over again saying that it was his fault that Avery didn't make it out alive. The worst thing is, they couldn't find her corpse no matter how long they had digged up the rubble. That news to Roy had planted a seed of hope inside his empty heart. Roy wondered if it was better to have her corpse in the casket instead.

A feeling that could be a savior or the poison to someone's mental health; the feeling of hope. It can easily bring great joy to one's life. But when that hope is shattered, it will break the remnants of one's lifeline.

But so far; the hope is not gone, just faded.
