Chapter 3: Through our eyes

The gate opened, a loud deafening sound of the gun rang across the land . Keeping the gate open wasn't safe, but the truth was that they all were in trouble. Being that they were going to be on their own they had to take responsibility, in other words getting a job. "No way Jose" Steph wasn't really interested. "I'm not getting involved in any family business that requires killing" Steph made it clear that she wasn't fit for killing. She didn't love being bored, but it sounded okay in her opinion. After all, not doing anything else but walking was enough work. Matt glanced over to watch for anything hostile, then took out his little "hand-me-down" flashlight. It worked great, but never perfect. A good mile down, they decided to put down their things and rest til sunlight.

This was a danger because spirits lurked around at this time, looking for bodies to possess.

Not only that but zombs existed too.

This world was no longer a wonderful place, it was pure hell.

-6:20am-

Waking up, Steph and Matt make their way towards Rolesville, a town just a few miles ahead.

"So Matt...um...how do you know so much" Steph questioned. She's never been to school, she always would learn from other people if anything, that's what she's been doing for her entire life.

"Well, in class we would go to learn about different states and we would learn how to to read a map...so that's how I got used to it".

Matt's blue eyes shined like the sunrise in the sky.

As they continued to walk, Matt pulled out a wrinkly news paper that came from the town of Asheville, just east of Rolesville. Looking at it, he began sorting with his eyes on what jobs they could take on in order to get rations of money.

Matt would begin naming options that "pay good".

" Locksmith work" Matt offered. "There's pretty good pay". Even though Steph was looking for good pay, she wasn't interested. Locks were pretty important only because they keep people out of course. But not even that, locks with spiritual barriers took a lot of work, only because there was too much to learn in little time. "What about a repellent worker". "No way, never" Steph replied.

Even though being a repellent worker is beneficial, they both would smell awfully bad, and that's something Steph would definitely not approve of.

-2 Miles later-

Walking along the road, something caught Steph's eye. "Do you see that" questioned Steph.

"Yeah...I do, and it's terrifying" Matt said in response. They found the nearest tree to hide behind, not that it helped but it made them feel safe. Getting a better view, Steph figures out what it is. "It's a zomb, my grandmother told me all about these things". Steph's grandmother was an adventurer known as "dare dog". They called her this because she was like her own guard dog, and would attack anything that was in her way.

Jumping from all her flash backs, they hear a roaring sound familiar to a gunshot.

Boom. Bang. BANG.

Quickly and quietly they scanned the area to see what was going on. "Wait here" Matt said calmly.

With worry in her eyes, Steph agreed to wait as she pulled out her gun.

BOOM.

Steph started to panic. "Shit...is he dead".

She started to question herself. The first rule she learned was to never go alone. She abandoned that rule. In consequence, he's dead.

Or at least she thought.
