Chapter 23: The Interrogation

Kathleen Remes' POV

We were sitting on the sofas as I was wrapped in a blanket that has been given by Kai to me. We were being questioned by the Interpol police regarding the assassination. one of the Portuguese royal members has been shot on the arm.

"so, let me ask you, were you pursuing the criminal when the room was dark?" A blonde female was asking me. I believed her name was Kiara.

"yes, I was the one that pursued him. I did not wait for any reinforcement as I think that I would catch him," I said as I was looking at her. she arched her eyebrow before she wrote something inside her notepad.

"so, anything else that you might want to share?" She asked me before her partner showed up behind her.

"Everything has been cleared. There was no trace of the bullet that was being used in the room. But they have some trace of the element at the bed," the black-headed man has shown us the evidence that was being found in our room.

"do you know about this exists in your room?" Kiara asked me. I looked at it. no, it can't be. I gulped as I don't know what to say the truth or not.

"I do," Kai's voice was coming from the other side of the room as he just said his statement to the local police.

"and where do you might see this before or maybe in the room?" Kiara asked him before he took it from her hand and looked at it.

"it looks like a ring," I said as I pointed out the circle shape that was closed together.

"it is," Kai said grimly.

"so, what can you tell us from that ring?" Kiara asked him. He looked at me before he looked at the agents.

"it was my great-uncle's. Uncle Fenn, he was supposed to be in America as my great aunt was having a conference for her conference about her thesis. so, I don't know how it would have fallen here," he said as he put his hand onto my lower back. I snuggled against him for his support.

"so, you mean to say that someone from your family was involved here? You don't think it would belong to you?" The male agent asked him. He shook his head.

"no, I don't have the luxury of that. besides, my cousin was the one that always sticks around him," he answered.

of course. Chris. He has been eager to say that he would do anything for Katherine. Anything even that's mean death or worse, murder.

the agents looked at each other before they shrugged it off.

"we will continue to investigate. In the meantime, don't worry about your little heads. We take it from here," Kiara said as she went to her partner and talked to him in a foreign language. I did not catch what they were saying but from their grim expression, this will be a long investigation.

"hey," Kai's soft voice was getting me back from my thoughts. I looked into his eyes before he drew me into his arms.

"it's alright, everything will be fine," he said as he kissed my head before he looked at me. We looked at the agents before they disappeared from our room.

And of course, everything was not fine. We have been summoned to meet the King and Queen of Hungary. I was a nervous wreck. What if they knew that I went after the assassin and they might assume that I was working with him? God, please help me.

"Ah, Kathleen, Kai, please come in," Uncle Peter said as he waved at us. We were in his private room and the guards closed the door.

"your majesty—" he looked at me with a death glare. I cleared my throat before speaking again.

"Uncle Peter," he smiled after that, "we were so sorry to say for the Portuguese guest that have been shot through the assassination attempt. Was he alright?" I asked him as I was looking at him.

"it's not a he, it's a she," he corrected me.

"right. Was she alright then?" I asked him again. He sighed before pinching his nose bridge.

"yes, her bodyguard has come and let her rest in his bedroom. I know how the people might think about that, the bodyguard has something special with Her Royal Highness," he said as he gestured us to take a seat. I went to take a seat in front of him and Kai next to me.

"So, what of the occasion?" I asked him. The servants have been kind enough to bring some tea and biscuits for the time being.

"leave us," uncle Peter ordered his staff to leave. They went quietly before he went to serve us the tea.

"let me," I volunteered as it was kind of the tea party that my father used to do. I was the one that always helps him out.

"thank you, my dear," he said before he looked at Kai as I was serving us tea and biscuits for each.

"So, do you know why I have called you?" He asked me. I was waiting for him to get mad or might be throwing some tantrums and ordered us to the dungeon.

none of that was happening.

"your father called me. He stated that he heard the news and other things that have been happening," he said as he looked at me. I cleared my throat before smiling at him.

"What are the other things?" I dared to ask him. He just laughed before he took the tea and went to sip it.

"well, you may not know about me, my dear but I know you. You are my goddaughter. your father has appointed me as your godfather. Isn't that thrilling news?" He asked as he arched his eyebrow at me.

I smiled awkwardly as I just now about this. How come my father never told me about this? Oh yeah, because he did not care that much about me.

"I don't know such a thing. Surely my father would never do that, I was the least favorite of his daughters," I said as I picked up the tea. I sipped on it for a little before setting it aside.

"well, your father might be holding something against you, my dear, but believe me when I said this to you, you are his chosen one. Compare to the competition, where she was nothing to you," he said as he looked at me. I was not aware that Kai has been holding my hand and I was not breathing.

"breath, my love," he whispered into my ear. I blushed at the intimate contact in front of Uncle Peter. I don't want him to think otherwise.

"ah, young love, such a wonderful thing. I can never have enough of my wife but I can see it your eyes. They were shining," he said before Kai asked him the golden question.

"do you know who was behind all this?" He asked uncle Peter. He grimaced.

"yes, unfortunately, we have some lead that might be saying who was behind all of this," he said. I was at the edge of my seat as I looked at him.

"and you think you can hide the fact that you were being watched. I might not be knowing all the stuff but you were being followed by someone very close to you," he said as he switched from English to Russian like it was nothing.

"what do you mean?" I replied in the same tongue. He smiled at me.

"well, it looks like Aaron did teach you something after all," he said. I just shrugged before Kai spoke.

"tell us, what did you know about the attempt?" He asked uncle Peter. He looked at Kai as he was accessing him because he was speaking Russian as well.

"ah, so the husband as well. No wonder he was very fond of you," Uncle Peter said that made Kai blushed. His cheeks were growing with pink tints.

"no matter. The thing was that your father has summoned you guys back to Finland and this time, he has insisted to make sure that you guys moved into the Royal Palace," he said as he looked at us. Kai and I looked at each other.

"but the tradition—"

"will be changed and it will be immediately effective. Your father conveyed the message through me. I cannot believe I was being the messenger through you guys. jeez, don't you guys have contact with each other?" He asked me. I blushed. Call me old soul as I don't want to depend on the technology so much. I have my shares.

"now, it is time for you to go," he said as he sat up from the seat. We followed him before a bodyguard came through.

"he will take you to the safe place and you will be leaving immediately. Tell your father I said Hi," he said as I walked out of the room with Kai by my side.

"will do," and with that, he disappeared as the door closed in front of my eyes.
