James gave her a strange look. When Lena saw it, she felt her heart break all over again. "Back before we got engaged, he never looked at me like this!" Lena thought, but any words she had to say were swallowed down her throat.
She tumbled under his gaze, and finally James spoke, "we are not getting engaged again!"
He turned around and began walking away, but Lena grabbed his arm.
"That's not what I'm talking about!" She cried. She really did not want him to walk away.
James twisted his arm out of her hand and turned around to face her, "then what are you talking about?"
He obviously was disinterested in anything she had to say. She was disappointed in him. He used to care about her, but now he is ignoring her.
"What I-I mean is..." She stuttered, "why can't... we b-be friends... li-like we used to be?"
James paused for a moment, and looked at Lena's nervous appearance. She was shivering from head to toe, her head was down, her arms were stiff against her sides. For a moment, he wanted to comfort her, but he decided against it.
He cannot give her any wrong idea. That would be the worst thing he could possibly do. After all, he does not love her; he loves someone else.
He made a point of making clear distinctions between the woman he loves and his friends, but he somehow ended up hurting his best friend.
This was the first time he felt uncertain on what he should do.
