Richard Groove, a son of an ordinary family but with manly looks. He has astigmatism at birth. His parents made him wear glasses and was educated by his parents early on, even before his first year of school. His parents are bookworm, and worked as librarians so Richard was heavily influenced by them and also finds reading books as a hobby.
Maxon, confused with the unfamiliar term, asked Richard. "What are spirits?" Hearing these words made Richard's confidence skyrocket as he knew what to do and say next. His eyeglasses shone with white light and moved his hands up to the nose, reaching his glasses.
"Spirits, are virtually transparent creatures. They are accumulated by the emotions of people. They way they accumulate it is unclear: Spirits may wander and gather positive emotions, but spirits may also feed negative emotions crazily that they would also induce people to produce fear, anxiety, and stress.."
".. Some says spirits help you avoid calamities, but some justified that spirits are bad omen; they bring bad luck. Their origin is unknown and mysterious. Normal human eyes can't see these beings. The only distinction is when you feel something but can't see it, but your guts tell you someone is really there."
Richard gave detailed explanation to what spirits are, he stated it like a knowledgeable professor giving pointers to his students.
"You are still reading those kinds of books, Richard?" Rose questioned. Richard then scratched his head in embarrassment and replied. "We will never know unless we try."
Oliver glanced shortly to both Maxon and Samantha, trying to look at their expressions to see if they are interested. He was then tempted to try since as Richard said, they will never know unless they tried.
"I also want to see if we can really summon spirits, it sure will be fun!" Oliver's curiosity peaked.
Samantha didn't think this the whole spirit summoning is feasible because it breaks common sense, beyond logical comprehension. she was suspicious of the method so she asked a simple question. "How do we summon spirits?"
"Do you see the symbol I made a little bit ago?" Richard then continued. "This is a proper and a simple method in summoning a spirit, or what the book refers as basic spirits."
Maxon's enthusiasm is as the same level as Oliver, the newfound knowledge was like a door opened for his to walk. He wanted to know more so he asked. "Can I see the book?" His eyes lingered to the book that Richard was holding.
Richard was glad that Maxon really liked the topic, so he happily gave the book to the latter and smiled. "As long as you like it."
The book was all centered about spirits. It gave classifications and informations about the spirits. It is so detailed that one would be mistaken if the contents written in the book were real. In summarization of the book, it is classified on three ranks: Lesser Spirits, Greater Spirits, and Grand Spirits. Lesser Spirits had all methods and signals to summon, ranging from the weakest spirit to the strongest spirit of the 'Lesser Spirit' rank. Greater Spirits and Grand Spirits don't need any materials for summoning but to carve a Summoning Array, as stated in the books.
The method of summoning spirits are very unusual and mentioned weird materials. One can find a section in a book that you need to have dozens of books as the main material to summon. The basic spirit is one of the strong spirits of the 'Lesser Spirit' rank. The method of summoning basic spirits is very, very simple. One just have to draw a strange symbol on the floor. The symbol had a star, circles and a bunch of foreign words.
Maxon was so fixated and fascinated by the book that he even forgot his friends were now looking at him for a long time. Breaking the tension, Rose sighed and took the book Maxon read. "Hey, stop reading now. We are going to summon spirits in person so you have to watch it too."
Samantha on the other hand, stared at the drawing on the floor and muttered, "A ritual..."
No one heard her but others have their enthusiasm deepened as they stared at the drawing on the floor in amazement. Richard, thinking everything is done and well prepared, and deeply breathed.
"I'm going to start now."
A long period of silence filled the air. Richard yelled the words he remembered in the book to the symbol. "The spirit of the living, we ask you to come from our calling!"
"..."
"..."
"..."
Nothing happened at all as a minute had already passed by. Richard was impatient as he yelled again. "The spirit of the living, we ask you to come from our calling!"
Two minutes had passed by now but there was no response or a sign. The other kids are getting impatient and are bored already, with the exception of Maxon. Oliver proposed, "Let's play another game." In which the others nodded and agreed.
Richard was downcast and sad that it didn't work. He had thought of this idea a week ago and read the book thoroughly and practiced drawing the symbol. It was all for nothing... but the thought of Maxon still being interested in the book still liven his mood up.
They had played until twelve in the morning and figured that its time to go home and have lunch with their parents. Before they left, Maxon politely asked Richard for the book. "Even if it is fiction, it's nice to read the book." One of the comments of Maxon of the book was this.
They went on their respective tents while Maxon followed Samantha while holding the book. Near Collins' family tent, Samantha's mom, Daisy, saw them walking back home from playing and greeted. "Have you had a fun time kids?"
"I had much fun, Mom. They are really good at games." Clearly it was Samantha who spoke, Maxon nodded and smiled innocently.
Daisy then turned to Maxon and saw a large book in his arms. She was curious and never heard him being a bookworm. "What book are you reading, little guy?"
"It's a book about spirits, auntie. Richard gave it to me. It is very nice book." Maxon spoke politely with his eyes showing enthusiasm.
Without waiting for Maxon to reply, he went inside the tent and instantly started reading it. Daisy outside looked at the tent and sighed deeply. Samantha had no clue to this and asked her mother.
"Mom, where is dad? I wanna help him cook food."
"Follow me, my dearest. I will also make dishes today with you two."
"Yey! Mom is personally going to cook for us!"
