"What do you mean?" Lucy asked confusedly.
"I knew you're innocent, I touched blood when I butchered that asshole. I knew one when I see one!"
"You could be acquitted—"
"Not when you killed a rich bastard!"
the woman snap. "I heard someone talking in the morning, I don't know whom it was meant for, not until I saw you. That young detective argued with the big ass in this department he said you're innocent but the other one asked them to hand off in your case!"
Lucy felt silent while the woman continued.
"Someone is behind it up there, some big ass, I guess. This people are determine to lock you in any possible means. They need someone to put all the blame on, do you get me?"
"Why are you saying this to me? It's you who supposed to do something, Your child is waiting for you!"
Lucy suddenly felt a familiar pain, just like the woman's child, she was also alone. She sympathized the woman and scared for the safety of her child.
"This is where I end!" The woman said gloomily. "I just want my daughter to be safe, that's all I want!"
"It's impossible—"
"Tomorrow, you must get the hell out in here!"
"How?"
Lucy asked dumbfounded, the woman was so determined to get her out.
"If we want something then we have to sacrifice something, do you want to escape in here or not?"
"At least let me think about it!"
"Miss Mendoza!"
Lucy jerked when she heard someone called her. She stood up and slowly moves forward, It was already past eight in the evening, she wonders what this people want with her.
"Your attorney just come—"
"But I did not ask any!" she blurted out, the police that open the cell ignored her.
"You should be grateful someone comes to help you!" the police officer sigh. "Since you did not recommend any, the court provides it for you!"
"You mean he's a public attorney?" she asked curiously while following closely behind. "But I am also entitled to get an attorney for myself—"
The police officer stop and look into her eyes, At that moment she saw a glimpse of sympathy in his eyes it was like telling her not to trust anyone.
"Off you go Ms. Mendoza!"
He leads her the way, Lucy suddenly grab his arms.
"I just want to talk to Detective Santillan, he probably knew something perhaps he learns I'm not—"
"You are still innocent unless proven guilty. Don't worry I'll send a message to him, he'll probably be back tomorrow!"
"Thank you!"
She open the door and step inside the isolated room with a heavy heart, she wanted to scream but it seems like she lost her voice. There she saw a man in his late thirties, with a strong, intelligent face and sympathetic eyes.
Lucy doubted him immediately, she can read peoples mind through their eyes. And the man sat opposite to her is the one she could not trust.
Empathy! It's an ability to understand the feelings of other.
"Well! You've created quite a sensation for a woman who's been accused of One count of homicide and one count of murder in twenty-four hours" he casually said while removing his coat and lessen up his tie. "But you're lucky I'm here to help you."
"One count of homicide and one count of murder you said?" she asked sardonically. "But there was no evidence that can prove it—"
"You are so naive Ms. Mendoza!" The man laughed discreetly. "By the way I'm Charles Sebastian your attorney, do you mind if I smoke?"
She disgusts someone who smoke but its not a time for her to argue with this egg head.
"No!"
He lit his cigarettes and studied her, while Lucy swear he could have a tb for being a smoker.
"You don't look like a criminal, Ms. Mendoza!"
"I told you, I did not kill my best friend. Those are all circumstantial evidence, I woke up with the knife in my hands but I swear to you—"
"I've heard you had a terrible drinking habit?"
Lucy suddenly fell silent, from here onward she had to be careful with her words.
"You were innocent yet so you'd better help yourself and watch your mouth!"
She suddenly heard the echoed of Detective Santillan's voice, yelling at her while giving her a warning.
"I did not kill her!"
"Convince me!" he said. "Tell me what exactly happened, from the beginning."
Lucy told him everything that she remembered. Atty. Sebastian sat quietly listening to her story, he did not speak until Lucy had finished. Then he leaned his back exhausted against his chair with a grim expression on his face.
"Those bastards are determined to lock you up!" he said angrily.
Lucy knew that his anger was just a pretence, though he did not lose any eye contact to her but his eye balls are restless, A person who lied while pretending to tell the truth.
"He probably forgets I'm a psychoanalyst!" she thought.
If this man in front of her wants to play a dangerous mind game then she is more willing to oblige.
"I don't understand what they were talking about!" There was a confusion in her eyes. "I don't understand anything!"
"It's very simple. Someone had to used you as a patsy!"
Lucy was surprised that he would actually state the fact that she was just a scapegoat. No! I still could not let my guard down we are still playing! She thought.
"But I still don't get it?"
"Let me explained it to you. Ms. Myer is daughter of a known business man, while Ms. Barrios was an actress. Among the two of them who were the most influential? I bet you guess it right. Someone up there has to used you for what? Mr. Myer post a fine ransom to anyone who could put her daughter's murderer behind the bar. Everyone is working up their ass to wrap up this case. You happened to step in the line!"
"But I never killed anyone!" Lucy silently clenched her fist.
"It was your words against them!"
Indeed! She thought bitterly and this man was sent not to defend her but to make sure she would rot in hell.
"When they caught you red-handed it was over!"
It's not over yet! Her mind scream with her innocence.
"Do you believed my story?"
He smiled. "I believe in you, that's why I'm here!"
"Can you help me?"
"I'm going to try, I'd give anything to clear your name." he said slowly. "If you go to trial, Mr. Myer is an influential man, he had so many connections and most of the judges was on his pay slip. They'll bury you so deep you'll never see the sun again!"
"If I go to trial?" Lucy pretended to be puzzled.
Atty. Sebastian stood slowly and casually slid both of his hands into his pocket and sigh desperately. Up to now he still had no idea that Lucy was already aware of his intention.
"I don't want to put you in trial, believe me, it will be Mr. Myer's jury. There's only one judge he has never been able to buy." he paused. "His name is Henry Torres. I already told him about your case, I spoke to him privately, and made a good deal for you!"
She knew what he meant, it was a bargain.
