Family Lineage

Carlo was from a family of politicians, from his great grandfather to his father they are well known public servants in the city. He was raised and born in Opon City where his fond memories still linger. Much has changed since he left for military service three years ago, but it still looks like home.

When he arrived, his father met him with that same face of disapproval. He never liked Carlo joining and serving in the military and he wishes me to follow his stead as a politician. A job and a career which Carlo despised the most.

Whatever Carlo's reasons are, he believe it is justified. He is of ripe age, his father has no right to dictate him of his decisions, and he believed he is capable of himself. Carlo's father however only wants someone who will follow his footsteps. He never cared for what Carlo wanted, only for his family's lineage to continue in the city's politics.

"You should have known by now. This is where you belong, to be an part of the Montenegro's political clan. I can show you the ropes if you want my son. Only if you will end your dealings with the military and your stubbornness. You have a great future as a politician!" Carlo's father again persuaded him.

Carlo shook his head and looked down, "Father, you must have known already. No matter how many times you repeat it. I do not want to be in politics nor do what you do. The military is my liking!"

Carlo insisted on his views which remained unchanged since he left.

Carlo and his father had a heated argument in his father's room that night. He wanted Carlo to serve in the City as one of his assistants and not to renew his military service. Carlo refused however, he cannot fathom the idea for he got used to the military.

"If that is so, I will give you at least a week to decide!" Carlo's father ended their argument and Carlo left his room.

Carlo once wanted to become a politician when he was a child, to follow his father's footsteps, and become someone whom the people no, the city proud of. He always wanted to do good for the people around him, and thought that public service was only the way he can serve the people.

As time passes by as Carlo grows as an adult. His views have changed, politics is one of the dirtiest jobs he realized. He cannot fathom the idea of joining such or call himself a public servant with a stain in his dignity.

The next day, Carlo woke up and went downstairs. His father could not be seen in the house and his mother explained to him that he went for an early meeting in the City Hall. Carlo joined his mother and his siblings in the table.

The aroma of food that is prepared by their housekeepers and cooks, invigorates and enticed Carlo to eat. They were already eating breakfast ahead of him so he went to the vacant seat near to my sister and sat there.

"How is your service with the military? It's been a long time since we heard of you." Carlo's mother suddenly asked him.

"I am doing good, although I am promoted recently after that recent encounter." Carlo replied.

"You don't look so well. Are you eating well?" His mother continued to ask.

"I am fine mom, no worries!" Carlo assured her of his condition.

Their conversation in the table ended moments later and left the dining room with his mother and my siblings. Carlo went to the study room to look for the books that I once read during my early years. Some of them were still there while the other one, a book that has a black cover was nowhere to be seen.

"Where could it be?" Carlo looked for it but it cannot be found anywhere.

For moments Carlo scanned through the bookshelf but could not find the book. He gave up looking after minutes of looking and sat into the chair near the window. There's a lot of things that civilian life can offer to him, he said in deep thought. However, he believe it is not time to retire from the military yet. He looks outside and opened the window.

As the wind enters the room, Carlo contemplate of my father's words earlier. He joined the military because he wanted to rebel against his father's strictness and his meddling of his decisions. It is not like he really never wanted to become a public servant in the first place. He does not want that someone is making decisions for him.

"Shall I reconsider my decision?" Carlo is again in deep thought.

Carlo looked at the table where he was and saw the book he was looking for under its desk. Someone may have took it and read it recently. He noticed there are signs of folding in the pages and then he saw something that caught his attention.

A small greeting card from a friend was hidden in one of the pages of the book. A smile etched in Carlo's face as teardrop suddenly fell. He realized what he should do from now on. He will tell his father that he had decided what to do with his life from now on.

A week has passed since the given time by Carlo's father to decide on his life's path. He approached his father to tell him what he decided to do. Carlo only need to ask him of his blessings. They had a small talk with his father and his family regarding the matter. They were gathered at the living room. It is only Carlo, his mother and father who were talking.

When it is Carlo's turn to talk he bent on his knees then bowed down to his father to show the sincerity of his decision.

"Father, I want to return to the military!" Carlo said sincerely to him.
