The Lonely King

A/N : Hey, everyone I would like to clarify something about the story,

This story is a DxD fanfiction and not a Fate one. The story is not a crossover with Fate but has elements of Fate within. If you find something that could contradict each other, DxD canon takes priority unless stated otherwise.

Since DxD's history is rather vague I will be putting elements of Fate to fill the gaps every so often but otherwise everything is my own doing. Remember not too think to much of Fate or DxD during reading, as this is my own story instead.

Thanks for the support,

Artoria 3rd Person POV

"Becoming a king means no longer being human"

Those words have been ringing in her head ever since she pulled Caliburn from the stone.

——

/ Flashback /

As Artoria stared at the handle of Caliburn ready to soon draw it from the stone just as she had before, she did something she has never done before in her life,

She hesitated.

Artoria looked at Arios with a complicated expression,

'I won't ever be able to act the same..'

During the past few weeks with Arios she has finally been able to make a real friend. Most of her time under her foster father, Sir Ector, she had only done mainly one thing, training.

During her time with Sir Ector she was instructed to withhold her true gender, she was never able to be herself.

Even her foster brother, Sir Kay, was none the wiser to her circumstances. Yeah, they could get along, but there was always that.....barrier.

Ever since she was a child Merlin would stop by, during one of those visits he told her of her lineage, the last blood relation of the fallen king.

She was royalty.

Everyday since then she had been preparing herself, training 'til her palms turned callus.

She had a destiny, a duty. She was burdened by a purpose she must fulfil, and she accepted that.

Nothing changed, she continued to act the same. She already knew what she must do, she had been prepared ever since she was told to be a boy.

The day came when she accidentally pulled that sword from the stone, not knowing it's true purpose, the true symbolic weight the sword held.

It represented hope.

Hope for the people of Britton, as soon life wouldn't be the same. It has already degraded by a rapid pace, but soon it was going to get much worse.

No one believed she pulled the stone, Merlin appeared and told her not to reveal her lineage yet. He wanted to get all the nobles at once.

He said that the only way they would believe it is if they saw it with their own eyes. So he told her to put the sword back in the stone. When those that doubted it saw that, something lit a spark in the from within, hope.

Merlin told all them that they would have a redraw, and to get all the nobles to commune at this location in two weeks.

The people nearby were quick in their response, the flames of passion in their hearts was lit.

Merlin told her to stay at his home for the next two weeks, so she did.

She was ready for this, as she had always been.

Soon Merlin returned, and along with him came a boy around her age, Arios Brennus, an orphaned boy who was picked up by The Enchantress.

Merlin told her he could be trusted.

Trusted?

She had never been able to fully trust anyone near her age, a friend, she never had one.

She had always had to change some part of herself for others.

She couldn't take the risk, it could be detrimental for her inheritance.

Now she could.

They got along fine, she enjoyed his company, the wacky antics and fun responses.

They would train together, eat together, and have fun together, but soon it ended.

She stood there staring at Arios. She was conflicted, she enjoyed their time together, she didn't want it to end.

Then he gave a nod towards her, a last bit of encouragement.

Though their times together wormed their way into her heart, she buried it all the same.

She buried everything that made her, her. She had to be the perfect king. She had to bare the weight of all her people.

She could no longer truly be human, everything she did must be in the interest of others.

It was for the greater good she told herself, for Britton.

She resolved herself, then walked her way up to the pedestal and gripped the handle of the sword in her hand. Then pulled,

She was no longer Artoria....

.....She was now Arthur, the King of the Brittons.
