Fei Huangjin took off his suit jacket and poured himself some whiskey as he settled in his study at home.
He had acted calm during the whole ordeal, allowing his secretary instead to take over. For someone who looked very much prim and proper, it surprised him to know that she carried a knife in her purse and handled a gun like a professional.
The moment she opened the car door, his hands were itching to grab her and throw her inside the car last night, steal the gun from her, and shoot the assassin at the head. He was, after all, from a line of military men. But at the same time, he was curious of what his secretary could do. And he let her be.
He toyed with the pen in his hand, letting it twirl around each finger. The thought of her stepping up to act as his girlfriend tonight, and then risking her life to save him, made him more curious about his secretary than he was with whoever was trying to kill him.
In the one year that she'd been under his employ, how did he not know that she had this side to her?
After she shot the killer at the shoulder and his motorcycle slid off, she got off the car and chased the man--in heels.
His mouth was drawn to a thin line as Fei Huangjin debated on whether to call Ying Yue or not.
His phone buzzed, notifying an incoming call. He glanced at the screen and sat up when he saw the caller ID: Secretary Ying. Looks like he didn't need to call her, after all.
He picked up the phone without hesitation. "Miss Ying."
Ying Yue was at Juyan. She went straight over after the incident and reported everything to Big Boss. The man was not happy to hear about it, and they were working on investigating the incident. They weren't sure whether the killer was after her or CEO Fei. And if he was indeed after her, then that meant someone outside Juyan knew who she was.
"Mr. Fei, I apologize for running off tonight. Have you gotten home?"
Fei Huangjin's lips hooked upward. The woman took up all the action tonight, had run off on her own, and she was worried about him getting home?
"You jumped out and disappeared after you wounded that hitman." He stated matter-of-factly.
He could hear her sigh from the other end. "Yes. I had to check on him, but he disappeared. I went home shortly after."
"I still have your knife, you know."
"Yes."
"You handle the gun well."
"Yes."
"You're not going to explain?" He probed. He knew she was evading the topic, but he couldn't get it out of his mind. A short silence followed, but Fei Huangjin wasn't going to let it go. "Well?"
"My father was in the military and taught me how to use a gun as a child. It's the only accurate thing I can remember before he passed away. The knife is for personal protection." Ying Yue rubbed her head in frustration. Fei Huangjin was refusing to drop the conversation. She immediately regretted calling to check up on him.
And frankly, she didn't mind if CEO Fei never returned that damn knife. She had better ones in her apartment, anyway.
The excuse sounded genuine enough. But to Fei Huangjin, there was still something unusual that he couldn't quite put his finger on. "Hmm."
Reminded that he had the knife in his pocket, he took it out and examined it closely.
"Anything else, Mr. Fei?"
"Were you injured?"
Ying Yue paused. Other than her feet growing blisters from all that running in 4-inch stilettos, she was perfectly fine. "No, Mr. Fei."
"Good. Rest well." Fei Huangjin ended the call and flipped Ying Yue's knife open. It looked familiar, like he'd seen it somewhere before. He frowned, trying to recall where he'd seen this model. Turning the knife over, he found a code number that was inconspicuously engraved on the dull side of the blade.
He frowned. There were only a few suppliers who engraved code numbers at this particular part of the knife. And one of them was Dragon Club, the underworld empire that his father ran and what was now his responsibility.
He picked up his phone and called Guan Ting, his right hand man in the underworld.
The voice on the other end cleared his throat and seemed surprised to receive his call. "Boss?"
"Someone tried to kill me today. Find out who it is and why."
"Got it." The man stilled. Someone tried to kill the underworld king and he didn't know about it? Guan Ting could be heard moving around yelling orders to some of their men. "Anything else, boss?"
Fei Huangjin flipped the knife open and slid it close. He repeated the motion over again. "Check out when, where, and who bought this knife. The code number is…"
When he ended the call, it wasn't long until he picked up his phone again and dialed another number.
