Silence stretched between them as doubt lingered in Big Boss' head. Admittedly, he didn't know Ying Shen very well, but he knew enough to know he wanted out of the kind of life he lived. If Fei Yangcheng was speaking the truth, there probably wouldn't be any harm done if the man sees Ying Yue from afar.
The two stared at each other for some time before he finally replied. "She's practicing in the shooting range right now. You can stay in the viewing room and nothing closer."
Fei Yangcheng nodded, standing up to his full height, looking imposing and ready to go. He left his bodyguards to wait for him and followed Big Boss through the Juyan headquarters.
The muted sounds of gunshots could be heard as they drew near the shooting range; but instead of going through the main doors, they passed through a narrow staircase to the next floor, where a viewing room was situated.
Big Boss tapped a finger on the glass and eyed Fei Yangcheng carefully. "This is a one-way mirror. She won't be able to see you from down there."
The other man nodded and walked with silent steps closer to the glass. He slipped his hands in his pockets and glanced at the agents focused on shooting at their practice targets. There were quite a few women, but none of them was the skinny girl with colored hair that Ying Shen had once showed him a photo of. "Which one is she?" He asked.
Big Boss pursed his lips and glanced over. "She looks a bit different now than how she was when I first took her in." He jutted out his chin to point to her. "She's the girl at the 2nd cubicle from the left."
Fei Yangcheng's eyes travelled over to the girl he was referring to. She was holding a gun with both hands, focused on the moving targets before her. She had the same look as Ying Shen did when he was immersed in his job. He watched her as she took a deep breath and exhaled, then shot each target with commendable accuracy and precision until she ran out of ammo.
Gun skills seemed to run through their blood, after all.
"Does she work full time here?"
The question surprised Big Boss, and he cleared his throat as he struggled to recover. "For now, yes, she's a full-time spy. But since she's already turned twenty-one this year, we'll be handing her off to have day jobs like a normal person. It's how we conceal their identities."
The man nodded, eyes still focused on Ying Yue. "Two years from now, send her for an interview at Fei International."
"Why?"
Fei Yangcheng trained his steely eyes at Big Boss, daring him to say one more word to defy him. "Just do it. And no word about this until she discovers the truth for herself."
***
Ying Yue didn't know what to think or feel as she hung up the phone, and she stood there barefoot in the middle of the bedroom like she was numb to the world.
Her fingers became limp, and her phone dropped to the carpeted floor with a soft thump.
She'd always prided herself with knowing everything about her brother, and for being the closest human being to him. But after everything she'd found these last few days, she felt like she didn't know him enough after all. Moreover, he had hidden so much from her, even during their parting.
The additional things she had learned from Big Boss today had only confirmed two things: that the letter was read by Fei Yangcheng which meant that he most probably had the documents, and that he indeed had looked out for her as per Ying Shen's request.
When Big Boss suggested she apply for an opening as a secretary at Fei International, she didn't think much of it. But now she knew it was because of that man. Her chest tightened. Was Fei Yangcheng trying to bring her closer to Fei Huangjin so she'd eventually discover the truth? But then again, the man had long passed. If the circumstances were different, she might not even have been hired by Fei Huangjin.
Ying Yue suddenly felt confused, disappointed, and happy at the same time.
Her feet took her to the door, and her hands unlocked it as she mechanically exited the room in search of her husband.
