Already the captain

Ying Yue punched in the passcode to Big Boss' office and stepped inside. It looked the same as it always did -- the desk littered with documents, his laptop on one side, and an empty mug on the coffee table. It gave off the feeling as if Big Boss would be getting in through the door anytime now to berate her for something she did, or for being in his office without telling him.

You brat, he would say, why are you here again?

The air of nostalgia lingered and started to prick at her chest. She walked over to the desk and sat on the leather seat behind it, running a finger over the oakwood tabletop until her eyes landed on the three framed photos on it.

The first one showed a family of three: a younger version of Big Boss, a pretty short-haired woman beside him, and a little girl that looked just like him. The second photo was a solo photo of the little girl with a toothless grin that made you want to smile just looking at it.

And the third…

The third was a blurry candid photo of a teenage girl holding up a gun in the firing range. She was facing the other way, with only a part of her face seen. But even with just that sliver of her face seen, Ying Yue knew who it was. It was her.

She bit her lip. She didn't realize how much she mattered to Big Boss until everything was already too late. She sighed. "I'll take care of Juyan for you, Big Boss."

There was a knock on the door and Xi Shenghui got in with a blank look on his face. "Why did you call me?"

"Sit down." She gestured to the seat in front of the desk. Her eyes briefly flitted to that framed photo of her before she turned her gaze at him again. "Shenghui, I'm not gonna beat around the bush. I want you to be the Assistant Director of Juyan. I need help running this place."

His eyebrows rose up, and then he shook his head at her. "I'm already the captain of the phoenix team."

"That doesn't mean you can't do both." She pressed, "Mo Yiling's gone now. I don't have anyone else to rely on except for you."

The statement took him by surprise, making him lower his head as a faint patch of red crept up his neck and ears.

Ying Yue smirked. "Either you be my Assistant Director, or I fire you from Juyan. So how about it?"

Xi Shenghui's mouth opened and closed, and then there was a ticking in his jaw. He always found refusing this woman a bit difficult, and now look where that got him.

"I'll take your silence as one of agreement." Ying Yue winked.

Fei Huangjin stormed out of the meeting room, followed closely by his new secretary, Shen Chuyi. He'd been in a bad mood all day.

For some reason, he found everyone in the office incompetent today.

He took a glance at his watch and realized that it was already half past five. Ying Yue was probably done with her work now, so he should pick up his wife soon. Instead of heading to his office, he made a beeline to his personal elevator.

Shen Chuyi looked confused. Where was his boss going?

Only when the elevator door slid close between them did Shen Chuyi realize that the CEO had abandoned him. The young man's hands trembled and his face contorted into one of panic.

Oh no! There were still documents that needed his signature and the representative of another company was in the waiting room outside Fei Huangjin's office to discuss their partnership. What in the world could he do now?

He was going to get fired. He was sure of it.
