Jason started to mentally berate himself for the slip-up and started furiously thinking for a way out of this mess ' aghh! I need to think something real quick. I don't want to tell him the truth but I don't how else to explain it. How am I even supposed to lie about a wand to 100 plus-year-old wandmaker who is famous across Europe for his wands' he though.
'you know what, to hell with it!' he decided to take a risk and tell him his assumption.
'At worst case scenario I came in the radar of a dark lord dumbledore, best case scenario I get know more about my magic' he thought determined.
"I am not exactly sure how I know but I can somehow just feel it" he began. Ollivander was starting to get more interested in the story as he heard it.
"I am an orphan and since accidental magic seems very unnatural to the muggles, it led to some bullying some year back. When I realized that accidental magic happened only during emotional outbursts, I started meditating to gain some control over them" he told him, he took a deep breath trying calm his pounding heart and continued: " It didn't really help with my emotional outburst but over time I somehow got a certain hold over my magic and could stop it from acting out in front of others, now that I have some understanding of my magic I can feel that the wand is not fully compatible with me".
As he was finishing his story Jason started studying Ollivander's very carefully. At the end of it, the old man was smiling ear to ear.
"Marvelous, I don't think you know how extraordinary achievement is," he said, "I have been working at this store for many years Mr. Williams and I do occasionally meet children your who can feel their magic, very rarely do I meet someone with any control over it. You are the first person of your age that I have seen having enough understanding about your magic to check your wand compatibility. Usually, people reach this stage after they come of age or reach their magical maturity", he told him cheerfully.
Jason just knew this was going to attract a lot of attention towards him and that was the last thing he wanted. As dread started rising inside and he started imagining worst-case scenarios, Ollivander started talking again.
"Now don't get much worked up over this fact, although this is an extremely rare ability, it does not give you any advantages over your pears since this gives no help in learning wanded magic" he said.
"And although it is a rare gift in Europe, it's not the case in other magical communities, especially the ones that don't use wands very much, as understanding one's magic is the first step of learning wandless magic and there, It is encouraged to learn this skill", he explained.
Jason claimed down after hearing, ' it's good that it's not much of a valuable skill as it is a rare one. As amazing as wandless magic seems like it's not really as efficient. Wanded magic is more efficient, versatile, and in general the more powerful brand of magic. At max this will make people take note about me but they won't look much into it, I am still too unimportant to the powerhouses of this world', he thought.
'Though I did speculate that I might be able to learn wandless magic but I was only able to stop my magic from acting out. And since what I was doing was very similar to how one becomes an obscures, I didn't try to experiment much with my magic without first getting some information on how it works. The thought of becoming an obscurus scared me a lot but I quickly realized that I wasn't exactly rejecting or suppressing my magic but rather controlling and understanding it.' He thought.
Stopping his mind from wandering much, Jason tried to take the conversation back on topic.
"So then what does it mean for my wand?" he asked the wandmaker.
"Well you could always keep using this wand, but I won't recommend it. Although the wand will work beautifully for you, there will always be an itch in your mind that you could do a bit better with a fully compatible wand and that will only diminish your ability with this one. I would recommend using a custom wand, it will have better compatibility than this one. It won't be fully compatible as that's next to impossible but it will be the next best thing.' Ollivander explained.
"How much is this one and how much will a custom one cost?" Jason asked.
"Any standard Ollivanders wand costs 7 galleons, a custom one will cost you a total of 12 galleons unless you need more rare materials", he replied.
"I am shopping with the orphan's scholarship", said Jason, unsure if it will cover a custom wand.
" I can bill you through it for 12 galleons but then I will have to explain why you need a custom wand in the first place," he said, as if sensing Jason's worry he continued by saying " or I bill you the standard 7 galleons and you can pay me the rest on your own".
Jason took his time to contemplate his choices, 'buying the custom one is a given, I don't want to hinder myself in learning magic anyway. But how should I pay for the wand, even with my inheritance I don't really have that many funds so the first option is desirable, but I don't really have a choice, do I? I have to take the second option, I can't really let everyone know of my ability. That is not to say Mr. Ollivander will not tell anyone otherwise, but it will only be a few people and even they will be the people that he trusts. I am not even sure if he is close to dumbledore, although many readers of the story speculated as such, there are no ways to know really know' he thought.
" I will take the second option", he told the man.
"Very good, now lets began the process of creating your personal wand", he said happily and went to the back of the store and came with a box containing 30 or so vials.
"Push your magic through the wand, close your eyes and try to feel which vials your magic is attracted to", he said pointing toward the box.
Jason did as instructed and felt his magic being attracted towards two different directions, after open his eyes, the vials that he felt his magic attracted to contained some powdered stuff in it, one of gray and the other of white color. As Jason pointed them out to the wandmaker, he quickly wrote something down on a piece of parchment.
"What are those?", Jason asked indicating toward the vials.
"These are ashes of Phoenix after it's burning day and willingly given unicorn horn dust respectively ", Ollivander replied.
"So how will you choose the wood and the core?" Jason asked.
"Since that wand chose you, we can safely assume that you are compatible with walnut for wood and dragon heartstring for the core." The old man replied.
"Now it will take me one week to make your wand, you can keep this wand for the time being and then return it to me while collecting your custom one", he said while indicating the black wand still in Jason's hand.
Jason quickly paid the extra 5 galleons and kept the wand inside its box, he wasn't interested in even touching the wand lest he scratch it and forced be forced to pay for that too.
' I definitely remember something about wand ownership and how one cannot use another wizards wand. This wand definitely chose me, then how is he going to match it with someone else' he wondered, then shrugged thinking ' whatever, it's not exactly my problem, he probably has a way else he wouldn't let hold onto this wand'.
As Jason came out of the shop, he started looking for professor McGonagall. He quickly found her coming towards him with his trunk in tow.
Jason quickly ran to her and informed her of his purchase, of course, he didn't tell her about him needing a custom wand. Since it was already noon, the professor decided to treat him to lunch. They quickly went to a nearby café and ordered some lunch.
" So Mr. Williams, you said that you've read a few books, how did you get money to buy them?" asked McGonagall.
"Well, you remember me telling you about my father's friend?" he asked, after getting her nod he continued " he was also my parent's lawyer in the muggle world, after their death, he took the job of taking care of their assets in the muggle world. Though he has very little access to the money, he can withdraw enough to give me pocket money which I saved to buy the books I needed" he explained.
Soon they started to have a small chat with Jason mostly asking her suggestions about the course and what reference books she would recommend. Soon after the lunch was over, professor McGonagall safely dropped at the orphanage. After giving him his ticket for the Hogwarts express and then instructing him how to access the platform, she went on her way.
After carefully placing the trunk in his bedroom, Jason sat on the bed and started meditating and recalling everything that happened that day, because it was an eventful day.
