"Come Taka. I'll explain further" Zahara led him into her den, where she was sure no one would see them.
As she walked with him, she stole glances at his face. Those eyes that were filled with passion became so sad. The fire was extinguished and she could sense his disappointment. The same feeling he had before he left.
"A lion witnessed the murder that night."
"Right. I think it was Keoni. I saw her staring before I ran away"
"Keoni said that when she watched it happen, Mtukufu and King Adahari were having a conversation, when you tackled Mtukufu and pushed your Father off the cliff."
"What?"
Taka knew even if he did kill his father, he was trying to protect him. Is that what she saw?
"Zahara that's not true. You have to believe me"
"I know it's not true Taka. I know you'd never kill your father. Just tell me what really happened"
"I did kill him Zahara. It's my fault he's gone." Taka replied as he became overwhelmed with sadness.
"Taka I-"
Taka cut her off before she could finish.
"Father and Mtukufu were fighting. They were shoving and kicking and hitting each other. I saw that Tuk was about to push father off the cliff when I started running towards them. I tackled Tuk to get him off of Father. Before I knew it, Father roared as he fell off the cliff."
The love of his life knew the truth. All he ever wanted was to marry the beautiful lion in front of him and raise children with her. He wanted to patrol the Pride Lands with his sons and daughters. Life just made sense when he was with her. She probably hated him now.
"Taka it was an accident. You only wanted to save him."
"He's gone Zahara."
"What if you stood there and did nothing and your brother had killed him instead. You would've blamed yourself for not doing anything."
Zahara understood Taka completely. It was only a heroic action gone wrong. The way she saw it, Mtukufu would have killed their Father any way.
"Taka, your brother has turned the whole Kingdom against you"
"How?"
"Mtukufu reinforced Keone's statement and gave even more details. His said you always wanted your Father dead and you were planning to take the throne from him"
"He's wrong, I loved Father, I've never even wanted to be a part of the royal family." Taka replied in exasperation. Who was the root of all these lies?
"He told everyone that you ran because you knew you'd be thrown in jail if you were caught. Now, no one is allowed to say your name. If everyone is to talk about you, they're supposed to address you as Usaliti"
Usaliti means treachery and betrayal in Swahili.
"I know you've always wanted to be normal. I beleive you Taka. Mtukufu spread all these lies because he's hungry for the throne."
"What do I do now? Maybe I should've never comeback"
"You can't leave Taka"
"I have no choice. If I stay, I'll be thrown in jail or exiled"
"I've been waiting for you to comeback so we can be together. You can't leave"
Hearing this broke Taka's heart. She was waiting for him. They always talked about how without each other, life would be pointless. He can't leave her now.
"Let's get married" These words escaped his mouth without any thought, but he meant every word.
"What?"
"I want to marry you. I love you Zahara."
"I love you Taka and you have no idea I've been waiting for this moment, but if your brother finds out, we're both dead."
"Don't worry, I have an idea"
