Headed Anywhere

Sam dropped me off at the hospital just before noon. He was coming back about 3:00 to sit with me. The last twenty fours was a whirlwind. I honestly didn't know what to think. There was so much to figure out.

The meeting didn't go good or bad. It was just overwhelming. They were moving my grandfather to a different part of the hospital at the end of the week. It was more of a nursing home set up, where he could begin some rehab. He still hadn't woke up yet. No one was sure if he would. There was no real answers. Just the fact that the longer he didn't wake up, the worse it would be.

" Janie, we need to talk about what we are going to do. I will take care of all the bills for the house so you don't need to worry about that. You need to finish school." Uncle Jimmy said.

" I know I do. But how can I go back with him here? I could change schools to be closer. But I don't know about where I would stay. If I could stay on campus. I have some money saved. I could get an apartment."

" Is that what you want to do?"

"Maybe. I will have to do some checking around."

" Ok. I have two days before I leave. If your going to stay here, we need to find you a better place to stay. I am headed back to the house to get some important documents. I will also close up the house. Do you need me to bring anything from the house?"

" No. I will look around tonight for a better place to stay. Do you want me to use the credit card? I need to go home and get more things. Sam leaves with you and I want to spend time with him before he ships out too. "

" Who is Sam?"

" He is a friend. His ship is the America. So he leaves with you. He is a very kind man, Uncle Jimmy. I think tomorrow I will ask him to go home with me to get stuff. That way I will be set before both of you leave. "

" A friend. Well, I look forward to meeting him. I can't believe how grown up you are, Janie. You remind me so much of your mother. I know your parents would be proud of you. I don't want you to stay long today or tomorrow. When I leave, I know you will stay every minute here. So take a break for a few days. They can reach us both. I am going to head to get what I need tonight. Find a place and we will go pay for a month tomorrow. "

" Sam will be back at 3:00. I will stay for a little bit. We won't stay long. I love you, Uncle."

" I love you, too. I will call you at the room tonight at 8:00."

With that, Uncle Jimmy walked out of the room. I still had an hour before Sam came. My mind on super overload. I can't believe we made love last night. It was amazing and I don't regret it at all. But I am confused about how I feel. He is amazing. But what is this? A fling? Start of a relationship? Sam doesn't strike me as that type. I looked at my grandfather laying in bed. He has lost so much weight. He was pale and bandages on his head. How could I be so happy about Sam when he lays here, day after day and not knowing if he will wake up. I need him to wake so bad. I need to tell him so many things.

In the hour that I waited for Sam, I found a college thirty minutes away from here, They will let me transfer. But there was no housing available. I was going to have to live off campus. I set an appointment with the counselor for next week to get registered for classes and financial aid. So now its time to find a place and try and get it. Things were starting to fall in place.

I must have dozed off. I awoke to Sam sitting in the chair beside me, rubbing my back.

"Hello sweetie."

" Hi, Sam. Have you been here long?"

" Just a few minutes. How did the meeting go?"

" It went as expected. I have a lot to process. My uncle went back to the house to get paperwork. It looks like grandfather will be here awhile. So I need to find a place to stay, go home and get some things I will need now and in the fall when school starts. I transferred schools today. So that's done. I promised Uncle I would take a few days away from here. He is going to spend the time here after he gets back. Could you help me try and find a place? Since you know the area around here. Sorry to keep bothering you."

As Sam leaned in to kiss me, he said " You aren't bothering me. So stop and yeah I will help you."

"Thank you. Hey, grandpa. This is Sam. He wants to say hello before we go. I'm going to get some stuff done over the next couple of days. So we will head out now. I love you."

" Hello, Mr. Rivers. I'm Sam and you have a wonderful granddaughter. It's nice to meet you, just wish it was different. Janie, did you eat?"

" No. I didn't think about it. "

" Let's feed you and then look for you a place."

I bent down and kissed my grandfather on the forehead. I missed him so much.

" Okay, let's go. "

Sam took my hand as he helped me up out of the chair. Together holding hands we headed to his car.
