Crynn POV
We all looked at each other as the unspeakable opened the door he came out from and held it up. "Come on," he called out urgently. "I walked first into the corridor after the door and then Aria and Scamander followed after. Creak, the door closed and the unspeakable cleared his mouth and shuffled his pockets for a piece of neatly folded paper.
"Right, read this first," he unfolded the paper and held it up for everyone to see. I squinted my eyes to carefully read the words written on the paper. The Department of Mysteries Operatives Offices is located in Level 11th through an elevator accessible through the nearest door to the right. "Fidelius charm?" I asked because a paper and instructions, suspiciously fidelius.
"Yes, Fidelius Charm, makes everything easier," the unspeakable pointed behind us and the corridor shrunk and replacing it, came an elevator. "Biggest mistake of my life," Scamander whispered very silently next to me, I don't think the unspeakable heard it at all. We entered the elevator and the unspeakable pressed the down button.
The elevator doors closed as I felt the elevator descend quickly. Ding! Wow, less than 5 seconds, the pressure did feel a bit more than the previous elevator. "Welcome to Level 11th, The Department of Mysteries Operatives Offices," the elevator opened up a short corridor and a door. The unspeakable led us into a big, grand, lavish, rich, luxurious, and too much other adjectives to describe the room.
It's a wide and tall rotunda with a perfectly semi-circular dome. The walls were marble white and the dome was painted so beautifully in a renaissance art style but instead of the heaven or Jesus and His Angels, it was wizards. Wizards of old holding staffes of all kinds of ethnics. Some looks Asian holding monk shakujo staffs and Westerners holding simple wooden staffs.
The other half held modern wands of all different colors and shapes. In the most middle of the dome is a giant depiction of magic itself and the universe rotating around it, the stars shining and the clouds simmering. "Absolutely incredible," Scamander beat me to it, damn if I'm not speechless at this.
"Ehm... Sorry but we don't usually get guests and so we don't have waiting seats anywhere. You can look around while I get someone," the unspeakable scratched his head and exited through tall double doors. So, he left us alone and wow this room truly is magnificent. The rotunda walls is fully decorated and furnished with intricate carvings and countless painting and pictures, small and big, colorful and colorless.
He did say to look around, so why not look around! "Is that?! Qin's Four Auspicious Beasts?!" Newt Scamander suddenly exclaimed in shock, his eyes turning to hearts as he hastely ran up to an ancient Chinese painting on the wall. It shows a scene where numerous people, all looking well-off, looking in reverence towards the sky.
A mighty wingless serpentine blue dragon flying in the East, a gorgeous flaming red bird in the South, an overbearing white tiger in the West and a fierce black tortoise in the North. China's Four Guardian Beasts, Azure Dragon, Vermillion Bird, White Tiger, and Black Tortoise! No wonder Scamander is literally glued to the painting, he's after all a magizoologist.
"Whoo, this looks cool," Aria mouthed a wow as I followed her to see what she's seeing. It's a moving painting, depicting a handsome adolescent man successfully pulling out a shining sword trapped inside a stone as everyone around the young man gasped in amazement and a middle aged man holding a long staff looking at the action, nodding in acceptance.
"Is this King Arthur pulling out Excalibur!" Aria's eyes shined as she took in more of the painting. Oh look there's a description! "The prophet, Roddan the Black first predicted the arrival of 'The One, True King' in the 6th century, about a young man, pulling a sword from a stone, uniting all of Britain under one rule."
"Many thought his predictions wrong as no true king has ever ascended the throne until the date of September the 16th,1072. It was a faithful Monday when then called Arthur Pendragon, pulled Excalibur out of the stone and became 'The One, True King' under the eyes of many and Merlin's watchful gaze."
"That's quite the description," Aria gave her opinion and moved on from that painting, trying to find a striking one, Newt Scamander still couldn't leave the ancient Chinese painting. "This one is certainly familiar," Aria spoke as I stood behind her to take a look at the next painting. "That's because it's in the bible," I said.
It's the legendary dividing of the Red Sea. Moses with his white beard stretched his empty right hand out and his left hand, holding a staff out as well. And then, the huge sea split as the freed slaves all watched and praised the power of God. It has a much simpler description only, 'Moses Splitting the Red Sea' is written on a plate.
"Ooh, I know this one," I muttered and came across yet another moving painting! A wise looking old man wearing an ancient Greek chiton is standing in the middle of a white temple and around his back, floated multiple geometric shapes but the most conspicuous shape must be the three dimensional triangle the man's holding.
"Pythagoras of Samos. Discovered the famously used both muggle and magical arithmetic method of the Pythagoras Theorem. Also the first wizard to prove that the characteristics of any magic, dark or light, are based upon intent as such that no wizard or witch having no purpose of harming will not harm with dark magic as do anyone with the intent of harming, won't harm with light magic."
That's done as well. Oh! Now this photo, I know this photo from somewhere! "Aria, come and see if you can recognize this photo," I pulled Aria to look at it. It's not a painting but a slightly brown colored black and white modern photograph. There's seven men or maybe even women standing side by side, some wearing suits, others wearing cowboy hats, carrying rifles, shotguns, pistols, all looking joyful.
But what really attracts me is a man hung upside down connected to a horizontal pole, like he's dead because I could see some bullet holes on his body. "Oh yeah, it feels like I've seen this before? Just don't know where," Aria whispered before closing her eyes into the photo trying to remember. "There's a description here."
"A muggle photograph taken from the memories of a seer. It depicted the death of one Jo-" I was about to read the next lines when the large double doors behind us banged open. "Sorry for putting you all into a wait!" A different unspeakable came out, wearing a golden mask and having a plumper body.
"Where are my manners, once again, I welcome everyone to Level 11th, Department of Mysteries Operatives Offices," and the unspeakable chuckled. Looks like I won't get to finish the description but well maybe some other time.
(A.N : That last photo was an Easter egg I put for fun, it's from a popular (I guess it's popular) TV show. See if anyone could guess from which TV show it came from and who the hung man and seven characters around him are.)
