Chapter 5: James

James looked at me with confusion and then understanding, "you don't want to shift because you don't trust me yet". He crouched down so we were closer to eye level. I finally saw his eyes and they were magnificent. They were a very light blue that reminded me of a husky I once saw. I did not see any malice in his eyes just what I think was a hint of sadness. I wanted to reach out and touch his face. I wanted to tell him it was all okay, to ask him why he was sad.

I composed myself internally and just stared at him. I hadn't changed to human in a very long time. I wasn't even sure if I knew how anymore. It was safer for me to stay a wolf. Wolves may be beasts, but they run on instinct not on pure evil like most humans.

He smiled at me a little and said, "I have a bowl in my bag. I thought you might want to stay in wolf form". He pulled his back pack down and started rummaging through it. I started to back away. He could have anything in there, maybe even a gun. He pulled the bowl out and looked in my eyes again. When he saw I had moved back I saw that sadness peak through again. Did I make him sad? He did not even know me.

"I can pour the water in here. Can I get closer?", he watched my every move. I nodded slightly and he slowly advanced towards me. I wavered ever so slightly when he crouched down again to lift the water bottle and pour it into the bowl. He opened the other bowl that held the food and placed it back down. James backed away and sat down on the grass.

I didn't even feel the pain as I went for the water and food. I felt like I would die if I didn't eat and drink right this moment. I scarfed down the sandwiches and gulped the water. Once it was all gone I looked to James again. He was smiling and let out a chuckle.

"Come back with me wolf. You can have all the food and water you want". His eyes locked on mine and I felt that pull again. His dominance was powerful and alluring. I huffed and laid down to lick my paws. I wasn't going anywhere with him... yet.
