Chapter 14: Meeting
After taking a few detours along the way, Sam and the boy finally made it at their destination. It was a cave which had been renovated to accommodate a person.
''Nice place you've got here.'' Sam complemented with a whistle.
''Yeah, figured I might as well settle down since the number of beasts in this area is a lot.'' The youth replied, he started removing his burnt rags.
His lean muscles were revealed, his once skinny frame was now filled with compact muscles and a perfect six pack. These new features further enhanced his handsomeness. A huge scar also ran across his back causing Sam to hiss as he imagined how he got it.
''So where've you been?'' The boy asked, trying to erase the awkward silence that had engulfed the room.
''I actually just woke up a few hours ago. Been searching for you since then.'' Sam shrugged, normally someone would starve to death if the didn't eat for a long time but from what the youth could tell, the old man was still perfectly fine.
''Aren't you hungry? I have some ramen.'' The boy, who was now dressed in a new jounin uniform took out a scroll and took out two pipping hot ramen bowls. Sam accepted the offer.
The room descended into silence once again, Sam felt awkward and was at a loss at how to explain himself.
''What happened that day?'' The boy asked Sam, Sam flinched, and the atmosphere became chilly.
'' I have a condition, after being poisoned. The poison would slowly spread and infect my Qi while turning me into a mindless monster. The episodes of insanity are random but increase in intensity and duration as time goes.'' Sam explained. The youth sensed no lies within his words so he decided to trust his words, he also believed that the loving old man wouldn't intentionally try to kill him.
''Can this poison be cured?'' The boy asked in worry, he couldn't bare to see the old man suffer for the rest of his days.
''Haa...…. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this, I went to the best alchemists and medicine masters but they all said I was destined to turn into a mindless monster.'' Sam replied, a sad tone laced his voice but there was also a hint of acceptance.
''BULLSHIT!!, there has to be a way.'' The boy exclaimed angrily, he started pacing around the room, trying to think of a way to save the old man. This touched the old man so much that he smiled kindly and stood up.
''I know it's hard to accept boy, but there's nothing to be done. Instead of worrying about the inevitable, I want to cherish my time as your teacher.'' Sam said and pulled the boy into a deep embrace.
The youth's heart was crushed, he just hugged Sam back and started crying. To him Sam was more than a teacher, he was like a father, they had only known each other for a few months but in that time Sam had went out of his way to take care of him.
''You're more than a teacher to me, how can I just sit by and watch as the closest thing to a father in this world turns insane.'' The boy replied, sobbing uncontrollably.
''Hey, I still have some time so let's make the most of it.'' Sam comforted the boy gently.
The boy didn't reply, he hugged Sam tighter for a few more minutes before letting him go.
''So what should we do first old man? Play catch?'' The boy joked trying to ease the mood.
''Call me Sam, also what is catch?'' The old man gave the boy his name, he also couldn't help but ask what the boy was talking about.
''Oh right, I always forget that I'm in another world.'' The boy chuckled to himself.
''Are you going to answer me boy?'' Sam asked, he was genuinely curious.
''Uh.. It's a kind of game back on my homeland.'' The boy replied, he also hinted that he had regained his memories.
''Oh...Wait! Did your memories come back!'' Sam shook the boy and asked excitedly.
''Y-yeah, t-two months ago if I recall.'' The boy replied while prying himself out of Sam's grasp.
''That's good to hear boy, hahahaha truly this day keeps getting better and better.'' Sam started laughing loudly, his goofy temperament coming back.
''Yeah, apparently I'm from another world.'' The boy dropped a bombshell.
''Hahahahaha...wait what do you mean another world.'' Sam almost chocked at the surprising revelation.
''Let's sit down, this is a long story.'' The boy suggested, to which Sam readily complied.
...Flashback 2 months ago
Mc's POV
I sighed as I looked at the pile of beast corpses lying below me, I was growing stronger by the day. I could now take on 3 to 5 rank 3 beasts head on and still win. My mastery over lightning release had also increased, my dexterity with the Kiba swords was also at an all-time high.
Only lacking behind was me mastery over wind and watev as opposed to my lighting that is, but since I mostly used them for support through my clones my focus was still on lightning release.
I started sealing the monsters within my scroll and left the area soon after, I flickered as quickly as possible since the sun was about to set, and nighttime was when rank 6 and above beasts liked to roam the forest.
After arriving at my cave, I started my routine and sold some collected fruit and plants, after counting my points and buying another change of clothes and supplies, I decided to go to bed early.
DING!
''Host's mental capacity has met the requirements, preparing for memory transfer.'' This was all the system said before I was struck by an unbearable pain causing me to scream out and curl into a ball.
My head felt as if someone had poured molten iron on it, I rolled around and grunted hoping to somehow ease the pain but as more memories flooded, my pain also increased exponentially.
After an hour, the pain finally subsided, I opened my eyes, everything felt clearer; the foggy feeling from before had disappeared.
I scanned my memories, apparently, I once lived on a planet known as Earth, during my childhood and teen years nothing special happened. I had supportive friends and family and ambitions to one day own a huge business.
After completing my studies I went on to chase my dreams, I met my beautiful wife who constantly motivated me to follow our passions. After 20 years of hard work, everything had paid off, I owned a large company spanning over hundreds of countries all around the world.
After my wife died, everything lost meaning having no heir to take over my empire since my wife couldn't have children. I adopted a bright young girl and placed her under my wing.
She grew up and eventually took over the business, I left the now dull world of business and I retired with peace of mind. Having nothing to do during my last years, I started immersing myself in the world of anime. Starting with the most popular anime until I eventually turned to reading novels and manga.
But I still couldn't fully accept the loss of my life so when a group approached me saying they could bring her back I funded them and slowly they made progress. They cloned her using all available genetic matrial from her preserved body that I had kept. From there they created a clone of her before using what they had anylyzed from her brain before her death. On the day of her ressuraction something happened, I don't know what, but it prevented me from bringing my lovely wife back. Although such thoughts shook my very soukd in fear now, I had no idea as to why.
After that I just kept on hunting beasts relentlessly to ease my anger and calm my nerves. In a way it helped cement my place in this world and ease my unknown fear. I collected any valuable resource I found and exchanged it for points in the system. My aim was to buy atleast one S-rank kinjutsu. That would boost my power dramatically. But the price of jutsu after A-rank shot up exponentially!
One S-rank kinjutsu went for five million points, I had 3 million saved up since typical rank 4 beasts went for as little as 200 thousand to as high as 600 thousand. It was understandable why the jutsu was expensive though, since they were rare even in the Naruto world, and prices always shot up whenever something was rare enough.
.... End of flashback
After explaining everything to the old man, he just ate his cold ramen. He was probably still processing the ridiculous story.
''So yeah, that's about all of it.'' I said, hoping to break him out of his trance.
''I've never heard of anybody like you boy. An otherworldly being is a new concept for me.'' Sam replied, after a long pause.
''Yeah, but I don't dare think I'm the only one.'' I said, I honestly don't think this was a coincidence. Maybe some god decided to use me for entertainment, if it was a year and a half ago, I would've laughed at this theory but in a world were people can do the 'impossible' then my theory holds some weight.
''So what have you been doing these past months?'' Sam changed the subject.
''Besides hunting and growing my power, nothing much. Oh! I also found a perfect name for myself.'' I replied with a shrug.
''You didn't use your former name?'' Sam asked with a raised eyebrow.
''Nah, I just thought, now that I'm in a new world with a new ambition at life, why not get a new name to go with it.'' I replied nonchalantly.
''Hmm interesting, its normally impossible to just change your name like that, maybe it different in your case.'' Sam mused, he seemed more accepting at my strange abilities that defied the laws of this world, but since I also couldn't understand how the heck a planet as big as the sun didn't have a crushing gravitational pull; some things would just be left a mystery.
''So what's your new name?'' Sam asked.
''Lethe, it means oblivion and forgetfulness back on earth.'' I stated proudly. (A\N: Check out the five rivers of the Greek underworld to understand where the name came from.)
''Interesting name choice boy, but I can also somewhat understand your intentions.'' Sam complemented? While stroking his chin.
''So what's your plan now that you're awake?'' I asked Sam, I already guessed what he was planning but I wanted to hear from him.
''Its obvious, I'm going to test you, guide you out of the forest and go back to my peaceful cottage.'' Sam stated, I really wanted to convince him otherwise, but I could tell that his decision was final.
''Test me?'' I asked while pointing at myself, he watched me beat a rank 4 beast, what more could he want.
''I know what you're thinking boy, defeating a dumb beast is easy but humans use tactics, numbers and underhanded means to win. We'll need to make sure you can also fight against humans, There's also the beastment to think about.'' Sam reasoned reasonably if there is such a word.
''What rank is your cultivation old man Sam?'' I asked, he never actually told me.
''Not much actually, I'm just at the Ascension realm.'' Sam spoke proudly, it was understandable why he would brag though.
The Ascension realm was just one stage away from the Divine realm which was the strongest known stage within this planet.
Below the Ascension realm was the Immortal realm, and below that was the Core formation realm further below that was the Qi liquification realm and below that was finally the Body tempering realm.
Besides the Body tempering realm which had nine sub-stages, the other realm had three sub-strages which were low, mid, and high.
''I find that hard to believe, after-all how could you have lost to an inexperienced brat if you were so strong.'' I provoked; I knew that he was barely even using his power at the time but meh.
''You've become quite disrespectful brat, tomorrow we shall end this once and for all.'' Sam declard, veins already bulging on his temples.
''Don't be surprised when this 'brat' kicks you wrinkly ass.'' I spoke while laughing.
''Tch, what happened to the silent and earnest brat.'' Sam said gloomily.
''What are you talking about old man, I have always been like this.'' I replied, I knew that the change in my personality was due to regaining my memories, my two personalities just merged and my this was the result, I was not as quiet as before neither was I as talkative as I was back on Earth.
''Just go to sleep.'' Sam grumbled, and he started to lay on my bed to sleep.
''Good night old man.'' I bid him farewell and went outside to train.
