Chapter 15: A talking wolf

The night passed and soon morning came. After an hour of exercise, I wore my clothes and started preparing for today's hunt.

''Hey!! Old man, I'm leaving for a while.'' I notified Sam and flickered deeper inside the forest.

Today's target was a pack of rank 3 dire wolves, the pack leader was low-rank 5 beast. Recently broken through.

Going in with brute force was out of the question since I would be greatly outnumbered. I arrived within range of my targets, after climbing a decently high tree, I began my preparations. I weaved a hand-sign and three clones popped into existence.

''Set traps in three different locations and disperse when you're done.'' I instructed; the clones flickered away to start preparing.

After waiting for half an hour, I received the memories of one of the clones, I waited for the other two and a few minutes later they also dispersed and gave me their memories.

Satisfied by my preparation, I created another five clones. I also removed the bandages on my forearms and palms, to an outsider the writings on my hands may look like tattoos but they were bracelets engraved with storage seals.

I summoned the kiba swords, after making sure everything was ready. I took out a kunai with an explosion tag and threw it towards the general location of the wolves. My clones followed my lead.

The tags exploded and riled up the wolves, they started franticly looking for the perpetrator. I didn't waste time, I flickered towards the nearest wolf, I swung my lightning clad sword, hoping to decapitate it, but the wolf's monstrous reaction speed and instinct helped it evade my attack. It let out a howl and alerted the other wolves.

The wolves all showed up within seconds after the alert, my clones started attacking at a range using kunai while I retreated. The angry pack didn't let up and followed behind me. Me and my clones started retreating and split up.

The angry wolves also split up and chased after them, I looked behind and saw three wolves were after me, I sped up and headed towards the location of the trap.

I arrived and started evading the trip wires, the angry wolves ran through the wires and activated the traps, soon explosions echoed in the forest along with whimpers of pain.

After 10 seconds of continuous explosions, I jumped into the fray and started killing the weakened and dazed wolves. It was a one-sided massacre.

After killing the last wolf, I didn't even bother to check my notification and went towards the location of the alpha wolf. My clone wouldn't be able to handle it alone. My worries were soon proven as I received the memories of my clone.

Apparently the alpha came out of the explosion with only a few burns, I arrived near the area and heard whimpers and angry growls from the injured wolves, the alpha was quite and just stood there staring at its pack. There was a certain intelligence within its eyes one that didn't belong to a rank-5 beast.

I decided to retreat, but when I turned around. I suddenly felt a chill behind me. I didn't wait, I flickered forward and evaded a strike of compressed air that was aimed to decapitate me. I didn't wait for another attack, I created two other clones, we used the clouds of smoke to confuse the wolf and dispersed in different directions.

I don't know if it was due to my terrible luck, but the wolf followed me instead of one of my clones. It started shooting bullets of air at me, I evaded them and increased my speed. The persistent wolf managed to keep up and even close the gap.

I summoned some tagged kunai and threw them at the beast, it easily dodged the daggers but they blew up and caused it to lose balance and topple over.

''HUMAN!!'' An angry roar resounded behind me, the wolf; more pissed than before. It ran through the trees as if they were nothing but twigs.

The beast's killing intent intensified, I evaded a barrage of air bullets and trees that fell towards me.

The angry beast persistently followed behind me until we arrived at my cave.

''SAM!!'' I shouted and the man's head perked out of the cave.

''Look out!!'' I shouted and ran past the old man, I knew it was shameless to pit a rank 5beast against him, but to him this shouldn't be difficult. With his realm a rank 5 beast was just fodder.

''DIE HUMAN!!'' The still pissed wolf bellowed at Sam, all it got as a reply was a simple slap from Sam. The slap created a shockwave that bent the trees.

I used my arms to cover my eyes, when I removed my arms, all I saw was a headless body lying down on the floor.

''Hahahahha, good work Sam.'' I complemented with a forced laugh.

''Shameless little shit! Why do you have to involve me in you're battle huh!'' He yelled, veins were pooping all over his temples.

''Your humble disciple was going to die; you have to understand.'' I argued, trying to imitate the way people spoke in Chinese novels.

''Why are you speaking like that?! You think that will save you.'' Sam said angrily. He summond a whip of light and locked onto me.

''C-calm down old man, this isn't a way to treat your only student.'' I tried to pacify the raging punisher.

''A student must be punished when they disrespect their teacher. Now, are you going to take it like a man, or should I tie you to a tree and beat the snot out of you?'' Sam laid out my options, both of which sounded painful.

''Fuck this!'' That's all I said before I flickered away, I created 9 clones to help conceal my location.

''Did you really have to hit me so hard.'' I complained, I was currently upside-down and tied to a tree branch.

''You're the one who chose this boy.'' Sam amusedly replied. He was enjoying this more than he should.

''I would have died if I didn't use your aid.'' I justified; Sam clearly didn't like my reply since I received another lash from him.

''Ugh!...I was wrong, please stop I have learned my lesson.'' I pleaded.

''I think you need to stay like this for a whole day and night.'' Sam said as he stroked his chin sagely.

''Please, anymore and I'll pass out.'' I begged again; blood was rushing to my head rapidly.

''You'll be fine, think of this as training.'' Sam said and bid me farewell.

Escaping from his ropes of light was practically impossible, if I struggled they tightened up and became even harder so I decided to check the system since I should've earned some decent points from the wolves. I willed the system to show me the notification.

[Host has earned 150 thousand points for killing 6 rank 3 wolves.] I nodded with satisfaction, it was a little disappointing that I missed my chance to earn points from a rank 5 beast, but its body and core was still worth something. For now, I'll just wait for the old man to free me, I guess.
