Chapter 17: Limits of chakra

3rd Person POV

Lethe and Sam stared down at each other, the atmosphere around them was as silent as death. No animal dared to even approach a place filled with dense battle intent and an intense bloodlust.

Both had different thoughts crossing their minds, Sam had recited it over and over to himself that he'd fight the boy as if he were trying to kill him. He'd still keep his power on the peak stage of the Qi liquification realm which was above the boy's power level of mid stage of Qi liquification.

Lethe only thought about using Sam as a way to improve, right now his strength would qualify him as a mid chunin, although his chakra was low chunin but due to his lack of experience he wouldn't be a problem to handle by someone with more energy than him person.

The two kept stearing at each other for a few more seconds, a gust of wind passed by them and ruffled their clothes, Sam immediately jumped into action.

He summoned a large golden broadsword through his light magic and blasted toward Lethe, he performed a downward horizontal swing, Lethe jumped back to dodge and threw tagged kunai at Sam's eyes.

An explosion of light engulfed Sam as he let out a bark of pain, Lethe didn't once let his guard down even after his attack connected, as if rewarded for his caution, he managed to evade a vertical swing of Sam's sword that came from behind him.

''Sneaky bastard.'' Lethe cursed under his breath as he evaded another barrage of attacks that slowly pushed him back.

''I heard that.'' Sam notified, his attacks also increased in strength and speed.

'Wind release: Vacuum wave.' Lethe went through a series of hand-seals, he spun around and released a blade of compressed air all around him.

Sam was unable to retreat in time, he quickly changed the form of his sword into a huge shield to block the lethal blade of wind.

He immediately took down the shield to look for Lethe, he saw four clones rushing at him at intense speeds, each holding the strange lightning swords used by the boy, two clones stabbed at either side of Sam, he easily blocked the attack with two smaller shields, he propelled the shields towards the clones and the impact was enough to eliminate them.

Sam suddenly felt a presence below him; the ground was pierced, and Lethe appeared, he stabbed a kunai towards Sam. Although taken by surprise, Sam's years of experience allowed him to react quicker and slice the attacker vertically in half. He didn't expect the clone to be made of a different element than the ones before.

Instead of a puff of smoke, a charge of electricity paralyzed Sam, although it was for a few seconds, this was more than enough to Lethe and the remaining clones to charge at him with a combination of his strongest techniques.

One of the clones got within range and used the blade of wind technique, a second clone appeared behind Sam and used the water pistol technique. The attacks were nullified by Sam by summoning shields. But what followed immediately after caused Sam to gape in surprise.

A huge volume of water came from above him and bashed him to the ground, soon followed another numb feeling as 10 thousand or so kilowatts of electricity ran through his body.

''Arg!!'' His cry of pain was distorted as he was drowning.

''Ha…ha…ha.'' A panting Lethe looked at the motionless Sam, Lethe couldn't help but frown in confusion. He expected the old monster to put up more of a fight than this.

He approached Sam's body, when he got within 5 meters, he threw a kunai at him, the kunai struck and pierced Sam, instead of blood, Sam's body burst into thousands of tiny lights. This confused Lethe but also caused him to be on guard once again.

''Not bad kid, if I hadn't switched places with my construct you might've actually won.'' Lethe was alarmed, he tried to jump away but a sudden strike to his neck sent him flying towards a tree.

''Argh….sh*t, how did you disappear like that?'' Lethe asked as he stared at an unbothered Sam.

''Simple, you mistook me for a close-range fighter, I actually specialize in illusions and my affinity happens to be light, just so happens I can also mold my Qi into weapons. You're also quite talented in illusions boy.'' Sam explained, his tone was that of a serious teacher.

''How could I know that if you don't tell me?'' Lethe grumbled as he stood up and tidied his clothes.

''What do you mean I'm good at casting illusions, can u just see it on my face or something?'' Lethe asked, he also started getting into his learning mode, he just asked more questions than usual.

''Don't you usually prefer to read books? Anyway, my bloodline is that of an ancient Kitsune, this makes me adept at illusions, I just learned to use different weapons due to the art I practiced. What I also said about you having potential was true, you were unconsciously leaking energy into your voice yesterday, this caused a weak illusion to be cast wherever your voice was heard and the closer one gets the more vivid the images.'' Sam explained, he also wondered just what the boy's powers were.

Although not as powerful as Qi, they also seemed more versatile for their user, other than Qi where even a monster level genius can only learn three techniques and even monsters only had affinity with 2 elements. Sam himself only learnt of 2 techniques in his life and he was considered to be a genius among geniuses.

This limitation did not seem to apply to the boy, he used three different elements without issue and although they weren't potent and seemed to consume more energy.

'Maybe they need a simple boost.' Sam, who was now lost in his thoughts started formulating a plan.

''Hey Lethe!'' He suddenly shouted and scared the youth who jumped back like a cat which had its tail stepped on.

''Jeez, surprise much, also why were your eyes giving off a sinister vibe a while ago?'' Lethe who was calming down started getting a weird vibe from Sam.

''Since you failed to beat me, you have to continue a three-month training program with me before you can leave.'' Sam stated, Lethe was ready to argue against Sam logical thought took control, he weighed his pros and cons and once he found that his cons outweighed the pros, he nodded, albeit a little saddened.

''Don't be like that boy, if I'm right this could boost the potency of your energy more than 20 times.'' Sam consoled.

''You had me at 20.'' Lethe perked up, his eyes gaining a curious glint, his hunger for knowledge always seemed to take priority over all else.

''Let's go, we have no time to lose.'' Sam hurried, he quickly teleported Lethe away, the youth cried and begged Sam to go back for his clothes, the old man assured him that he'll go back for them. He was just in a massive rush to even turn back.
