'I know this girl is not speaking to me....'
The voice sounded like it was against a grater and held a 'b*tchy' tone to it. She had not heard the woman speak before but it suited what she thought it would sound like. There was a certain haughtiness to it, as if she was a very entitled individual. However, as far as she knew she was not a member of the upper society. She was quite reserved and may not have interacted a lot but that did not mean she did not know who was there.
Her mother used to train her daily to recognize people's faces and remember their family history. It consisted of albums upon albums of families and their information. She remembered someones extended cousin twice removed, as long as they were a part of the desired tax bracket. Those albums were updated and restocked by her mother's secretary every time there was a significant change. The routine of doing that from childhood had been so engrained into her that she continued to do it till this day.
If the woman behind her was part of the rich, then she was not front this city nor any nearby ones. Its not like she denied that there were other rich people, its just that without this connection how would they have ever met? In school, she kept to herself there as well and went into the library during her free time. She didn't party as much and had a handful of names she remembered of her classmates. It was mainly the student representatives for the subjects and anyone who had explosive gossip about them too. The regular ones never came into her eyes because she was too involved with herself and she didn't care.
'Maybe she's from school?'
It didn't occur to her that university could also be an option. She graduated a year back and hasn't looked back ever since. Adding on, that during her time there she did never really had issues with anyone else. There were one or two incidents in her first year but people quickly gave up on her after realizing her background and attitude. The adjectives she heard being used to describe her were 'cold, loner, intelligent.' People used to call her 'ice queen' because she disappeared so often and did not interact either.
The only reason people did not call her mean was because she did not speak rudely to anyone. If someone came to her she would not turn away but she would also not make the first move to initiate anything. So people would try to invite her to things and her answer ninety percent of the time was 'no.' After hearing the same answer a couple of times people just stopped inviting her and let her be. Her time was completely filled with her mother's insistent training and trying to cram in as much computer knowledge as she could. She also had the idea of finishing her degree quicker which made her study unnecessarily hard.
Looking back, she should have gotten more involved and enjoyed her life. Considering how it all went down in her past life, she could have afforded to be more lenient on herself if that was the ending. With all that said, if this woman was someone from that time it would make a bit more sense why she recognized her but not the other way around.
Still, if that was the reason it did not justify the other's behaviour. The amount of anger and irritation against her was not normal. Her mind thought of potential reasons but none made sense without more information. She was curious to find out since she was quite literally standing behind her with a couple inches of a gap. Anyone in her position would be as well if they met such a person. Yet, she was also choosing to stay quiet and pretend like it wasn't happening.
Getting into another argument today would not end well for her and would probably cause a bigger scene than she needed. Her goal was to get the prepaid card and leave, if the woman followed her after then she could just ask security to have her removed.
The actions didn't go unnoticed by those around her either, she could see that they had gotten some looks from the workers. However, after seeing her calm expression they didn't interfere or try to help her. It wasn't really their problem either if she was silent on the matter as the victim.
Thankfully, other than stand close and make random noises she did not feel any more physical actions from her. If they decided to put hands on her then the problem would immediately escalate. Even now, as she spoke "are you done" that was just a verbal statement and easy to ignore. The question itself didn't even make sense if it was being addressed to her.
'Done with what? Done with standing? Done with typing? Done with existing?'
That's why she immediately thought they were speaking to someone else or even was on the phone. There was no indication that she was speaking to her nor was she looking to see either. However, fate had a funny way of playing with her since every time she thinks life will be peaceful she is reminded it won't be.
The woman spoke again, this time in a slightly louder voice.
"Are you done? Can you not hear me or??"
Looking around the office she tried to see if someone else was engaging with this. To her dread, they were all looking at her with pity. Which meant that the comments were directed at her and everyone was waiting to see her response.
Taking a short breath, she turned around partially and faced the woman again.
"Excuse me, are you talking to me?"
"If not you, then who else!"
"Oh I don't know, one of your other imaginary friends? Since I don't know why you would have to speak to me in such a manner unless you were uneducated or just I don't know, insane...?"
