Chapter 41: Unsettling Patterns, Part 1

Joe was working at his desk when Devon knocked and brought coffee in.

"I hope I'm right and you drink it black," he said handing a steaming cup to Joe. He took a lighter colored cup for himself.

"Making coffee isn't in the job description."

"No, but it's a good excuse for a break. I find I need to step back and let my subconscious work. It works better with caffeine."

Joe just raised his cup to Devon in salute. They finished their coffee in companionable silence. Joe was more impressed with this Younger every time he met him. When he put the empty cup down on the desk, Devon set his aside.

"What do you know about Councilor Molloy?" Devon asked.

"He is one of the five Eldest, had some unspecified health problems and pretty much retired from the public eye. He's still active in the Council as Chair."

"Someone very high in his office put the tags on those files." Devon looked up briefly.

Joe stared at his assistant.
