Chapter 44: Strange Carnivores

The first thing I did when I woke was check if I'd been asleep for another five years. Sherry in the chair beside my bed still looked like the eight-year old girl I'd fought to protect. She was wearing pajamas covered with teddy bears, still asleep and I let her stay that way. From the light in the room it was late morning. It wasn't a familiar room, so I guessed that it was Sherry's.

She moaned and opened her eyes. She screamed and threw herself at me when she saw my eyes open.

"I was so afraid that you wouldn't wake up again," she said. "I wasn't afraid of the monsters. I knew that you wouldn't let them hurt me, but there were so many of them. I'm glad Daddy came back. He's fixing the windows. Diana and Mars are OK now and Myrtle is going to be fine. They killed Myrtle's kittens." Sherry's tears wet my face and I held her tight and let her cry herself out. She fell asleep in my arms so I lay there and soaked in the love and trust that this girl had for me.
