Chapter 72

They were all inside the cramped space of the rectory. Priest Benedict was outside supervising the repairs to the church roof. Sir William was standing over Odo looking at his head wound and minor burns. "I have seen trauma such as this, and by God's grace, they survive. Fear not m'dear, I am sure your man will be hearty and hale. We will pray for his recovery."

Charlotte looked up and offered the Templar commander a smile. "Thank ye, Odo needs all the help he can get." She turned back to her patient and looked thoughtful. After a moment of silence she twisted around to face Sir William directly. "Why is this box important to ye? It contained only a letter from Oswald to Odo. The letter has no value to ye."

Reeve Petrus listened intently. Her question was also on his lips.

Sir William looked at Charlotte and saw a beautiful young woman; he saw her intelligence and strength hidden beneath naivety and innocence. The young injured herdsman was blessed to have such a fine lass.
