It was late afternoon when they rode into the small town. They found lodging and decided to visit the Preceptory the following morn.
Odo and Jagger talked. To Charlotte it was bewildering that both men, each from such different backgrounds and upbringing saw the world almost exactly the same. Jagger explained how he was always bullied when a child. Older children, sons and daughters of knights and noblemen saw Jagger purely as a target. As he grew older, they saw him as being soft, because he preferred to be quiet and not be the focus of attention. He came to learn that honour held little meaning for those who had so much.
As he explained, Sir Ector used him because of his family's wealth, for Sir Ector was wanting in wealth and lacked honour. "It wasn't all bad," he said. He'd received five years of intense and valuable training that few other knights could offer. While Sir Ector was a fallacious man, he was an expert swordsman and a gifted teacher when abstinent.
