Jagger was proving to be more than a trusted friend; his company and presence was a strong deterrent for anyone seeking to take advantage of them and both she and Odo valued the loyal sergeant more and more with each passing day.

He became more relaxed and grew in confidence; he smiled, laughed frequently, and lost some of the staidness he first brought with him when he came to Mellester. It was obvious to everyone he revelled in the responsibilities he assumed, and warmed himself to Odo and Charlotte's closest friends. Cathal, forever the augured exemplar, took kindly to Jagger and when time allowed, they would engage in deep philosophical discussions. The two most unlikely companions were becoming close friends, and certainly Cathal was becoming his mentor.
