Chapter 53: The Lab

He didn't have much time. Even isolating the woman behind a rundown tenement squashed between a dumpster and a stack of abandoned cardboard boxes only gave him so much of a reprieve. Once the Garbagemen arrived and realized what happened, they would start searching. Fresco didn't know if they could find him using their gifts or not, but wasn't willing to risk it.

One look at Joey's face told him not to bother asking him to leave.

Fresco used his power to hold Mrs. Connolly still, his telepathy already blocking her voice. She stopped screaming, at least. He was getting a headache from the psychic impression of it, even though to the normal world she was completely silent.

"You're going to cooperate," he told her, pressing down on her, his gift driving her to her knees. "When I let you go, you won't scream. Just answer my questions. Got it?"

She nodded quickly. He had to risk it. Fresco eased off the chokehold on her voice and was relieved when she only hitched out a soft sob.
