Chapter 54: Seeker

They made it three blocks before Joey stopped him.

Fresco turned to the hand on his arm and faced his young friend's anger.

"I can't believe you just let her go!" Joey's face was red, his eyes rimmed with tears. His thin body trembled with the force of his emotion. Rage literally poured out of him, washing over Fresco like a desperate animal, trying to pull him under as Joey's hatred struggled to drown him. "She's one of them!"

Fresco didn't reach out physically, but his gift embraced his friend. He had to move gently, knowing too much contact would cause Joey pain. And yet he needed that touch to share what he was feeling.

"Did you want me to kill her?" He showed Joey an image of her dead body. The boy flinched from the creation.

"I don't know." Joey jerked himself free of Fresco and sniffled a couple of times, his face wet with tears. "But you should have done something."
