Chapter 81: Filling In The Gaps

Didi listens in the deliciously warm water as her grandmother explains.

"When Sol developed cyber tech all those years ago," Emily says, one hand dangling in the bubbles, "he naturally tested it on himself to ensure its safety. His adaptations evolved and defined him, creating the technology that ultimately extended his life and made gunslingers possible."

That much Didi was already aware of thanks to Alfred and Elian. "But why, if he's enhanced, did the Galactic Conjunction make adding cybertech to humans illegal?" And why turn the gunslingers into heartless, mindless soldiers when it's clear from her grandparent's adaptations adding cyber systems does no harm to the human mind?

Or does it? Could the old lady before her be cracked and Didi doesn't know it yet? She's had, after all, over 200 years to perfect the show if that's what she wanted. And Didi's experience with Elian is proof enough she's not a great judge of character despite her desire to the contrary.
