Chapter 3: An Accident

Angel's POV:

I woke up loud music. What the hell? I got up and went downstairs. I paused and turned around. Tasha was asleep on my bed. The loud music was making my head hurt. I went downstairs. I saw my mama smoking and drinking with her friend, Shanae. She was like an Aunt to me. "Mama, what are you doing? Me and Tasha have school today." I said. She looked at me. "Then go to school. Time for y'all to get up anyways." She said as she put the cigarette out and chugged the last little bit of alcohol.

I closed my eyes. Its for Tasha. Hold on for a little bit longer. I turned around and went back upstairs. Tasha was still sleep. I thought about the night before. Kevin took me to get my sister. Why? He hates me. You don't know that. He showed it. He wouldn't have took you if he hated you. Bye May. I woke up Tasha and made her get ready for school. She took off to get ready. I got ready also.

I guess I should have let Kevin bring us home, but I don't want anybody to know where we lived and see how bad it is. Or even let a bunch of dudes know where we live so they can come by unannounced. Tasha ran back into the room. "Tasha how come you slept in my room?" I asked her. "I was scared to be by myself. That vampire might come back." She said. "Tasha he's not coming back. In fact, that was his only time seeing you. He didn't wanna hurt you. Besides you were staring at him. He doesn't like that baby girl. Now come one I'll take you to school. If you're good, I'll take you to Dairy Queen." I said. "Yayyy!!" She screamed.

"Shhh. You gotta be quiet. Don't tell mama." I said. She ran downstairs and outside. I grabbed the keys and walked out. I said my goodbyes to them but they didn't care. I drove Tasha to her school. I looked at her. She was in her car seat, looking out the window, humming Dora's theme song. I pulled up and said my goodbyes and pulled off. I looked at my phone. I don't like texting and driving, but I needed to know how much the I got left. 7:44. Aww man. I gotta hurry up. I drove a little faster.

I finally pulled up and ran up to the cafeteria. I needed my breakfast. I got mine and ran to the library. I bumped into somebody. "Oww what the fuck?" Said a voice. Aww no. It was Charlotte. "Bitch, watch where the fuck your going next time." She said. I stayed quiet. I don't like confrontation. "What? Too scared to reply?" She asked. I stayed quiet. She rolled her eyes and walked around me. I bit my lip. I felt a lump in my throat. No nooo. You are not gonna cry for this bitch. You better suck it up.

I got up and walked away. "Wow. That was pathetic." Said a voice. Oh my God no. "Ya know most people would've at least responded. Even if it was to say sorry." Kevin said, his Irish accent kicked in. I bit my lip. "Really Angel? Nothing? You are weak." He said and walked off. The lump returned. I ran to my class and before the bell rung. I put my hoodie on and cried silently, letting my tears hit my notes. I felt a hand on my back. I looked up. It was a blond girl.

^Kacey Thompson

"Sweetie are you ok?" She asked me. I sniffed and tried to put a smile on my face. I nodded. "No you're not. Wanna talk about it?" She asked. I couldn't speak. I wasn't used to having friends. "Sweetie its okay. You can talk to me. My name is Kacey Thompson. What's yours?" She asked. "My name is Angel Starlight." I said. "Are you new?" She asked. I shook my head. "No I've been here for two years." I said.

"That's impossible. I know every student here. And I've never seen you here before." She said. "I stay in the background. I don't do attention." I said. "That's probably why I've never seen you before." She said smiling. I felt uneasy. The only people I've ever had a real conversation with is Mr. & Mrs. Graves. "Sweetie what's wrong? I didn't mean to upset you." She said. "No it's not that. I'm just not used to someone talking me for long. I'm incredibly shy. I don't like being around a whole lot of people. I faint." I said. She stared at me. Maybe I told her too much.

"So how do you handle being here at school?" She asked. "Its hard, but I manage. In between classes, I got the library. I love books." I said. She smiled. "Me too. My favorite is R. L. Stine. His books terrify me. They give me a rush of terror. I love it." She said excitedly. I smiled. I think I may have finally found a friend. Yeah. Finally. I'm so proud of you. Try not to mess this up. The test of the class went by. Me and Kacey spent it talking to each other.

It turns out she has three classes with me. I had so much fun with this girl. "Hey would you like to come to my house after school?" She asked. "I can't. I have to pick up my little sister from school and then I have to go to work." I said. She stopped smiling. "Can't your mom pick her up?" I shook my head. I just met this girl. Im not telling her about my situation. "Oh. Where do you work at?" She asked. "I work at Graves Library." I said. Its just a library. No harm there.

She smirked. "Maybe I'll come by after school." She said and walked off to her class. I smiled. I finally have a friend. And its not someone to make you do their homework. I know!! I walked away to go to the library. I picked out my books and walked towards the counter. I noticed one of Kevin's caretakers was at the door and he was eyeing me. Oh God. Don't tell me he's around. "Well look ahere. Someone's in a better mood." Kevin said.

He said, as he walked from behind me. "Yes I am. Now goodbye." I said quickly. I gathered my books and walked away quickly. He caught up to me. He caught me around my waist. "Whoa now. I wanna know. What's got you all cheerful?" He asked. I looked down at his arm. "Oh sorry." He said. He removed his arm. For some reason, I wanted it back. "No its not that. What's on your arm?" I asked. He pulled back down his sleeve. It looked like cuts on his arm.

"Its nothing. I have wild cats. They're very playful. You should have one." He said. "No thank you. I'm more of a dog person." "Really? What's your favorite?" He asked. "A pitbull. I love them because they're natural born fighters." I said. He frowned at me. "They're something your not. They love to fight. You don't. You couldn't even put up a fight with Charlotte." He said. I got pissed. "So? Ya know, violence is never the answer. Neither is killing yourself." I shouted, without even thinking.

He stared at me. I instantly felt bad. He eyes started glowing red. I got scared. "Wait Kevin, I- I didn't mean-" I started. He pushed past me and walked out the room. He caretakers followed him. I looked around the room. Everyone was staring at me. I looked down and walked out the room. I had to get away. You forget you have school. Aww man. I can't face him after what I just said. You got to. And he was right. Your not a fighter. But you need to be. I know. I walked right into my next class. Kevin sat at the very back. He glared at me. Then I noticed Kacey on her phone.

She looked up and smiled at me. I put up a weak smile. I sat beside her. "Hey gurl. What's wrong?" She asked. Instead of saying it out loud, I wrote it down. I knew he was listening so I had to. I wrote it down and passed the note to her. She read it then slyly looked back she made it looked causal. She wrote back for me not to worry about it. "By the way, what ate you?" She asked. I turned to her. "I'm a mermaid. What are you?" I asked.

"I'm a witch." She said. All magical beings can sense when another one is nearby. I widened my eyes at her. "Aren't you guys like, incredibly dangerous? Like vampires?" I asked. She smirked. "We can be. But you don't have to worry about anything. I'm not gonna hurt you Angel." She said then turned to take notes. I did the same. Class was over before we knee it. All we did was take notes on he nervous system.

"So Angel, mind if I come by your place? Or your job?" She asked. No. Not my place. "My job. I can't have company over." I said. I didn't want her to know where I live so she can judge me. "Alright I'll be seeing you. Hey how about you come to my house this weekend?" She asked. I thought about it. "Sure why not. I'll see you." I said she gave me her address. I walked away and outside to the car. I felt like I was being watched again. I looked up to see the same hooded figure.

I stared at them as they stared at me. Angel its time to stop being scared. Be a pit bull. Fight back. Your right. "Hey you!" I yelled out. I ran after them. The figure ran into the woods. I ran after them. I looked around but saw nothing. Damn it. And I wasn't close enough to figure out his scent. Then it hit me. Thyme. I ran to follow the scent. I followed it to a creek. No way. Why not? I don't feel like swimming. I shook my head and ran back.

I got back to my car and drove to pick Tasha up. I pulled up to see police cars out here. Oh God no. Please God don't let anything bad happen to her. I got out and ran inside. I looked around for Tasha. "Angel?" Called a voice. "I turned to look and saw Tasha in the nurse's office. "Oh my God Tasha. Are you okay baby girl? What happened?" asked her. I hugged her. "Angel she's all right. There was an accident here at the school. The heater for the school exploded. Tasha is not badly hurt but she was nearby. She has a few cuts and a broken arm but she'll be fine." Said the nurse.

I looked at Tasha. She was sucking on a lollipop. "Thank you but I'll take her home now." I said. I grabbed Tasha and walked out. "Tasha are you sure you're okay?" I asked. "I'm fine. I was good at school, can I have my ice cream now?" She asked. "Yeah, I'll get you some ice cream baby girl. Here watch Dora on my phone." I said, as I gave her my phone. I pulled up at Dairy Queen. I ordered a vanilla ice cream and a chocolate ice cream. "Tasha do you think you you can stay home, til I get off work?" I asked her.

She shook her head. I sighed. "Okay, you can come with me to work with me." I said. I drove to the library. Thank God it was just an accident

Had it been anything else, it would've killed her. I pulled up and got out. I grabbed Tasha and walked inside. "Ah Angel there you are. Oh hi there Tasha. Oh my goodness what happened to you sweetheart?" Mrs. Graves asked. "A heater blew up at school but I'm fine. But its okay. Angel got me ice cream." She said. "Oh that's terrible. Come on. You can watch kid shows back here." Mrs. Graves said.

I trusted her. She never gave me a reason not to. Tasha been here so many times, I've gotten used to it. I got to work on the books. I started stacking and sorting the books since I couldn't last night. Tasha kept falling asleep so they let me go early. "Angel calm down there sweetheart. It was just an accident. She's safe now." Mr. Graves said. "I know but I almost lost her. She was only feet away from the heater." I said.

"But she's okay. She's not badly hurt. Just a broken arm. Your not gonna lose your sister any time soon." He said and walked off. I turned back. He's right. I should calm down. But about that strange hooded figure? I'm gonna find out who it is.
