Lies

-Your POV-

"Hey, Y/N?" You looked up and nearly ran into Hyunjin as you were walking down the hall to go to your art class.

"Oh, hi," you replied, "what's up?"

Hyunjin scratched his neck, "I was wondering if you would like to go to a party that I'm hosting this weekend."

You did a quick mental rundown of your schedule. There didn't seem to be a problem, so you agreed to his invitation, "okay." The smile he gave you was glowing.

At lunch, you found Jisung at the table frowning and sat down next to him as usual, "What's wrong?" you asked. Jisung shook his head, his gaze twisting to an unreadable glare that you hadn't seen him use on you since the first day you met him. His frown remained through your language class while he stared out the window, his head turned away from you. It made you wonder what he was thinking, but it was something you would never get the answer to.

The bell to transition to the next class rang, jolting you out of your troubled thoughts.

"Y/N," You heard him say, softly. You glanced up at your seat partner who hadn't talked to you since lunch.

"What is it, Jisung?"

"I have an assignment, tonight, so I won't be going to the library after school."

*Ah. Assignment.

You shuddered, recalling the night that you stood with a gun pointed to your head in the chip aisle of a convenience store and wondered why he had to do this kind of job. Why was he an assassin in the first place? Again, it was inevitable that this question would never be answered.

You nodded at Jisung, feeling numb, "Okay, thank you for letting me know." You grabbed your backpack and began to brush past him to head to your next class when his hand grabbed your wrist, pulling you back to him.

The tall boy leaned over until his face was level with yours and for a few brief seconds, your heart at the closeness of his lips to yours.

"Y/N, don't forget to smile."

You were busy studying in the library at the end of school, alone, when out of the corner of your eye, you saw Jisung's chair move beside you. You looked up to reprimand whatever student had just dared to sit in your friend's sacred spot only to find that the said "punk" was indeed Hwang Hyunjin.

*How unfortunate.

"Oh, hi, Y/N, I didn't know that it was you," he said, sitting down. You forced a quick smile and returned to working your math problems.

While you were working, you noticed that Hyunjin seemed to be having problems with his own math worksheet, checked his worksheet full of incorrect answers, and giggled to yourself as you pulled your chair closer to him to show the correct way to solve them.

"Wow, you're so good at math!" Hyunjin awed over your ability to teach him the concept that he hadn't understood at all, probably because you'd caught him sleeping in the back of the classroom, today. You had to shake your head at the thought, though you smiled. Hyunjin was sweet.

*No, Y/N. You can't let yourself do this.

You slipped back int your mask of indifference.

*Not today, Hyunjin.

"Do you have anywhere to be, today?" You glanced up.

"No, why?"

"Ah, would you like to go to the coffee shop with me. They are having a buy one get one free day."

You contemplated this for a second, never mind what Jisung would say- that was out of the question as you could already hear him saying, "No." in your head- and smiled politely at Hyunjin.

"I would like to go, but I have to go home. My mom is expecting me to be there early to help her make dinner." It was a lie, of course, but you didn't feel like getting his hopes up about you possibly liking him, again.

His disappointment was noticeable, "Ah, that's okay."

"Don't worry, I'm still going to the party."

"Mhm. You better." He lightly punched your arm, playfully. You punched him back in retaliation.

"You're cute, Y/N," Hyunjin said. He pinched your cheek and you blushed. Being around this kid was too much for you to handle. His laugh. His cinnamon roll smile.

But, this was the Hyunjin that you knew.

-Jisung's POV-

Jisung glanced out the window of the bus, watching the scenery going by. He frowned to himself, rethinking what he had just seen in the library. Why was Y/N talking more with Hwang Hyunjin, lately? He shook his head of the thoughts. He wasn't even supposed to be there.

*Why should I care about Y/N this much? To have her not be involved with me?

He looked down at his hands and carefully made his choice.

Y/N wanted to be with Hyunjin.

He was an assassin.

He and Y/N were probably never meant to be in the first place. It would be hard, but he knew he had to do it so that she could live a life without knowing his pain.

*I can do this. I can let her go.

-

Oh, how the mind lies to protect itself from pain.
