Sleep

Max stood out in the snowy path as he tried to order a warm cup of coffee out of the vending machine but his trembling hands would not allow him to press the button.

Taking the money out of his pocket, something else came out and he bent down to look at it.

It was a picture of the day on Carlotta's birthday where everyone was not ready but ready at the same time.

He couldn't help but smile when he saw that picture before he began to feel dread fill him again.

They have to be alive. They just have to.

He thought of the look on Carlotta's face once he shouted at them only minutes ago.

All the smile and the happiness that was on her face disappeared as she looked at the blood that covered her body.

"I'm sorry." He said, sitting down beside the vending machine as he listened to it hum. "I didn't mean it that way."

The horror on her face as she looked at him then at her hands replied over and over again in his mind.
