Intern

"Giddy up, Giddy up giddy up." Leira muttered singing along the song played on tv as she throw some cheese on her sandwiches for her breakfast.

She yawned but froze when she heard the door upstairs closes. She stood frozen for a few seconds and relaxed as she remembered.

"Oh right, Kai." She starts cutting the tomatoes carefully but that lasted for a second before she paused again.

"Wait, I thought they went to work together?"

"Why are you holding the knife like that?"

"Potential defense weapon- oh. It is you then." Leira resumed cutting her tomatoes. Kai chuckled lightly and sat on the stool at the kitchen island counter.

He was wearing the usual white shirt with a pair of formal beige colored pants. His tie was loose as he wanted to be comfortable for awhile before being stuck with it the whole day.

"Coffee?" She asked when she wrapped up all of her sandwiches neatly. She took off her apron and straightened up her outfit. She picked off the bread crumbs on her top. Kai smiled at her get up.

Its always nice to see people with good fashion sense. Leira's black colored fitted long sleeve crop top with a high waisted loose jeans really compliments her waist.

"With hundred pumps of sugar syrup."

"Bro, today hasn't even started yet and you still looked like you haven't slept in a year."

"Give me one reason I should still be a doctor." Kai groaned. Leira put the cup of coffee in front of him.

"You fix bones and thats nice."

"Wow, now I feel motivated to work. Thanks, Lei." Kai said sarcastically while Leira just smiled cheekily.

Although they had just get to know each other, they clicked just fine.

Her phone pings as she put her sandwiches inside her bag. She let out an unintended sigh.

"What could possibly makes Miss Lei here sigh right in front of her sandwich?" Kai said interestedly making Leira made a face at him.

"I'm going. You go to work, Doctor. Here, have some sandwich."

"Thanks. I'm too lazy to go out to have lunch."

"How can you be lazy to eat? Its food." Leira said cocking up her eyebrow.

"Please, there's unlimited food in my office."

"Let me guess, it's cuz' you don't share."

"Bingo, Lei. Bingo." Kai winked at her playfully.

"Good job Doctor Kai." Leira chuckled and head to the door. Kai followed suit and walked besides her.

"Thank you thank you."

"Quick question."

"I love Lei's questions time."

"Right, how come you can leave late to work? Is your dad the one who runs the hospital or what?"

"That's two questions. I can only answer one." Kai said jokingly. Lei narrowed her eyes at him.

"Ok haha, bye Kai." Lei laughed and walked out of the gate of their house but Kai pulled her back.

"Come, I'll drop you off. I live in the same house as your boyfriend, I should do my part." He grinned and lead her to the passenger side of his car.

"Looks like I'll be arriving at campus faster than usual." Leira snorted.

"How are you feeling today, Evan?" Seunwo asked the young boy who had bandages around his head.

"I'm good. I miss home.." The boy said as he looked at the iv drop attached to him. The doctor smiled softly at him.

"You will go home if you finish your lunch and eat your medicine. Can you do that?"

"Okay.." The boy said cutely. Seunwo can't help but to pat his head.

"Good boy." He said as he flip through his list and about leave when he felt a tug on his coat.

"Can I see my mommy?"

"Your mommy is resting right now. When shes awake, I'll let you know, okay?"

"Okay." Evan let go of his coat and slowly eat his food.

Seunwo smiled at him and stepped out of the pediatric wad. He was walking to the computer to log in the patients data when he heard his name called.

"Han! Dr Han."

"Oh, Elaine." Seunwo faced the intern.

"Can you help me?" She said worriedly.

"What is it?"

"I need to prepare the examination room but I can't bring all of these stuff my own."

"Alright. Next time, you should bring a trolley." Seunwo said and took one of the boxes.

"Thanks, Dr Han." Elaine beamed at him happily and Seunwo just plastered his usual smile.

"Seunwo looked like a giant next to our little Elaine." The attending doctor said as he passed by them. Seungwoo just chuckled while Elaine smiled to herself shyly.

They walked into the elevator side by side and people cant help but to notice their height differences.

Silence fills the atmosphere when they were alone in the shaft until Elaine spoke up.

"Um, can I come see you when you're on break? I want to ask you something."

"Sure."

"Eggezeplain, woman."

"I forgot, he forgot. Thats probably it." Leira said shortly knowing well whats going to happen next.

Leira and Chae were hanging out at Leira's condo as usual to finish their paperwork. It was already 8pm and they still lounging around there.

"I'm not even surprised that he forgot but you?"

"Fine, I didn't."

"Yes you did. Dohyon told me- what?" Chae stopped applying her nail polish.

"I put reminder on my phone so I won't forget." Leira stood up and went to her kitchen to take some water.

"Huh?"

"I was hoping he would remember after I went to Jeju but he didn't and I can't help but to lie to Hwi and Dohyon because.."

"They would be vocal about it to Seunwo AS IT SHOULD. What the hell Lei?"

"I can't do that to Seunwo, Chae. Hes already tired enough." Leira sighed sadly.

"Come on-"

"Trust me. I planned to kept quiet about it , confront him after but I know he's going to realize that he forgot our first anniversary so I made him believe I forgot too."

"I don't understand how your brain works." Chae groaned.

"I love him, Chae. I really do so please, please don't tell the guys about this okay? For me?" Leira said hopefully. Chae softened at this side of Lei.

"Ugh, fine, alright. Okay okay! Come here you sad doll." Chae opened her arms for Lei.

"I'm not sad. Just disappointed. Besides-" Lei got cut off when her phone rang. Chae cocked her eyebrow as she saw the caller id.

Lei narrowed her eyes at her friend before taking the call.

"Hey."

"Where are you?"

"I'm at home."

"No you're not."

"Yes I am."

"No you're not. I'm alone here in this big minimalistic mansion!"

"That's Seunwo's. Get some sleep Kai. You could be on call anytime so use your rest time wisely." Leira said and ignored Chae's stares.

"You sound like my mom." Kai snorted.

"Well, son. Go to sleep." She played along.

"Haha, but seriously where are you?"

"I am at home. My house."

"You're staying alone?" Kai asked worriedly. Leira cant help but to chuckle.

"Now you sound like my dad."

"Come back home early, my daughter." Kai said it slightly deep voice earning a good laugh from her.

"I'm going there in a bit. I left my papers there."

"Your car fixed?"

"Nope. They said another day or two. I'm just gonna uber home." Leira plopped down at her sofa as Chae rolled to her.

"Give me your address. I'm your new chauffeur."

"You just don't want to sleep, don't you?"

"Wow lady, you know me so well." Kai said on the other side of the line.

"I'll text you the address, bro."

"Okay bro."

Leira hang up the call chuckling and send him the address.

"What was that all about?" Chae asked getting excited.

"My chauffeur is picking me up."

"Is this Kai, THE Ice Prince Kai?" Chae squint her eyes.

"Idk about that but if you're talking about Kai, Seunwo's friend then yes. Thats him."

"He's back in Korea? When did you get chummy with him?"

"I met him at the doctor's party or whatever that is."

"And he's picking you up because??"

"We live in the same house." Leira said shortly making Chae gasped.

"You sly bitch."

"Oh shut up, he's Seonwo housemate." Leira rolled her eyes.

"Lucky bitch."

"K."

Then her phone pings.

Ms Lei, I have arrived at your lobby. - Kai

"He's here. You want a ride too?" Leira asked closing her laptop.

"Nope. I think I'm going to spend the night here. Is that ok?"

"Why are you asking?" She snorted at Chae.

Chae used to live in this house with her until she decided to stay with her dad. Chae grinned and playfully kicked her.

"Bye sis."

Seunwo was about to rest his eyes in the on call room when he heard the door opened.

"Seunwo- I mean Dr Han?"

"Yeah." He said tiredly which came out in a husky voice.

"Oh sorry, were you sleeping? I can come back later." She said sadly. Seunwo sighed and just shook his head.

"What do you want to ask about?" Although tired, it is just in his nature to not turn down people.

"Um, well.." Elaine started talking about her dream to become like him and how she see him as his motivation.

She had known him ever since she started studying in SNU and tried to be friends with him to which she sometimes call him by his name in the hospital out of habit. Being the nice guy he is, Seunwo answered all her questions purely because of her interest to become a good general surgeon in the future. Without him knowing, an hour had passed and Elaine started to become extra friendly to him.

"Seunwo, when is your off day?"

"Next month."

"Oh-" She was cut off when his phone rang. She was quick enough to catch a glance of the caller id when Seunwo answered the call.

"Is there something wrong?" He asked immediately as Leira rarely calls him unless there's emergency or she had to go somewhere.

"Not at all. I'm outside now, if you're hungry when you get back, there's some leftover sandwich. Anyways, did I wake you up or something? You sounds like when you're in the morning trying hard to get up." Leira asked chuckling. The corner of Seunwo's lips rose a bit.

He didn't notice the girl in front of him staring and listening to their conversation.

"No, I was just talking. You're outside with the guys? Oh and also, I don't think I can go to dinner tomorrow. I'm on call."

"Talking with who?" This time Kai's voice came out on the phone. Then he heard Lei shushing him.

"Don't listen to people's phone call, old man... Seunwo, Its fine, I can just invite the trio to eat with me and you don't have to answer him. Kai is being a dad."

"Kai is with you?"

"Yeah, he wanted to find fried chicken all of a sudden. Your friend is weird. Hey-" Leira said and Seunwo could hear Kai protesting in the background and the sound of the phone being grabbed could be heard.

"Who you talking to huh? It better not be Elen." Kai said as he got a hold of her phone.

"It's Elaine." Seunwo said correcting him and Kai groaned. The girl who sat on the bunk bed in front of him, looked at him and Seunwo just waved her off.

"Elen Elaine no differences." Kai rolled his eyes. Leira paused when she heard the name.

"Elaine from school?" She asked softly. Kai nodded and put on the speaker.

"Yeah. She's an intern here. You know her, Lei?" Seunwo asked. Elaine's ears perked up when she heard the name.

"Yeah, we were in the same batch. Anyways, don't push yourself too hard and please sleep when you got the chance to, Han Seunwo. Don't be like your friend Kai, using his free time to pester people."

"I will." He chuckled.

"Ok, I'm hanging up. Bye, love you." She said as she felt her throat drying. Seunwo just hummed and Leira ended the call.

Looking at the phone briefly, Seunwo tucked his phone back to his pocket. Following Lei's reminder, he laid down on the bed while sighing.

"Do you need anything else?" He asked as he realize that the girl is still there. Elaine shook her head briefly before asking.

"Are you still with Kim Leira?"

Seunwo hummed agreeing and closed his eyes. He heard the girl stood up and went out of the room. Not thinking about it much, he finally got to rest.

Even just for awhile.

With the thought of Kai being friendly with Leira at the back of his mind.
