Prologue

Four years ago, 2000, August 24, Hazel's twelfth birthday, Cultus Lake water park, Canada.

"Hazel! Come back here! It's time for presents and cake!" Laughing with my friends, I turn back towards my mom, smiling and waving. "Coming momma!" Running towards the canopy where my momma is, I stop short, looking at a boy about my age being yelled at by his parents. Waiting there for a second until his parents send him off, I follow him towards one of the little water spouts.

"Hi! I'm Hazel and I am turning twelve today! Wanna come eat some cake?" The boy looks up at me with watering eyes. He slowly nods and stands up. I grab his hand and pull him along with me.

Once we get to the canopy I introduce him to my favorite friend, Charlotte. Charlotte stops playing with one of my other friends and looks at the boy skeptically. "I think I know you." Looking between I look at their very confused faces. "Well, Charlotte, this is- Wait, what's your name?" The boy stammers and finally gets his name out. "Its Emmet." Smiling I introduce them. "Well then! Charlotte, Emmet, Emmet, Charlotte!" Emmet slightly waves.

My mom comes over and bends down next to Emmet. "And who might you be? Did hazel already make another friend today!" Emmet slightly nods. "Well, Well, Well! Hazel! You got two new friends today!" I happily nod and drag them both over to the cake. "Momma! Come light it." My mom laughs and comes over with the lighter. "Okay!" She lights the candles and everyone starts singing happy birthday to me. After everyone finishes, I blow out the candles.

My mom claps and starts to take the candles out one by one. Soon enough the cake is good to eat and my mom cuts the very delicious looking cake.

Getting the first slice, Emmet and Charlotte get the second and we all dig in.

Playing around for a little longer, people start to leave. Soon enough, Charlotte and Emmet's parents call them. Saying bye to them, I make sure to get their phone number.

Waving as they walk off, I had no idea what I was getting myself into....

{Disclaimer. I don't live in Canada. I live in texas so I have no clue how high schools work over there. I also don't have social anxiety so like please forgive if I don't represent social anxiety right)

Emmet

Four years later, 2004, May 14, last day of school for the week, Bodwell High school, Canada.

The lunchroom, the scariest part of high school for someone with social anxiety, especially when you are in one of the most prestigious schools in Vancouver Canada.

"Okay, Emmet. You got this." Walking towards the farthest table in the back where Hazel and Charlotte sit. I look down as I walk towards them, my stomach feeling nauseated and my body trembling. Mumbling to myself, "I can't embarrass my self by just walking to them." Lifting my head, I look around and see people laughing. "They aren't laughing at you. No. They aren't. It's okay." Feeling my heart rate go up, I go faster until I am sitting down next to Hazel, not being able to properly catch my breath.

Hazel and Charlotte stop rolling and look at me. "Hey, Emmet? Are you okay?" Nodding, I feel Hazel's hand on my forehead. "You're a little hot don't you think?" Sharing my head, I look up. "No. I am fine. Just give me a moment." Hazel nods and squeezes my hand before going back to eating. Charlotte glares for a split second I think I am just imagining it when she goes back to smiling and laughing. Shaking my head, I go back to eating.

Charlotte

Glaring at Hazel for a split second, I realize what I am doing and quickly go back to smiling and laughing at whatever Hazel said.

Taking a look at Emmet, I know he is meant for me. We are both from the other side. We can't find love there, but here, we can find it all. We will be together. I know we will. I will do everything in my power to make sure Hazel ends up on the other side forever. She already as the power and she already took everything from me. Even if she doesn't know it yet.

Going back to listening to Hazel, I grab my purse with my school supplies and wait for Emmet who has the same class next.

Following him out of the lunchroom, I make sure he doesn't get too much anxiety as we walk through the crowded hallway.

Once we get to the classroom, we sit in the very back, me behind Emmet, and to the side.

As the class starts I think of the ways I can get Hazel to the other side. Emmet, of course, would have to stay here, but Hazel, I will get her to the other side, I promise that.

Writing down the class notes, I stare at Emmet before going back to the notes so I don't get called out.

Squeezing Emmet's hand, I make sure he is fine. When he says he is, I go back to eating. Looking down I talk to Charlotte. "Charlotte? You know there was a robbery at the local market?" Charlotte looks over to me and starts to laughs and smile. Not knowing what was so funny about, I start to say something to her but the bell rings. She gets up very fast and waits for Emmet. After he throws his trash away, they zoom off, Charlotte's hand on his shoulder.

Not knowing what happened I start towards my next class, my backpack over my shoulder. Walking in, I run into Adam, one of the smartest kids in class. Saying sorry, I push past him, sitting down in my usual chair.

As the second bell rings, I take out my notebook and listen to my algebra teacher. Writing down notes, I start to fade away from class, thinking about something from a few days ago.

Something is slammed on my desk and I look into the eyes into a very annoyed teacher. "Hello? Ms. Fi?"

"Oh! Sorry, Mr. Rodgers."

"Yeah. Hazel, can you tell me the answer to this question?"

"Can you tell me the answer to life?"

My teacher stops and points towards the door. "For the third time this week, go to the principles office." Raising my hands I try to apologize. "No! Go, Hazel!" Sighing, I get my stuff together, the other students laughing as walk out of the door.

It's just another day of my mouth getting me in trouble.
