As I walk up the driveway, I couldn't help but wonder what would happen once I knock on that door. My door. Would they welcome me in? Would they even realize that I had been missing for the last couple of days? Maybe I should just grab some stuff and book a hotel room? Then they can have the place to themselves and I would still be getting the credit I need. I mean, I would still technically be hosting them so what would be the problem?
With a sigh I twist the door knob, but to no extent was I able to open it. They locked it. Why would they lock it? Its ten o'clock in the morning for crying out loud! I rap my knuckles on the door but retreat them when I hear nothing. They're not home. Great, I don't even have my keys with me! They were in my duffel that I left at his house. Maybe I could sneak around back? Nope, I had them put a fence in for Drake, dammit!
Gathering my last pieces of pride, I jump over Harper's fence and trudge up to his door. but before I could start to knock, the door was pulled open and all I could hear was shouting. In front of me, stood a teary eyed little girl.
"Princess? Honey what's wrong?" I scooped Brooke up in my arms and let her hug my neck. Her sobs racked my ears and I couldn't stand to hear her crying. "Honey, who did this to you? Who made my little princess cry?"
It takes a few minutes for her to get rid of her last couple of hiccups but when she could speak , she wasn't speaking. Words were tumbling out of her mouth and breaths were coming up short.
"Brooke honey, i'm going to need to you calm down a little okay? Now take a nice deep breath." When I said 'take a nice deep breath' I didn't expect her to breath in through her mouth, puff out her cheeks and hold it. "No princess, I meant breathe in and then breathe out" At that statement she started to giggle and soon enough I joined in. But knowing my luck, Harper was bound to come storming out of the house after her.
"Brooklyn Mavis Oakley! Now you come back here right this minute young lady! That is not how we leave the breakfast table!" I was surprised to hear a woman's voice yelling instead of Harper's though.
By the time the woman had made her way to the front door, Brooke was already behind my legs, hiding. "Excuse me, Young woman but would you kindly move so I can get my daughter to finish her breakfast? Thank you, I won't be a moment." I look behind me at Brooke and mouth a sorry at her face that held betrayal.
"Now, what can I do for you..."
"Oh! Sorry, how rude of me. My name is Luna, Luna Willows. Um, I had a project to do with Harper and I accidentally left my duffel here. Um, I was wondering if I could grab it? It has my house keys in it, so I am unable to get into my house."
"How have you been able to get in your house the last couple of days?" She sends me an accusing glare.
"Uh well you see, I haven't been home the last couple of days." She throws me a disgusted look.
"Filthy! And you hang around my children!"
"Um, sorry? I don't understand." Her eye begins to twitch.
"Oh I think you do, and let me tell you. My son will not be throwing his life away for an accidental pregnancy! I don't want you around my house ever again do you understand."
"Oh please miss! I assure you i'm nothing like that!" She gives me the stink eye.
"Then where have you slept these past nights?"
"The hospital" My voice was barely a whisper.
"What?!"
"I have been sleeping at the hospital. Something happened after I left the other day and I was put in the hospital." Her eyes soften and she starts to calm down.
"Okay. I have done some cleaning up in the house and I put all the loose duffel bags in Harper's room. Why don't you run up there and grab it?"
"Um sure, but would it be too much trouble to ask for some directions to his room?" I ask sheepishly. She gives me an approved smile and motions for me to follow her. We walk down a hallway and up some stairs. Finally, we come to a stop in front of a crème coloured door with the name 'Harper' painted onto it with a delicate background of a feather.
She opens the door and announces "Harper! You have company." and retreats back downstairs. I slowly walk into his room. As soon as I get into the middle of the room I spot my duffel... In Harper's hands.
"You looking for something?" His hair was a mess and he had dark circles around his eyes.
"Uh, yeah. That." I point to the duffel in his hands.
"I'm sorry." Was his reply. This confused me.
"Sorry for what?"
"I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions. Brooke explained everything to me, and well I understand that you were just trying to protect her and that Avery had lunged at you first." I stood there, speechless. Never in my right mind would I ever think that Harper Oakley would apologize to me.
"Look Harper its okay. I just want to grab my bag and go have a proper sleep in my bed." At that he looks at the ground guiltily.
"Its my fault." He sits down on his bed and holds his face in his hands. "Its my fault that you've been in the hospital for the last couple of days." I don't say anything because in some ways he is right, but if he hadn't of kicked me out I wouldn't of met that guy.
