Leviathan stood frozen in the doorway. The person outside remained idle and made no attempt to step inside.
I looked at Sirius, who had the same face as I most likely did at that moment.
Did I hear that correctly? He said his name was Lucifer?
"Uhm, Leviathan?" Lykfilia started. "Maybe you should invite him in, we should probably listen to what he has to say."
"He's not a vampire, he doesn't have to be invited in, he could enter at any time. "
"Well yeah, that's true, but this is Spectre's tavern for lord's sake, who knows what kind of murderous trap spells are here on intruders. Besides, I'm just being polite." Lucifer replied.
I nodded my head, contemplating that answer. There's truth to what he says. I really don't want to know what traps have been set up against people entering without permission.
Leviathan spoke again.
"You may have known your way here, but how can we know for sure that you are who you say you are?" the question came off more as an accusation than the former, and I could sense uncertainty in his voice.
Lucifer shrugged and took the weapon off his back.
It was a rather long, broad sword, made to be held with two hands yet he casually let it rest in the palm of one as he spoke.
"We could always go outside, have a little convincing duel? Unless of course, you'd rather take your chance and just believe me right off the bat. "
Leviathan swallowed hard. "Yeah I think that was convincing enough, if you really are who you say you are, you'd probably kill me within seconds. Please do come inside."
Leviathan pulled up another chair, setting it at the table. We all moved over as it to make space that was already there.
"So, what did you say you needed help with?" Leviathan asked him. We all looked at him expectantly.
"Well you see, news travel fast between demons, especially in the void. Which is where I've been for the past thousand years or so. I don't know at this point. There is practically no way of telling time in the void, you just live each day on it's own, with no method of keeping track of the passing of weeks, months and years. But that's not what I came here for. " Lucifer paused, taking a sip of the water that had somehow found it's way in front of him.
"Then what did you come here for?" Sirius spoke, voicing the question we all wanted to ask.
Lucifer chuckled. "So many questions, are humans all so curious?" he asked us.
I opened my mouth to say something in exchange, but I couldn't even form a sentence. Weird, I thought, that never happens.
Leviathan cleared his throat. "So, are you going to explain whatever it is that you need to explain?"
"Yes, I suppose I should."
We all moved closer to the table, listening intently.
"So, I understand that you recently came back from Mizeareigh, right?" he asked, confirming what he though he knew.
"Yes. In fact, we only came here tonight, minutes before you arrived."
"Interesting. I believe you met Spectre then?"
Lykfilia and Leviathan sighed.
"That answers my question perfectly thank you. So, what color was her eye?"
"Which one?" Lykfilia asked.
"The white one obviously, do you know nothing about angels?"
"...you do realize none of us are actually angelic or heavenly, right?" Sirius told him quietly.
"Right. Sorry. I just assumed Leviathan knew, considering Mizeareigh's history."
Leviathan became confused. "What do you mean by that Dianthus?" he asked.
"Never mind that. The point is, if the blind eye was black then we're pretty much screwed, but if it was normal then we still might have a chance to change it."
There was an awkward silence, then Demyx spoke up. It was odd to hear him speak, as I hadn't gotten used to his presence yet, and he didn't say much anyways.
"One who knows nothing can understand nothing, what the hell's going on?"
"Were seriously none of you taught history as a child? This is basic stuff here!"
"Well, not all of us were interested in history," I started, gaining his attention. "And some of us were raised to fight, not become a philosopher."
"Again, Reyna has a point. We, with the exception of Reyna, don't know much about angels or angelic properties. So if you could explain, then that would be freaking perfect."
Lucifer turned to Demyx as if he was only noticing him now.
"Who and what on earth are you then, if not an angel and not a human?" he said curiously.
"Oh, uh, Demyx. Lynchfield. Ludevicus. Demyx Lynchfield." Poor Demyx could barely even get his name out.
"Come again?" Lucifer replied confusedly.
"Demyx Lynchfield. I am a human with demon anchestry and a demon form, but I was disowned by my family because I'm about as powerful as a mosquito in their eyes."
"Strange, I've never heard that name before."
"Well you see, I had to change my name after the third lecture of "You're a disgrace Demyx" and I kind of didn't want to die so I changed it to Lynchfield. "
"Aha. And you say this was what family?" Lucifer asked, half joking but he was kind of curious as of which family would even try this.
"Ludevicus." Demyx' reply came immediately.
Lucifer choked on his drink.
"Ludevicus you say."
"Yep."
"You're related to one of the swordsmen, did you know that?" Lucifer told him.
"I've been informed of that, yes."
"That is so cool!"
All of us tried our best not to laugh at him, and we barely succeeded. I understood how he felt though, those were my exact thoughts when I first came to this place.
"Lucifer, man, you're like a thousand years old, stop acting like a child." Leviathan said out of the blue.
"You can't tell me what to do. Anyways, the point is-"
"Spectre's the host of the moon demon isn't she? That's why you were asking about her eye." I said, casually interrupting him.
"Well, yeah. I'm surprised you figured that out on your own though."
I blushed at the compliment, or at least, I thought it was a compliment.
"Well, you were about to explain the warding in angel's eyes, right? I kind of felt this coming, I don't know how."
Lucifer's eye twitched slightly at my words.
"Are you sure you don't know?"
"Yes." I replied.
"Oh well then. For those of you who don't know, all races besides angels and Mizeareighean demons are born with what we call medicatus aspectu, or 'glamoured sight'. It means that if we cast the right enchantments, we can alter what you see depending on what we want or need you to in the moment. That's how we seem to change appearance from time to time, just like Leviathan doesn't always have horns and I don't always have pitch-black eyes. Or burn marks."
"So what you're saying is that we can't see what's really there?" Lykfilia asked him.
"Yes. Now, when an angel is cast from the City, they usually get their vision removed, turning them blind to all things non-human. This also breaks the warding spells we're naturally born with to prevent demonic possession or otherwise, meaning Spectre is easily susceptible to the moon demon, and that the demon will try to take over the mind and body. There are spells that allow us to re-seal the demon until we find a way to destroy it, but they only work if the host isn't too far gone. Understood?"
We all nodded. That's when it hit me, why did I see this tavern differently from the other humans that come here?
"But I can see this tavern just fine?" I started, slightly confused. "Yes, it's kind of dark and all, but it's ages old and didn't Leviathan say that it was half ruined when Lykfilia first came here?"
"Wait, it's dark? It's pretty bright and cheery to me." Sirius said and Lykfilia nodded in agreement.
Lucifer drew back from the table, standing up.
"Now that you say that, you have a strange aura to yourself, human. Mind if I do a little experiment?" he said, walking over to my side of the table. Once he arrived, he looked down at me, asking me to turn around to face him.
"Look me in the eyes Reyna Videns, tell me, what do you see in them?"
I locked my eyes to his, and shivered. It was like the whole tavern became cold just by looking into the demon's eyes. They were like pools of inky madness. No, that's an understatement. It was like staring into the void itself.
"I see only the darkness of your heart, Lucifer."
Where are these words coming from? This isn't me speaking...
"You're sad. You're lonely, longing for someone to be with, someone who can understand your sorrows."
What's going on, these aren't my thoughts!
Lucifer was the first to break eye contact. "Now look around you."
I suddenly noticed every single aura in this room. They were all different colors and glowed differently based on power. But I finally realized something. Leviathan was slightly taller and he'd changed a bit. He had fangs now, horns protruding from the top of his head. But the worst were his eyes. They were green yes, but the sclera was a pure black shade. I looked back at Lucifer, probably horrified. I could now see the scars and the large burn on his neck and jaw, creeping up underneath the eye.
"Why can I see this?" I asked, my voice shaky.
"It's you." he said, voice airy and borderline scared. "The clairvoyant child, the child with foresight, the other omen of the fourth war. You're the reincarnation of Eliza, member of Raziel's elite angels and the last person to have the gift of prophecy. You're the one that decides the outcome of this war."
