Nightmare

The work was too much, that damn hacker was so hard to find and my team was getting attacked every day, many of our bases and small companies around the country had been raided, or our contacts had been stolen. However, we didn't stop retaliating each time. They wanted a war, they got one. The Davis were going through a financial crisis and I have a hunch that my old man was also helping behind that, but nothing was confirmed yet.

I was so occupied with the problems of the organization that I left anything business-related to my CEO, Lucas Hunter, the one that was my brother's assistant once. Yep, that one.

Many years ago I helped him from the extortion and be free to have a bright future inside the company, but he decided to step out of Lark Co. However, my scum of a brother didn't let him go and called all his contacts to make his life quite a living hell, no one dared to hire him. What an asshole. Well, I gained from that, now Lucas is my CEO.

Lucas Hunter, CEO of EVE, a multinational IT company with hundreds of projects around the world. He was doing a pretty good job that I didn't need to think that much in anything business-related. Even his sister, the adorable Sofia, was working with us. Who could tell that she was a genius at managing a company like her brother? Thanks, Ian, you helped me so much.

Even with that much help from my lovely friends, I had so much in my hands. I won't allow any more threats. I spent so much time inside the office that many times I lost track of time, only when Maya and Liam called me from time to time I remembered to eat or do something else, but I had to do this or else my family would suffer. I hope they understand.

"Eve, what is going on with those Davis?"

"What is it, Lucas?"

"It is just that they are being more aggressive than ever."

"Don't worry, just keep going. Leave them to me."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, don't worry."

I had been keeping Lucas in the dark, he doesn't need to know about that little war we have. There is a load of work on his shoulders right now with the expansion, what would he need more trouble with?

"Liam?"

One night, I returned late to the mansion and I saw my dear Liam sitting on the couch of the living room. He looked different. I know I hadn't seen him for several nights, and I was feeling guilty, but…

"Liam, why are you awake?"

He didn't answer, he looked lost in thought.

"Liam?"

He moved his head and looked at me with vacant eyes, then a dangerous shadow I've never seen on him overwhelmed him. He was cold and indifferent. I felt so scared. He had never looked at me like that.

I walked to him and took his hand, however, he pulled it as if he felt disgusted at me.

"Liam?"

Then his usual eyes came back as if some minutes ago he didn't look at me as if he never knew me.

"Eve, when did you come back?"

"… a few minutes ago… darling, are you alright?"

"…"

"Liam?"

"Yes, just a nightmare. Let's go to bed."

"Yes."

Something is not right.

I hugged him tightly to sleep and him too. We didn't say anything, but I knew he was as scared as I was. I don't know which hour I slept, but my arms didn't want to let him go. I wanted to feel him near me.

Three consecutive nights passed, and he had been waking up in the middle of the night.

"Liam, we have to see a doctor, this is not right."

"…"

"Liam?"

"Just wait… a few days more."

"But…"

"Eve, please… I will be alright."

I was scared and concerned with his red eyes and weak complexion. It seemed as if he didn't want to sleep anymore, but he never told me about those dreams.

"Eve?"

"Yes…"

"That time… you didn't tell me everything about that day…"

His eyes looked at me as if he was expecting some kind of answer… some revelation.

"I… "

"Eve?"

"They are part of my organization, I've met them long ago but have to abandon them, they are not bad people but that time they asked me for help and I couldn't involve you or Mila, I didn't want to put you in danger. I am sorry, Liam."

I didn't say it. I am such a coward, how can I not tell him. Dammit! I couldn't look him in the eye, but somehow I knew he was disappointed.

That night, I felt him sleeping as usual, and he didn't wake up. He was calm and not frowning, but I knew he was dreaming as he kept mumbling something.

I didn't sleep but kept looking at him, watching his sleep, prepared to wake him up if anything happens, prepared to protect him. Then I touched his hand and he squeezed it and let go of a little smile. I felt blessed.

I don't know how many hours passed, and I felt tired, but he moved his head and another smile appeared on his face. I had to move closer to his mouth to hear what was he saying in between dreams.

"Liam, what are you dreaming of?"

I whispered to myself, trying not to wake him up. However, he mumbled clearer as answering my question.

"Mm… Rose."

I shouldn't have asked… I shouldn't…
