Morning Light

The moon rested high in the sky as the clock at Melinda's home chimed at the twelfth hour.

With time continuing its course, Melinda was able to move again. Quickly heading downstairs, she grabbed a bottle of water and then returned to the rooftop to examine the gem.

Placing the bottle to her lips, she drank hungrily to the thirst quenching effects of the bottled spring water. When the bottle was empty she then turned her attention to the green gem on the ground. Its smooth surface giving it a sleek shine even though there was no light coming from it.

Holding the gem in her hand, it felt cold to the touch and quite valuable. As she brought it closer to her eyes, it almost seemed like there was something within the gem.

"Fine, I am going to bed," her Father's voice boomed, cutting into her thoughts as she studied the gem.

Then she heard her Mother say "Melinda, remember that you have school tomorrow."

Placing the gem in her pocket, she headed downstairs. Her mom stood in the kitchen with a discontented look on her face.

As if to answer the question in her daughter's mind, she assured Melinda that her Father would change! It is a tale that Melinda has known for the nineteen years that she has been in existence.

This was a conversation that she and her mother have had before and it was one that Melinda did not want to have again. Changing the topic, she asked her mom if there was anything to eat?

"Well there is cooked food here..." Debbie, Melinda's mom looked at the mold accumulating on the food that resided in the pot. Startled, she wondered how did that happen.

Melinda watched as her mother brushed it off and looked to make a sandwich for her daughter.

It was clear that she had no idea what had happened and it doesn't make sense explaining it to her, Melinda thought to herself, not that she would understand anyway.

Melinda locked her bedroom door and then she sat on her bed. Placing the gem on her nightstand, she picked up the plate with the ham on rye sandwich that she had placed on the nightstand and took a bite out of it. In her heart, she knew that it would definitely not full her but it would have to do, she thought to herself. After eating the entire sandwich, she wished she had another as she put down the plate and picked up the glass of Mauby that she had also rest on the nightstand.

She drank slowly as she looked out the window, wondering how tomorrow would be.

'She needed to bathe and get ready for bed, she thought to herself!'

As she was about to rest the glass on the plate, to her astonishment resting on the plate was another sandwich.

She remember thinking about wanting another sandwich and here it was. Her attention suddenly turned to the gem that she had placed on the nightstand, next to the bed. Drinking the remainder of juice, she willed for more as she rest the glass on the nightstand. Right before her eyes, the glass started to refill as she stared at it.

'It had to be the gem, she thought that was causing this!'

Picking up the gem, she decided to put it to the test. Holding the gem in one hand she picked up a pencil in the other. Holding the gem, she threw the pencil as hard as she can to the furthest wall which caused it to break in two. As it was falling to the ground, she willed for it to be back in her hand.

Just before the two pieces touched the ground, it disappeared and she felt it in her hand. Looking down at her hand, she could see the entire pencil the way it was before she had cast it to the wall.

With a smile she said, tomorrow would be a good day! Then she prepared to go to the bathroom to bathe and turn in for the day.

In the morning she would have to visited her friend who makes jewelry and other accessories, she thought. Perhaps he could make something too encase it in. That way she could keep it with her at all times.
