feign
verb
pretend to be affected by (a feeling, state, or injury).
The bus was quiet. Celia's eyes were softly closed, breaths slowly escaping her lips. You had sat next to Sparty, eyeing him softly. The boy ran a hand through his hair, blowing out in a huff. The bus rolled forward, slowly. Lucky could tell Raven was having a hard time.
Everyone on the bus remained silent. As it began to spin around Lucky heard something run against the side. She squealed at the noise, Spartan's eyes watching the window. Lucky peered down and her eyes widened at the sight.
A girl with ragged hair, scrapped and sticking to her face. Her eyes blank white in colour and skin turning grey and blue. Blood seeped out of her wounds, including her armless left shoulder. Her right arm and hand banged against the bus. Her mouth moving in strange and horrid directions. Lucky could only imagine what noises it would be making.
Keeley screamed at the sight of it, Suzie came and almost barfed in the aisle of the bus.
"OMG! It's, like, bleeding from its face!"
She was right, there was a large chunk of flesh torn from its cheek and around the side of its head. Along with an ear, barely dangling by a thread of skin. Lucky could feel bile swirl around her stomach. Dear lord.
"Raven, put a step on it!" It was Harry. On the other side of the bus. Lucky sprung out of her seat and practically leapt over Sparty to see the window. She peered out and saw it. A group of monotoned blue figures, approaching the bus. Some heads barely standing on their own, some with opened stomachs and guts falling out. Falling to the ground. Okay, Lucky was seriously about to let go of her imagined lunch and breakfast.
She turned away from the window and screamed at Raven, "Drive!"
Raven pressed his foot down on the accelerator and the bus lurched forward, driving faster than it did. It sped out of the parking and down the road, Raven took a sharp right- or as sharp as he could get it, considering he may as well be driving a road train. They were heading in the same direction they had been travelling when they first arrived, only they turned off the road and into camp. Raven watched as the road dipped heading off the cliff face, which eased his nerves.
He looked in the mirror, he could see the figures of former classmates. Former human beings. Now filled in the shows by demons. The ones that people would see in a state of paralysis. It sent chills down his spine, the bus rambled, and its engine sent a distressed hum as it raced across the road.
Raven's hand trembled lightly against the steering wheel, his bottom lip quivering as his mind focused solely onto the road. He would curse every time the wheels would take an abrupt turn when hitting a sheet of ice or bumping on a large stick.
Raven's eyes were glassy, worse than a porcelain doll, his lips seemed frozen together and an anxious face was the only way he had any relief. His breath was stuck in his throat and the only way to tell if he was an actual human would be the curses he let fly whenever the bus hit something.
Celia gripped her chair, nails digging into the surface and almost penetrating through. Her eyes were wide, pupils shrinking like they had been dotted by a permanent marker. All screams escaped her at this point and there was nothing left to give. Celia's pupil swung to the side, starring at Bella.
The usual calm and rational female were a broken mess. She scratched the side of her neck, rubbing her shoulder blades- best she could under her winter gear. Bella has a small frown; her teeth being revealed from her lips. She squinted her eyes as she tried to make out camp from the bus's windows. She felt her stomach turn in knots, keeping her from swallowing or bile rising. She felt sick and anxiety coursed through her veins, her heart almost leaping out of her rib cage and to break free.
Lucky was still standing up front, her hands gripping the metal pole with all her might. She was breathing unlike her counterparts; however, her breaths were too quick to even register as air entering and leaving her lungs. Her pupils went round as dinner plates and her eyes may as well been a swimming pool. Tears rolling down her cheeks, she wasn't surprised that some of the other girls, even some of the boys, had tears shedding as well.
Lucky fell quiet, there were no words to say. No conversation to start. There was nothing anyone could speak or do to make the situation better. What was worse were the thoughts circling in Lucky's mind. The thoughts of her and her friends. Of her classmates. Of her teachers. But all that came up were negative feelings. Optimistic thoughts that didn't seem to make her feel any better.
Her father always taught her optimism could save the world. Optimism could keep you living another day. Optimism helped you so you could help others.
But now all optimism seemed to do was delay the inevitable. The feeling grew worse and worse, tight pain in her chest and a numbing feeling over her arms and legs.
She thought back; people had been murdered, mauled, killed. They had stolen equipment. Highjacked a bus and now were heading to civilisation. Were the police even going to believe them? How likely of a story would it be that an entire class survived a practical zombie outbreak at camp that somehow started with some monstered animal.
The chances of being believed were highly unlikely.
Where would that leave everyone? In jail, juvey? Under suspicion of murder and theft? The school would surely expel them all. If they had any dignity in themselves, imagine that- an entire year cohort returns from camp with crazy stories of death, murder, gore and strange animals that would only appear in your dreams.
Lucky gulped harshly.
They were going to pay for all of this. Lucky knew it to well, deep down in her bones. She felt guilt forming in her throat, why was she having such doubts? Surely, they'd be helped. They'd have to receive help.
Right?
They, they'd all believe them… right?
Lucky sucked in a deep breath. Alright, alright, time to slow down the carousel. She'd end up driving herself insane if she kept this act up. Lucky's eyes travelled out to the window, an outline of a city slowly becoming closer and closer. What surprised her was how quiet this road was, along with all the others. There seemed to be nothing.
No cops, no people, no civilians. Lucky felt her anxiety bubble inside of her. She gripped the metal pole tightly, her grip tightening- if her strength continued, she might as well bend it in her grasp. Lucky felt the bubble in her throat twist and grow bigger as her eyes took in what was around her.
Nothing.
Everything looked lifeless. Trees lost all of their leaves, their bark shrivelling to the point of no return. Flowers wilting and petals falling to the ground. Bushes losing their luscious and luxurious appearances and now turning into a tangled nightmare.
"Where is everyone?" Ella asked, crossing her arms.
"Everything looks so… dead" Lucky responded; Spartan came to her side. Looking out the window. Raven turned the bus off the road, coming to the side. He parked it to a stop. Looking out. Lucky walked forward. "Alright everyone… let's get off, have a look around. Get changed if you can be quick but be sure to try and find food and water if we can- our main goal is people" Lucky turned around, facing the people on the bus.
Celia stood up with Bella, reaching down for the floor hatch. She opened it with a soft grunt and looked down into the bus's bag compartment. She leaned down, a line forming behind her. She pulled out a bag.
"Danny!" she called out, a boy coming forward. He smiled as he took the bag in her hands. They started flooding out of the bus, searching through their belongings. One by one they were able to receive their things and began to gather supplied. Lucky found her jeggings; she double layered her socks before putting on her shoes. She threw on her sport jumper, threw on a bigger hoodie and then followed by her long jacket.
She looked up, following Bella and Celia.
"Do you want me to wait here to keep the bus prepared?"
"That might be best"
"I'll stay with ya" Harry nodded, grabbing a cricket bat from the bus's bottom compartment. He held it sturdily in his hands. Raven nodded.
"I'll go with the girls" Sparty said, following the three females down the stairs. The bus's doors remained open, Harry sitting on the stairs. He felt nervous about letting his friends go off on their own, but he'd feel worse with leaving Raven on his own.

Lucky's nerves were on edge as she walked. Her legs quivering with each step she took. Her small group of four had managed to come across a police precinct. Lucky turned to look at her friends, Bella shrugged and took charge. Looking both ways across the street- the way a child would do to show their parents that they were responsible, that they could cross a road on their own.
Celia followed, dragging Lucky by her wrist. Sparty took the rear, his emerald puppy eyes watching the horizon. Bella's jacket was unzipped, revealing her vest and hoodie beneath. Celia still having her parka, which was zipped all the way, her hood over her head.
The door swung open, the four teens working inside the precinct. Something was so off… if being dead silent wasn't bad enough. Lucky could feel the nerves growing in her bones. The screaming instinct to run away and not look back.
She turned to her friends, biting her lower lip.
"What do you think happened here?"
"…Maybe the same thing that happened at camp" Sparty breathed out, Celia's back turned to his own. Her light chocolate hues were wide, and fear filled. Celia felt her throat grow tight, cold and unknown to her.
Bella began shuffling, she found a remote to a TV, turning it on the news channel came to life. A city-wide panic, dangerous monsters lurking around. Murdering and turning humans to the dark side. Bella's eyes widened in fear and she stepped back. Turning to look at Lucky who remained silent.
She gulped quietly, watching the frazzled reporter trying her best to stay calm.
"There's nothing left here," Lucky breathed out, her hands resting on the desk next to her. Head leaning forward and patchy breaths escaping her. "We- we should see if we can find anything of use to us" Lucky licked her bottom lip, her fingers trembling- even against the brace of the support the desk provided her. She leaned her whole body forward, stifling any cries to escape her mouth.
"Luck, you good?" Sparty came to her side, hugging her gently. Lucky blinked rapidly, before nodding.
"Y-Yeah, let's just get out of here" she mumbled. Turning to the desks. Celia and Bella already finding bags and beginning to fill them with whatever they could find. Lucky took her own turn and found the stairs, running up them. Sparty deciding to follow. "You take this level and I'll go up" Lucky said as she turned to the wooden stairs leading up to another level. Sparty nodded, ducking to the left and beginning his search.
Something felt wrong as Lucky's feet hit the stairs. She could feel them creak and give out cries as she went further and further up. What was so bad up there? She didn't know. She poked her head out, seeing nothing.
She narrowed her eyes as she walked slowly steadily through the halls. She gulped and opened a door. She felt a pair of eyes on her. She turned quickly, looking around in fear. Could it be another monster? Well, Harry had her bat… damn it Harry! She kept going, steadier and slower this time.
Biting the inside of her cheek as she went, legs shaking and trembling that shook her to her core. She may as well be waving a white flag. She heard footsteps and she bolted forward, not daring to look back. She turned a sharp corner of a row of desks and heard something jump next to her and crash into her. Sending her to the floor. She screamed out, but it was cut short by something gripping her mouth.
A gloved hand that refused to let go. She squirmed around and froze as she something sharp come into her view. She was thrown around and the presence was upon her again, keeping her head down and a hand on her throat. There was no pressure, yet. But she could feel her fear intensify as she watched the person on top of her.
Orange goggles stared back at her, tilting their head to the side as they stared down. A smile on their face, though Lucky could see it was just the weird looking mask that covered the bottom half of their face.
She felt her eyes widen at the sight, did the people here go crazy so soon!?
"A-And here I th-thought everyone-ne in this town w-was dead" he chuckled, twitching and ticks interrupting his voice. He looked up as he heard footsteps, two people turning the corner. "Ch-Check it out guys! W-We've got a n-new friend!
"I thought everyone here was already gone?" one with a raspy smooth- if that were even possible, voice asked. Coming into Lucky's vision. She fumbled and tried to wriggle away, but the grip on her throat had tighten to a strangling point. She gasped and her hands flung to his wrist, digging in for him to remove it.
"I-I'll only removed it, s-sweetheart, i-if you be go-ood" Lucky's hands left his wrist, and his grip on her throat loosened. "G-Good girl,"
"If there's one there's bound to be more" a different voice added, deep and emotionless. Cold and callous.
Lucky couldn't really believe her ears; they were talking about her and her friends as if they were instincts! Like the saying people use when they see a cockroach, "oh, well, you know what they say. When there's one, there's bound to be more!" Lucky felt sickened by it.
"Master will be interested to know of this" a white mask came into her view, black painted lips and black eyes holes. They looked to be male from their sheer build and the tan jacket and white shirt he wore were stained and barely did anything to hide his build from the world.
"I-I think so t-to!"
"I'll scout the lower levels, Masky see if you and Toby can find something to tie her up with" a yellow hooded one came into her eyesight. Lucky felt herself being roughly pulled up, and held tightly, but the ticking male.
"Y-You got it, b-boss!"
"I think there was rope in one of the rooms" the masked man mumbled walking away, the tight grip of the ticking male didn't let go as Lucky was left there, with his arms around her. She found her eyes scanning every possible way out. She'd be able to get away, but she had to be quick and had to be cunning.
She gulped and she heard footsteps. The masked man came around into her view, holding a long and thick rope in his hands.
"I've only got enough to tie up either her hands or legs" the masked male said.
"G-Go the legs, she won't be a-able to run away then!"
The ticking man's grip changed as he tried to spin Lucky around, she looked around. She didn't see that hooded dude anywhere; she twisted and found her feet and leapt forward. Tackling the legs of the masked man to the ground. She tumbled and quickly scrambled onto her feet. Bolting around the corner, footsteps occurred through the air.
She turned her head and saw them gaining ground on her. She ran past a hall, and her eyes could see the yellow of something.
"Hoodie! She's getting away!" the white masked man's voice roared, and she heard another pair of footsteps add to the cacophonous noise that filled her ears. She quickly turned and started bouncing down the stairs, she leapt to the middle floor, turning the corner and she quickly began scrambling down the stairs, seeing Spartan.
"GO!"
Spartan began sprinting down the stairs, he shouted out.
"GUYS! GET OUT OF THE BUILDING!" he was first to the floor, Bella and Celia leaping at his scared face and then bolting as they saw the three men swiftly following. Bella and Celia ran out the door, Spartan next and Lucky not far behind. She turned her head and saw orange goggle's growing close and closer to her face.
He sent out his arm to grab her, and lucky felt him get a grip of her jacket. She let he arms fly back and her jacket left her body. She bolted forward; the cold began to bite at her worse now her thick topcoat had left her body.
"Nice going Toby!" a man's voice roared in anger.
"F-Fuck off!"
Lucky bolted across the road and up the stairs, running straight into a park. Her footsteps heavy against the ground and her muscles began to ache. She puffed heavily and watched Bella and Sparty split off, Celia still running forward. Lucky following.
The two females ducked behind a large wall and hedge and ran into a kid's playground. Celia put her foot in Lucky's hand and was given a large boost. The specific playground was a large wooden ship- or so that's what it represented.
Celia was sent straight over the top, Lucky jumping and grabbing the top. She pushed herself up and slowly was able to make it over. Lucky sank down, breathing heavily. She and Celia made eye contact.
"We need to get back to the bus!" Lucky whispered; Celia nodded.
"We need to make sure they aren't following us first" Celia responded quietly, the two female teen's words fell short as they heard a stick snap in the distance. Lucky clenched her jaw and turned her head, slowly raising, her eyes barely peaking over the edge, she saw something flash orange and she ducked immediately. Lucky shook her head violently and they both froze as they heard a voice.
"All right, sweets, why don't you both come out and make everything easier. Or we'll force you out by your hair" a dark voice chuckled menacingly.
