carcass
noun
the dead body of an animal.
Lucky sat quietly; she was in Spartan's lap. Mumbling things to him, she couldn't even understand what she was going on about. Spartan remained quiet, just letting Lucky ramble to him. He furrowed his brows as she kept going on and on. He sighed.
Closing his eyes. Leaning his head back and hearing the bus's engine rumble. When he opened his eyes, he saw Ella staring at him.
"What?"
"I need to talk with you" she said hastily. Spartan raised a brow, before he nodded. He gently picked up Lucky- who got the idea and sat up in her seat. Ella gripped Spartan's wrist and began dragging him down the hall.
She opened the door to the toilet and pushed Spartan inside. She swiftly followed and closed the door. Spartan felt confused and his brows raised as Ella turned around.
"What do you need to talk to me about?"
"Look, I know it's not my place, but, it might be best to stay away from Rabbit's Foot for a while"
"And why would that be?" Spartan crossed his arms, furrowing his brows. Ella leaned forward, cupping his cheek in her hand.
"Because I care about you and it's so obvious those men are after her, I don't want you getting hurt"
"Ella, tell me this" Spartan began, gently pulling her hand away. "What kind of friend would I be if I just left Lucky to deal with this on her own?"
"A smart one looking out for their own wellbeing" Ella's voice lost the sing-song tone it once had.
"I'd be one deserving of being left behind. Lucky's the kind of person to stand by you if you stand by her. Not like your friends who turn on other's as soon as it benefits them"
"They're like that, because they have to look after themselves! God, Spartan Thydion, it's like you wanna die!"
"No, I just want to be deserving to be Lucky's friend"
"Spartan Thydion, she means bad news! Those men obviously want her!"
"Well, then we're a package deal"
You are going to regret those words one day"
"Then I guess you can say "I told you so""
"You're too kind to her you know, you're naïve and you're going to get yourself killed"
"Oh, well" he responded before opening the door and closing it. Walking away and going back to Lucky. He sat down next to her sighing. His thoughts did wander away from him, were those men really after Lucky? Maybe her parents were in a deeper mess than he thought.
He remembered when it was raining, and Lucky was waiting out front of the school. Stuck in the rain. Spartan had walked next to her and the two stood awkwardly under the umbrella, it was her third day at the school and things seemed to be going okay for her. She didn't speak much but was enjoyable to hang out with.
He remembered the way the rain fell over her cheeks and dripped to the concrete below. Her hair was stuck to her face and her uniform soaked through. She mumbled a thank you before looking to the ground.
The thunder was loud. School had just ended, and all the students were rushing out the halls to get home. Spartan one of them. Raven and Celia caught the bus to their neighbourhood. Harry walking Bella home as they always did.
Spartan waved goodbye to Darcy as she got in her parent's car. The vehicle driving away, standing under his umbrella, Sparty felt the chilling wind batter through his blazer and knitted jumper. His green puppy eyes noticed a figure standing in the weather.
She was soaked through. Spartan could see it was the new girl, (Your name). She seemed lonely and sad. Sparty had tried to find her at lunchtimes but never could. He wanted to invite her to come sit with him and his friends.
Maybe he didn't search the library well enough. He bit his lower lip before shuffling over. Stopping the rain from falling over her. She sniffed, turning her head and looking at him. Sparty smiled and she turned away.
"I'm already soaked"
"Well, you'll get less soaked"
"My jumper will still get small"
"Not really, depends on how you let it dry"
The girl stifled a laugh and smile looking up at him. "I know nothing about laundry"
"Hey, neither do I. Just the other day I chucked my brothers white footie jersey in with my younger sisters tutu"
Then she stared at him and saw the goofy grin on his face. She felt her own smile grow. She chuckled. "So, what're you doing here so late?"
"Mum works pretty late at the hospital, she's gotta pick up my brother and younger sister, then me"
"They don't attend the school?"
"Lena will, but Mason wouldn't be caught dead in this place. His ex attends here, and they didn't end it well"
"Woah! A bit of information there" she replied but immediately closed her mouth at Spartan's confused look. She turned to the ground, embarrassed. Before Spartan started chuckling.
"He was kinda a douche. I know this place seems scary and everyone sounds and looks like they're out to get you, but you just gotta go with it one day at a time. If you want, there's a spot free at our table"
"Our?"
"Me and my friends. They'd be happy to welcome you; I think you'd all get along pretty well"
"I dunno" she mumbled. Spartan looked down at her, her dark navy skirt was drenched. Along with the red knitted jumper sitting on her body. The beige blazer that should've been on her body, might've been enough to keep her dry. Spartan's blazer had been keeping him dry, though he did have an umbrella.
"How's this; I'll come grab you tomorrow at lunch, you can sit with us for the day. Then decide if you wanna come back. Deal?"
She thought for a moment, before smiling. "Deal"
"So, what about you?" he asked. The girl looked down.
"Dad's usually late. There's always stuff that relates back to what Mum would do"
"Her job?"
"Yeah,"
"What'd she do?"
"I never really knew, just that. It was important, like a detective or investigator or something. She'd always work weird hours and Dad often stayed home to cook and clean. But after she… passed… Dad was able to start working full time. Though Mum's work always does harass us at times"
"That's gotta suck,"
"Yeah, it does. I suppose…"
A car came around the bend Spartan perking up. "That's my ride!... I'm Spartan by the way"
"(Your name), but my family calls me Lucky"
"Well, Lucky, I'll see you at the table tomorrow!"
"Yeah, I hope so"
With that, Sparty handed her his umbrella and darted into the car. She watched him leap in, giving a quick wave before it rolled off.
"Who was that?" his mother asked.
"A new girl at our school"
"Oh, what's her name?"
"(Your name)" he answered simply. Buckling his seat belt.
"Oooooh, you getting a girlfriend?"
"No, she just needs someone to help her get settled in. It's not easy switching high schools halfway through year eight"
"I'm proud of you, honey. It takes some dignity to step up"
"Mum, you make it sound like I decided to speak to the police about a murder"
"She looks pretty" Lena said simply, sitting back in her chair. Spartan looked at her before she added, "It'd be nice if you got her as a girlfriend"
"Lena!" Spartan and his mother snapped.
"What?"
Spartan looked down as Lucky rested her head on his shoulder. He turned his head and looked out the window. Sighing deeply. He mumbled something to himself as the bus grew to a stop. He looked up.
"Why'd we stop?" he asked. Raven slammed his hands on the wheel.
"There's a tree blocking the road-" Raven's voice cut out as he watched four figures stand on the road and begin walking towards them. "Guys," Raven stood up quickly.
"What?" Lucky asked coming to his side seeing the men and woman. She began to back away. "We need something to block the door!" she screamed back. Darcy ran to the hatch and opened it up, looking into the bags. She screamed as she went searching through.
"There's nothing but suitcases!" she screamed back.
"Raven drive backwards!" Lucky shouted. Raven turned and stared at her.
"I'm glad you're that confident in my abilities! Just like to say, I'm not going to start continuously driving backwards with this road train! There's no way for me to do a U-turn to correct ourselves afterwards!"
A loud bang rang out in the air and fired at the bus, purposely missing. Lucky screamed and ducked down. Raven following.
"Everyone, down!" Raven screamed. The teens in the bus fell to the floor jumping out of the way of the door. Loud banging occurred and three girls screamed, Celia whimpered as she gripped onto Bella's arm.
Darcy could see the man behind the glass. Banging harshly. Surely, they didn't know where the button was. She prayed to whatever god was there, that they didn't know where the button was-
She widened her eyes as the door opened. She backed away and Spartan grabbed Lucky, pulling her back with him. The man bounced up the stairs cheerily. Looking around the bus's atmosphere and to the teens on the floor. The Sins at the back of the bus and Lucky's group in front. Lucky felt her blood run cold as his eyes glazed onto her. She wanted to disappear.
"Y-You lot have caused quite a bit of trouble!"
Celia breathed out shakily, watching the man with wide eyes. She shrunk away as he began walking down the aisle. Bella getting out of his way as well. His hand stroked Lucky's head and she flinched heavily under his touch. He chuckled at this as he kept walking. Two men and the woman also came up the stairs, a gun in the yellow hooded man's hand.
He looked out amongst them all, fear, and tension building between them all. Lucky met the eyes of the white masked man and her face paled, she wanted to just disappear, vanish, and become nothing.
"Everyone, get up, now!" he growled out, everyone did as he said. None of them were stupid enough to disobey. Even though fear was blocking every reasonable action at this moment point and time. Lucky licked her lips as her legs shook. "I want you all walking out single file, run and I'll blow your brains out" he seethed. The white masked man and woman walked down the stairs. Spartan went forward, hands held out to his side as he walked. Lucky followed after him. Raven went next, Celia shaking as she followed. Darcy strayed away from the man as she bounded down the stairs, Bella stood up slowly.
"N-No, please"
"G-Get up and do it!" the goggled man growled. A crying Shavonne on the floor, Bella turned her head.
"If any of you want even a chance at surviving this, get your asses off the floor and walk!" she hissed. Turning back to the hooded man, her hands raising slowly. She turned around once more
"L-Listen to your f-friend. That i-is if you w-wanna live. I could k-kill you all right now" he chuckled, and Ivy could feel the tears falling down her face. Ella and Abigail stood up and began walking past Bella, down the stairs. Bella walked down the aisle; she heard the hooded man's gun raise.
"I said down the stairs" he said in a cold voice. Bella nodded.
"I-I know, I'm just going to get them to be more cooperative" she said softly, looking back at him. He remained silent before sighing.
"Hurry up,"
Bella hurried herself to them, gripping Shavonne's face and starring down at her. "Listen, closely. We're gonna stand up, we're gonna walk down the aisle and down the stairs and we'll do exactly as they say. Understand?"
"I-I don't want to-" Shavonne's voice cracked and Bella shook her head. Shaking herself, she had to hurry if she was going to keep them alive.
"You got to, look, I will hold your damn fucking hand if I have to, but we're doing this. Okay?" Shavonne remained quiet for a moment, before nodding. Bella breathed out and grabbed her wrist, pulling her up. The other girls huddled around her. "Single file you lot" she barked. Keeley took the lead. Mina behind her, Ivy following. Bella shoved Suzie in front of her the girl walking quickly and Bella walked after, dragging Shavonne with her.
"L-Look's like w-we've got a sh-sheep dog, Hoodie!"
"Hmph" he responded, watching the girls walk down the bus.
They made it down the stairs standing amongst the cold. They all remained quiet. Hoodie looked amongst them all. The four adults surrounded the children, Lucky looking around frantically, sinking in to Sparty.
"We need to bolt" she mumbled; Spartan blinked.
"We have to do it when they're distracted"
"What's the plan with this?" Celia asked quietly, she squeaked and sped away as the goggled man walked next to her, he smirked at this.
"P-Poor litt-tle mouse!"
Bella watched the men with an aggression she could only layer back with an iced calmness- a fake iced calmness. Her anxiety was being blow out of the water and she was on the verge of tears.
"Master never specified about how many he wanted alive, which means we could kill a few to make our lives easier" the hooded man watched them all, the teens shrinking into a tightly compacted crowd. Lucky gripped onto Sparty's sleeve. She felt a huge wave of paralysing fear wash over her. She could feel her legs shake.
She watched as Shavonne stepped away slightly, barely noticeable to anyone. Lucky and Bella could sense it. "Shavonne, don't" Bella mumbled, but the girl didn't listen she bolted. The hooded man turned and watched, attention all fell onto her and they raced after. Leaving a side open. The white masked man grabbed her, and the hooded man raised his gun as she was dragged back.
Ella's eyes widened as the gun was set off and Shavonne's body fell to the floor. Decorating the thin snow with red.
"RUN!" she screamed, bolting. Everyone bolted except a few. The hooded man cursed.
"I told you to watch the side!"
"S-Sorry!"
Lucky's group remained seated. Either stupid or frozen with fear. It seemed both were plausible causes. Lucky felt the hungry eyes watch them. They remained still until the hooded man growled out.
"Get on the bus!"
"Y-Yes sir!" they all shouted scurrying away, onto the bus without hesitation. The white masked man stood at the door, guarding it as the other three bolted off after the small group. Lucky watched the back of his head.
He turned and looked at her, Lucky's eyes widening and spinning away. Hugging herself. He turned his head back around and looked out to the snowy plains. Soft mumbling occurred throughout the group.
"We could try opening the top hatch?"
"What about the luggage one?"
"Is it even possible to open the side door from the inside?"
"Maybe?"
"You can! One time I fell in and was stuck until I managed to bang it open, all the doors are loose. It just takes a big enough whack to have em' fall open"
"Okay, so… what if I tried to close the doors and you guys get out through the hatch?"
"What about you?" Spartan asked, Lucky pursed her lips.
"Open up the bottom hatch, I might be able to slip through if I'm lucky"
"No," Raven said sternly, Lucky pursed her lips.
"It's our only shot"
"We can't leave you!"
"You got to!"
"Lucky, we can't leave you behind" Celia piped in, gripping her arm.
"You guys need to get out. Giving one life to save a bunch of others, sounds pretty noble to me"
Bella smacked Lucky's arm.
"Don't even joke about it (Your name)"
"Good thing I'm not" Lucky shot up and bolted to the console. The white masked man turned his head and saw the doors closing. He shot out his hands blocking them. Lucky leapt down the stairs and sent her boot straight to his face. He fell back and the doors shut. She barricaded them with her hands and breathed out shakily. Harry grabbed a bunch of the backpacks they had leaving Lucky's alone. Raven grumbled before jumping onto the chairs.
He pushed the hatch open and pulled himself out, he could hear the aggressive shouting of the masked man. To focused on Lucky than the escaping teens. Harry opened up the bottom hatch and then picked up Celia. Practically chucking her to Raven, who pulled her out with ease. From there, Harry went next. Swiftly followed by Bella and then Darcy was out.
"Guys hurry! I can't keep this door shut for much longer!" Lucky cried out. The man began trying to pry the door open himself. Lucky whimpered as the door slowly opened before closing once more.
Spartan hurried out of the hatch, taking one last look at Lucky. At once they all dropped to the other side of the bus. Celia crying out as she landed. The man stopped and turned his head. Lucky's eyes widened.
Raven grabbed Celia's wrist and they began bolting into the forest. The masked man ran from the door and Lucky took the chance to scramble to the bottom hatch. She dropped through and closed the door- not before she grabbed her own backpack. She sat in the darkness. She heard the bus's door open and then footsteps resonate throughout.
"Wh-Where are you Littl-le Clover?"
Lucky's eyes widened at the name. How the hell? She felt herself gulp. She remained quiet.
"Lucky Clover, come out, come out" it was the hooded man's voice. Singing silently. She could hear the aggression silently laced throughout. She slowly dragged herself towards the side door. She prayed to god Harry was right about the door.
"I have to admit, Lucky Charm, you've got a kick on you" it was the white masked man. She froze as she heard the hatch slowly open.
Lucky rolled to her side and to the side door. She sent her leg against it. It cracked. She sent another. It was slowly opening. She needed to hurry as the hatch was being ripped open and footsteps were thundering throughout the night. She kicked it once more and the door opened, and she tumbled out. Landing on her stomach.
Lucky gasped for air as she looked up. She could see the white masked man looking at her. Lucky got up and scrambled away. A gun shot echoed, but Lucky didn't stop. With her backpack in her hands, she bolted through the forest. Footsteps echoing behind her. She coughed loudly and didn't dare stop.
She turned her head and began to see hordes of the creatures. Lucky's eyes widened as she began bolting faster. They easily noticed her and began their chase. Lucky suppressed the scream rising in her throat as she ran. She could hear gun shots and the cracking of bones.
Lucky panted as she ran, tripping over a tree root and tumbling forward. She screamed out as she landed on her ankle. She gripped it harshly, clenching her jaw. She looked down, swelling occurred and she could see the bruise littering it.
She'd be surprised if she didn't at least sprain it. She stood up slowly and began her limping towards the tree barrier. As she broke through, she saw a town, littered in barbed wire. She looked up in wide eyes. This was it.
She found a gap between the last wire on the fence and the ground, big enough for her. She threw her backpack over and began to slip under it. Slowly, she could sense the barbs trying reach out and snag at her clothes. She breathed out as she made it through.
Slowly limping forward. Gripping her backpack and throwing it on her back. She tried her best to pick up her pace and make it into the town. She could see the sun setting and danger still loomed over her body. She turned and saw a simple house, like one of those rentals that was just copy and pasted in an area. Given different colours but the exact same style and structure. She picked a random one and opened the door.
The house was a mess. But there seemed to be good enough things for her to use. She closed the door and locked it. The windows were already barricaded with wood. She puled a big desk against the front door. And an armchair against the garage door. She pushed the large wooden dining table- with some struggle, against the glass sliding door. Though the backyard was fully covered with a strong wooden fence, she wasn't taking any chances.
Lucky backed away from her work. Walking into the kitchen and sliding down one of the cabinets, throwing her bag in front of her. She probably should go explore. But she'd do that later. Right now, her ankle was killing her.
