Sanctuary

A couple minutes later I stood in the little attic, shaking my head. Nathanial had led me through the house to a little door inside the pantry of the kitchen and given me a key that unlocked it. Opening it revealed a very narrow set of stairs up to this tiny attic room in the roof of the house. There was a mattress in the corner covered in a thick duvet and pillows that took up most of the floor space. A plump chair at its end that faced the window, with a little table next to it. Another narrow door led into a tiny bathroom with just a toilet and sink. And I stood in front of a large window that filled one end wall and appeared to be the only light source in the room.

It was gorgeous. And if I was right, it was going to give me a chance to be finally, gloriously alone. I turned to face Nathanial and knew I was beaming, because he got that smug smile. "How?" was all I asked.
