"Alpha Lucas will come around again, don't worry. He would die before neglecting you," Ashley consoled, patting her palm on my shoulder.
Alpha Lucas didn't speak to me after today's incident nor he tried to contact me. I had waited for him and even missed my dinner in dread, he must've felt betrayed by me which gave away the reason why he wouldn't pick any of my calls.
I admitted the connection between us wasn't strong, we barely treated each other as friends, but the guilt in me for making the sadness flood in his honey eyes was bothering me. It bothered me a lot.
Ashley noticed my tension when I was sitting alone in the kitchen and had brought me to my room to talk it out with her. Skylar knew about this already the moment I stepped into her room. She told me to take rest but nothing seemed to calm me.
"He probably wouldn't want to talk to me again," I bit my lip, staring down at the bed I was sitting.
"Not even if the world is to end." Ashley folded her arms, staring confidently at me.
I sighed. "I don't know."
"Heaven!" My name boomed against the empty corridors of the packhouse and the hurrying footsteps approaching my room door. Our heads swiftly turned around expecting Skylar to barge in, no matter how worse her voice changed I would guess it easily even with the less hearing.
"Heaven!" Skylar barged inside my room as expected, she bent down getting back her breaths with her palms in her knees.
"What's wrong?"
"I j-just–" Pant. "Saw Alpha Lucas–" Another pant. "With my mate. They both were heading–" Another one. "To the forest."
Ashley frowned. "So? What's so new about it?"
I raised my brows, expecting an answer as well. She took long breaths and said, "Alpha Lucas must've called my mate, I'm damn sure he wants to share it with my math about Heaven."
She pointed her gaze at me.
"Me?" I asked, holding my forefinger in my own direction.
She nodded. "By the way my mate looked, I don't think your mate is taking everything well. Your meeting with Michael had disturbed him a lot and that's why my mate had decided to meet him near the cliff. Do you remember the place? The one which Alpha Lucas showed you another day?"
I nodded, refreshing the very memory of today during lunch. "I remember, so what if they are meeting. They are friends. Friends are meant to exchange their secrets and feelings."
"No." She shook her head. "Alpha Lucas was devastated when I saw him. Right now come with me, let's go hear what they will talk about."
"Obviously, he'll talk about today's scene," I muttered with a sigh.
I looked at Ashley, she smirked at the both of us. "You should probably go. You should hear about how he feels and how hard it was for him, that way your explanation will go easier."
"It's not like I did anything wrong," I defended myself.
Skylar rolled her eyes at me. "You fool! At least know how bad he feels."
I shook my head. "It's a bad idea. We should give him some privacy and I know he feels really bad about it, no need to eavesdrop on them."
"Heaven—"
I cut her off. "I'll go and see him tomorrow. I'll explain everything to him."
Skylar sighed. "You leave me no option, you should grab the opportunity and follow him."
She took a transparent small horizontal oval bottle from one of the inside pockets of her light brown buttoned coat which appeared like a perfume bottle. She looked at me and opened the cap of the bottle, she leaned forward and sprayed it on me once.
"What are you doing?" I asked dumbfounded. She instantly grabbed my hand giving me no choice and pulled me with her out of my room.
"Ashley are you on with us?" Skylar asked before she could cross the threshold.
Ashley stretched her hands. "It's almost time to sleep. I'll meet you guys tomorrow."
Skylar nodded, determination to set on the mission we never planned. Hell, I didn't even agree on it. I mean, I was still so shocked to grasp anything she was doing. All I knew was that she was dragging me with her to see and hear how Alpha Lucas was feeling about the whole Michael incident. Is she crazy? It's not even necessary to disturb his privacy.
I acknowledge that I was desperate to see him and explain everything he misheard and judged, but I have a good conscience to say what is wrong or right. He hadn't contacted him, texted or even tried to look at me after the incident, I was worried but I couldn't do anything until he moved his muscle to hear me out.
It was dark outside.
Of course, it would be since it's almost time for people to sleep.
Everything in the forest looked so dark and scary, I wondered how brave these wolves were to live here. The moon did stream its way in, but the fact only added more creeps than consoling a person. Skylar's hand tightened around mine as we carefully stepped over small twigs and dry leaves.
"Be careful."
Skylar half-turned to me and whispered, "This forest is ours, don't worry."
Skylar led us again. I hoped she knew where we were going, the dark woods were scary, it looked more dangerous than what I saw in movies. I turned back making sure that no popped behind me like all those movies.
I clung onto Skylar's arm, my body shivering from more cold than fear.
Skylar's voice brought me back to my world. "I found them."
She looked back at me, I gazed through the leaves of medium bushy plants and it indeed was the place that Alpha Lucas brought me the other day. The sounds of the waves at distant were the only proof of the darkness.
I leaned forward to catch on where they were going on about the topic, the sole reason why Skylar dragged me all the way here.
"—I think she's going to leave me." That voice–that voice could never be misheard by me like Skylar. His voice was heavy with the words, almost on the verge to break down
Jace wrapped his hand around his shoulder. "No. You are wrong. Heaven could never do that no matter how much she likes him."
Skylar and I exchanged glances in that. She whispered to me, "Damn! He thinks you like Michael."
I bit my thumbnail, the habit which not so often I do unknowingly. "Tch."
"T-that guy told her to run away with him. What do you think it means?' Lucas asked. But he went on to answer himself, "She doesn't like me, she wants to run away with him. She doesn't want to stay with me! She doesn't love me!"
I flinched at his sudden raised tone.
"It's not like that," Jace calmly explained. "You must be misunderstanding the whole situation. Heaven would never agree to live with us if that guy had her back."
Alpha Lucas grabbed his head as if it would explode any minute. "She will leave me, everything will be over. She will bring death to us, my own mate will be my ruin. I cannot live without her, she cannot leave me."
My eyes widened, he acted like a mad person, chanting every sentence like a mantra.
"It's not like that—"
Alpha Lucas beat him in. "She even left me on the full-moon day, she didn't seem interested in me at all. Her feelings are only pushed by mate bond, she doesn't find me likeable. I want to give her the freedom she longs for, but I can't deny what misery that will bring on us if she leaves us. She will die if she rejects me."
Lucas sniffed, burying his face in his palms. Every beat of my heart longed to go and slap him tight across his face.
He wasn't likeable.
Who in the world was he fooling? How could he even think I would be that heartless to bring misery on him and his pack. I realised that according to him I wasn't as 'understanding' as he was, but I had no intention to bring death to any one of his people. I did say that I would try, I told him I would try to like and move a step closer to him. I was uncomfortable even after the sparks things, I was never in any sort of physical relationship with any guy and because of that, I told him to wait.
And what did he say?
Did I neglect him for Michael?
Can someone splash a good amount of water on him? Jerk.
I turned around following back the way we came from.
"Hey! Where are you going? They aren't done yet," Skylar whispered-yelled at me, glancing ones at them then following me.
The darkness wasn't scary anymore because of how angry I felt towards it.
He didn't see how I behaved around him today. If I were so into Michael why would I run like a chimpanzee to find him, I looked like a madwoman searching for him. He didn't see that but he saw what Michael told me. I mean even if he said that didn't he see the unbelievable look I passed him. No, he didn't care about that but he cared what the dumb guy said.
I exchanged 'see you later' with Skylar as I climbed up the stairs, only seeking to hit my fluffy bed more than anything.
That guy surely knows how to get on one's nerves.
