CHAPTER 27: Thanks, Gabe

Soon, the next lesson began.

Ms Lee continued from where she left off.

"For example, you wish to conduct a simple laboratory experiment to investigate the average increase in the speed of a free-falling ball bearing with each second that passes. The quantities, d metres and t seconds, are not linearly related as demonstrated by the experimental data obtained. This can be seen from this table."

Togon let his eyes wander around the classroom, not understanding anything the teacher was saying. He shouldn't have insisted on coming to this boring place. He glanced over to see how Gabe was faring.

She was resting her chin in her hand, and tapping a rhythm on the table with her other. Her silky black hair was blowing in the breeze, brushing across her smooth, flawless skin. She pushed her hair behind her ear. Togon noticed that her ears were tilted backwards slightly, and he remembered from his face reading lessons back in the palace that people with tilted ears will be very rigid and tend to control others. Haha, this was especially true for Gabe, who always wants everything her way.

Ms Lee droned on in the background. "Let's see if all of you can grasp the concept of linear law. Can anyone briefly explain what the linear law is?" She turned to Togon, "Why don't we let our new student try?"

"Huh?" Togon snapped out of his reverie when he noticed Ms Lee staring at him. He had not heard a word of the question. Even if he had, he probably would not understand a word either. He turned to his table partner, Crystal, for help.

"She asked you to explain the linear law," Crystal whispered.

"I don't know how," Togon whispered back.

Crystal shrugged. "I'm not sure if my answer is correct too. Just say the first thing that comes to your head."

Ms Lee was still waiting for an answer. "It's okay if your answer is wrong. At least try to answer the question," She said impatiently.

Why was everyone telling him to try? He didn't know anything about the subject. He didn't even have an answer. So what could he say? That maybe the linear law thingy is about noodles and politics?

"Umm... err..." Togon racked his brains to think of something that was at least decent. He twiddled his fingers nervously and bounced his leg up and down. Everyone was staring. Everyone was waiting. He had to do something!

Gabe suddenly spoke up, "Linear Law describes a linear relation between two variables, say, X and Y . When X and Y and are in a linear relation , they are defined by the linear equation Y = mX + C."

Max was surprised. Gabe never answered questions in class voluntarily. Why was she suddenly doing just that?

"I wasn't asking you. I was asking Togon." Ms Lee pointed out.

"Yes... that's... that's what I was going to say too. Umm... linear relation between two variables... right?" Togon repeated Gabe's explanation nervously.

Ms Lee sighed, knowing better than that. "That is correct, although I highly doubt that you had the same answer as Gabe. Well then, never mind that, I suppose we should move on to the next part of our lesson now."

Togon heaved a sigh of relief, relaxing into his seat thankfully. If it wasn't for Gabe...
