Chapter 4: And There He Was

Abe and I sat silently in his black F-350 as we headed towards my home. I didn't tell him where I lived, so how he knew was beyond me. I left myself a mental note as that being something, I would have to bring up to him some other time. I just wanted to get home.

I stared out the window, only glancing at Abe a few times. Each time I did, he was looking at me out of the corner of his eye and I quickly looked away again. This car ride was ranked 1st on my 1st on my list of awkward car rides, and I've had plenty. Normally, they were dates that I wasn't really clicking with, so I tossed conversation with them out the window. This time it was different. I may not have known the man sitting beside me, but I wanted him to want me deep down. Rosa wanted him, that was a known fact. She kept pushing at my mind telling me, my mate, my mate, my mate. I honestly didn't need the reminder, so I kept ignoring her.

Abe finally broke the silence. "So, I was wondering…" He drifted off, considering if he should continue.

"You were wondering what?" I prompted. I was genuinely curious as to where he was going to go with this.

He sighed and glanced over at me with his crystal, blue eyes before looking back at the road. "I was wondering if I could take you out sometime?" He continued even after noticing that I froze. "Only if you're comfortable with that. I don't want it to seem that I'm pushing you into something you don't want." Abe watched me, wanting to see my reaction before he said, "Our wolves want one another. I have felt them howling and yelling at each other since I saw you walking across that street. I know if my wolf would be happy, that I would be too. I just want you to know that I want you to do whatever you feel happy with, not just because you feel guilted into doing it." He finished and looked back at the road.

I was surprised. I've been on plenty of dates, but I knew this one would push me towards staying here. I did not want that. I closed my eyes for a second, considering my options. Abe had just pulled his truck into the driveway. Of course, there was no one home. "There is a lot of things going on in my life that I've been considering for a while…" I considered my next choice of words. "But I will give you a chance. You, as well as our wolves, deserve that much."

He grinned, ecstatic at my words. He reached over and grabbed my hand. "You have no idea how happy that makes. I'll prove to you that I'm worth it, I promise."

I smiled back at him. There was no doubt in my mind that he could do just that. "I'd like that."

I went to open the door, but he still had a hold of my hand and he pulled me back, closing the door again. "I think I need your number so we can get something set up." He gave me one of his genuine smiles and asked for my phone. I reluctantly pulled it out of my pants pocket and handed it to him. He entered his number and I entered mine in his. "Thank you, Nova. I will be getting a hold of you soon."

I muttered you're welcome before I removed my hand from his and opened the truck door. I grabbed my bag and closed it. I stood and waved as he drove away before I walked up to my front door and unlocked it with my key. I walked in and set my school bag down, noticing how quiet and lonely I was all over again. I sighed and walked to the kitchen to prepare something for me to eat. I realized then that I hadn't ate since breakfast the morning before.

Just as I was about to sit down and eat my oatmeal, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out. I'm glad we met when we did, although I wish it were under better circumstances. I can't wait to get to know my mate better. Abe.

I smiled at my phone. I didn't reply, telling myself that I would later.

I finished my supper and went and laid down on the couch. There wasn't much on TV, so I settled for Grey's Anatomy. It wasn't long before I started drifting off from lack of sleep. I feel asleep thinking about Abe and how great he really was. I didn't even realize that I hadn't responded to Abe until it was too late.
