.03 | The Night of the Comet

I wake up to the pillow to my face and my tears dried to my face. I take out my journal from under my pillow, I think I'm going to start doing this often.

'Dear Diary,

Today I don't regret anything I said last night, it may have been harsh but it's what I think everyday, "I should have died at that bridge." Don't get me wrong I wish I didn't think about it, but every time I think something related to my parents the phrase is always brought up.

Today is going to be different, I'm going to try not to think about the phrase I keep asking myself, I'm only going to think happy thoughts, today is going to be great and that's one thought that is good.

S.'

I close my journal and put it back under my pillow and start to get ready for school. I put on a black bra type crop top and black overall shorts. When I was ready I walked out of my room as I walk towards the stairs I see Aunt Jenna in a blue dress talking to Elena who was in a long sleeved blue shirt and jeans, I walk up to their conversation.

"Do I look adult? Like in a respectfully parental." she asks Elena and I.

"Depends. Where are you going?" I ask shrugging.

"Jeremy's parent teacher conference. Hair up or down?" she asks walking over to the mirror. She pulls her hair up and looks at the both of us.

"Sexy stewardess." Elena and I both say in sync. Jenna let's it down. "Housewife." we both say together.

"Up it is then." she say pulling it back up.

"You're both feisty today." Jenna says.

"I feel good which is rare, so I decided to go with the fly free, walk on the sunshine and stuff." Elena says. I agree with her except I'm going with the good vibes. Elena walks over and checks Jeremy's room.

"Where is Jeremy?" Elena asks. I look at Jenna.

"He left early something about getting to wood shop early and finishing a birdhouse." Elena and I both look at Jenna weirdly through the mirror. Then she finally realized.

"There is not woodshop, is there?" she asked.

"No." Elena and I both said in sync again. Jenna then looks at us weirdly.

"I swear everytime I look at you both and you say things in sync, I feel like you are somehow related." I laugh.

"That's not possible." I say. Elena agrees. Before Jenna could say anything else we went downstairs and out the door.

"Originally discovered nearly five centuries ago, it hasn't been over Mystic Falls in over 145 years. Now the comet will be it's brightest right after dusk during tomorrow's celebration." he stops in front of Elena and Stefan.

"Are we bothering you Mr. Salvatore? Ms. Gilbert?" Mr. Tanner asked.

Before he could go any further the bell rang and the class was dismissed. Brian and I walked together hand and hand down the hallway just talking about our daily lives as usual. We can be a fun couple it's just sometimes we like to be casual. We were outside walking together when I noticed Matt and Elena talking. Brian and I decided to go ask how Vicki was doing.

"Hey Matt." I say once we get closer. He turns around and smiles. "How's Vicki?" I ask.

"I was just going to explain to Elena that they are keeping her overnight to see if there's an infection, but she should come home tomorrow." he said.

"That's good news." Elena said. I smile, I miss Matt and Elena being together, especially when Brian and Matt being friends, we would always go out together, Matt would always call us the best couples.

"Did you get in touch with your mom?" I ask.

"I called and left a message." Matt said. "She's at the beach with her boyfriend, so we'll see how long it takes her to come rushing home."

"I just hope they catch the animal that attacked her." Brian says.

"Yeah I heard there was some talk of some missing campers." Matt says.

"Did she say what attacked her?" I asked wanting to get to the bottom of this.

"She said it was a vampire." Matt tells us and Brian chuckles.

"What?" Elena and I both say together again for the sixth time today. I look at her and she looks at me, is she finally realizing or am I dreaming that we are saying things together in sync?

"Yeah, she woke up last night and muttered vampire then passes out." Matt says a little freaked out.

"That's a little weird." Brian says.

"I think she was drunk." Matt says then changes the subject. "So what's up with you and the new guy?" Matt asks glancing at Stefan who is sitting on the bench with his back faced at us.

"Matt the last thing I want to do it hurt you." Elena says softly.

"You know, I'm actually gonna get back to the hospital. I want to be there when Vicki wakes up. Get the real story about last night." Matt says.

"Okay." Elena whispers. Matt gives a sad look then walks away. I look at Elena.

"Elena I love you as if you were my sister and I believe in your decisions and don't want to get in between you love life, but you tell Matt you need time then you go and start dating someone right after him. Don't get me wrong Stefan is a really great guy for you, but seriously." I say.

"I know Soph." she says. I look back up at Brian before we walk away and back inside the school.

After the final bell Caroline dragged Elena and I to the Grill even though I was tired and had lots of homework to do, so I did my homework at the Grill.

"Well, I was talking to Grams and she said the comet was a sign of impending doom." I stop doing my homework and look up at Bonnie. "The last time it passed over Mystic Falls there was lots of deaths and so much blood and carnage, it created a bed of paranormal activity."

"Hmm...yeah, then you poured your Grams another shot and she told you about the aliens." Caroline says rudely. What is up with her today? Bonnie glares at Caroline then looks back down at the table. "So then what?" Caroline asks Elena.

"Then nothing." Elena shrugged.

"You and Stefan talked all night. There was no sloppy first kiss or touchy feeling of any kind?" Caroline asks.

"Wait Stefan was in the house last night?" I ask Elena. Elena gives me a small smile, then turns to Caroline to answer her question.

"No we didn't go there." she says.

"Not even a handshake. I mean Elena we are friends okay. You are suppose to share the moment with us." Caroline says. I roll my eyes in disgust. I can't believe Stefan was in the house last night and I wasn't the first to know or why I didn't hear them talking at all?

"We just talked for hours." Elena shrugs.

"What is with the blockage? Just jump his bones already." Caroline says in an annoyed tone. Bonnie and I chuckle. I look back at my homework and start writing. "Okay it's easy. Boy likes girl, girl likes boy. Sex." Caroline smirks. I shake my head and roll my eyes as I continue with my work.

"Profound." I tell Caroline. She chuckles and looks down at the ground. Elena turns to her side and starts grabbing stuff off the chair.

"Where are you going?" Bonnie asks.

"Caroline is right, it's easy, if I just sit here long enough I will end up talking myself out of it. Instead of doing what I started the day saying I was gonna do." Elena smiles. "Alright Soph, let's go." Elena says.

I look from Elena to Bonnie and Caroline to my homework and back at Elena. I softly sigh and start putting my things back in my bag and follow Elena.

I look up at the Salvatore house in surprise. This house may be the biggest house in Mystic Falls, besides the Mayor's. Elena and I walk up to the front door there was no doorbell, there was a rope that you pull down and wind chimes rang. Elena pulled down the rope then we waited for someone to answer. I go to knock on the door but just when I touched it, it opened. I look back at Elena and she shrugs, I open the door wider and start to walk in with Elena behind me.

We entered the hall, Elena looking one way and I the other, we didn't see anything.

"Stefan?" Elena calls out. We walk a little more into the house, my eyes go wide when I see the decorations. They are all old fashioned, some of this stuff goes back in the 1800's maybe even 1700's.

"Wow this architect is amazing." I say. We then hear a noise behind us and we turn around facing the front door. We walk towards the door and suddenly a crow flies in, we turn around to see where it went, when we come face to face with a guy, he was about a half an inch to my face. He tilts his head and looks at us curiously.

"We're sorry for barging in, the door was..." Elena trails off as she turns around to see the door was closed, "Open." she says confused.

"You must be Elena." he says staring at her. Then he looks at me with a smile. "You must be Sophia." he says. I wanted to correct him and tell him that my name is Sophie, but I let it go.

"I'm Damon, Stefan's brother." he said smiling.

"Stefan didn't tell me he had a brother." Elena says suspiciously.

"Well Stefan is not one to brag." Damon says quickly. I roll my eyes.

"Please come." he says gesturing us to come in further. We enter the living room which was filled with all old things, I would live here if I could. "I'm sure Stefan will be along any second." Damon continued. I stay quiet and look closely at a lot of the old things in the room.

"So this is the living room?" I ask looking back at Damon.

"Living room, parlor, seventies auction. It's a little catchy for my taste." he said. I squint my eyes a little then go back to what I was doing.

"I see why my brother is so smitten." Damon says looking at Elena, "It's about time, for a while there I never thought he would get over the last one." Damon says. I stop and look up at Damon and Elena. What is he saying? "Nearly destroyed him." he says sadly. Why is he saying this to Elena? Stefan could have told her when he was ready to.

"The last one?" Elena questions.

"Yeah, Katherine. His girlfriend?" Damon says. Elena shakes her head.

"Oh, you two haven't had the awkward 'ex' conversation yet." Damon states.

"Nope." Elena answers.

"Oops, well I'm sure it will come up now." Damon says shrugging.

"As if." I say crossing my arms glaring at Damon. I get it, he's jealous of Stefan so he's trying to ruin their relationship together so he can't have her, I'm not that dumb, I know what he's doing.

"Or maybe he didn't tell you because he didn't want you to think he was on the rebound. We all know how those relationships end." Damon says staring at me.

"You say it like every relationship is doomed to end." I say staring back at him.

"I'm a fatalist." he told me. It was like a staring contest. "Hello Stefan." Damon says without even turning his back. It wasn't until he said his brother's name that I blinked. I drop my arms to my sides.

"Elena. Sophie. I didn't know you were coming over." Stefan says without emotion.

"I know we should have called I just—"

"Oh don't be silly. You're welcome anytime. Aren't they Stefan?" Damon asks cutting Elena off.

"You know I should break out the family photo albums or maybe some home videos, but I have to warn you he wasn't always such a looker." Damon says. Elena and I chuckle as I silently walked up next to Elena.

"Thank you for stopping by, it was nice to see you." Stefan says not breaking eye contact with Damon. I honestly don't even think he looked at us.

"Yeah we should probably go." Elena says. We both turned to Damon.

"It was nice meeting you... Damon." Elena and I both say in sync, again. We both look at each other then quickly look back at Damon. He takes Elena's hand and kisses it.

"Great meeting you." he says with a smile as if he didn't see what just happened. He turned to me as I was going to walk away, but he quickly grabbed my hand and kissed it.

"Great meeting you, Sophia." he said smirking. I roll my eyes and make him let go of my hand and walk away, he said my name wrong even when Stefan said it right and he heard him. I let it go the first time, but this time not so much. I almost bump into Elena as she is standing there waiting for Stefan to move.

"Stefan?" she asks. He still had his eyes on his brother, it was like he went deaf for a while, "Stefan?" she says a bit softer, but louder. He finally notices that we are here and moves to the side so we could get through and we hurry out the door.

Elena and I were helping Jenna cook dinner and we were talking about the Salvatore's.

"He's on the rebound and has raging family issues." Elena tells Jenna as she chops up lettuce.

"Well at least it's an ex-girlfriend. Wait till you date a guy with mommy issues, or cheating issues, or amphetamine issues." Jenna says eating her apple. I laugh and we all look towards the door and see Jeremy walk in with his black hoodie over his head.

"Jeremy." Jenna says. Jeremy notices us and quickly runs upstairs. "Jeremy. Where were you?" Jenna asks running after him. Our family definitely has issues.

"More stoner stories. Look, Jenna, I get it you were cool and that's- so cool." I hear Jeremy say. I laugh and look at Elena who was looking at Jenna.

"Oh, no, no, no!" I hear Jenna yell at him, then a thud, she must've thrown her apple at him.

"Ow! Why, why- why did you do that?" Jeremy yelled.

"Listen up! Quit ditching class or you grounded. No discussion." Jenna yelled at him. Serves him right.

"Parental authority. I like it. Sleep tight." Jeremy says. I sigh loudly and shake my head with a smirk on my face.
