3. Don't play with fire

Adam wouldn't let me go home, he insisted that even though there was no physical pain, something internal might have happened and he wanted to make sure I was completely healthy. So I kept lying on the clinic bed reading one of those romance novels where the guy is a jerk and the girl is a real idiot who lets herself be manipulated, although for me that situation was quite unpleasant they were one of my favorite novels, it hurt to admit it, but it was one of my guilty pleasures.

When I was getting to the part where the guy confesses that he is in love with her the door to the room opened up in a hurry. I turned to see who it was and when I saw him standing I grimaced.

-What are you doing here? -I said and Dimitri moved forward to my bed.

-You are my fiancée, in less than two weeks we are going to get married and I have to find out from my sister that you have been hospitalized all day. -I sigh heavily and put my book aside.

-We are getting married against our will, besides it is still my life and I neglect who I want to know about my accident and who doesn't.

-Would you have preferred not to come? -he said and crossed his arms, so I applauded.

-They should give you an award for being the smartest person in the world. -He shook his head and ran a hand through his hair.

-You're not in kindergarten, you can't do this kind of thing. -I laughed and shook my head.

-He who can't do this kind of thing is you, you can't pretend to care about my health when it's not, you can't pretend that we'll have a happy marriage for three years, because it won't be like that, you can't pretend that you don't dislike this situation because you know it's not like that.

When I heard what Tarah was saying I sighed heavily and shook my head, I know this can work, there was a time when you loved me and I loved you and even though we are completely different people now I know this will not end in disaster.

-You really do have a lot of imagination Dimitri. -He said and turned to take his book, now if you'll excuse me I have a book to finish, you can leave. -Just as I was about to protest, the door opened and a tall young man in a white coat entered the room.

-I have good news for you, you can go now. -When he saw it, he smiled broadly as if his favorite person had just walked in, which I didn't understand why, but it had bothered me quite a bit.

-Really? -said Tarah and he nodded his head. He was about to speak, but finally he noticed my presence and settled into his robe.

-Excuse me, I'm Adam Brown, Tarah's doctor. -He said and walked over to where he was holding out his hand.

-Her future husband Dimitri Hughes. -I said and accepted his hand, listening to that guy wrinkle his nose and I was almost sure I heard a little laugh from Tarah.

-Okay. -He said and turned to see Tarah again.

-Fortunately, you were not harmed and can leave. The paperwork is ready so all you have to do is sign this paper. -Tarah took the paper and when she saw it, her face was a surprised look on her face.

-Why did you pay for everything? -I frowned and Dr. Brown shrugged.

-The accident was my fault so this was my way of making amends. -Tarah grimaced, but she played the part for me.

-Can you please go sign this? -I was about to protest, she couldn't treat me like dirt, but I remembered the promise I had made to Ava and I took the paper and turned around, when I was closing the door I heard her.

-Adam, it wasn't your fault and you didn't have to do this, now I feel guilty and I feel like I have to make it up to you somehow.

-Shit. -I said and closed the door completely. I felt used, displaced and the biggest idiot on the planet, I had come to look for her since Ava had told me about the accident and I felt that my duty was to be by her side, but this was the last straw, inviting a stranger to go out, who by the way had run her over, was stupid, immature and an act of rebellion just like the ones I always did without thinking. What gave me the most courage was that this was affecting me, affecting me more than I had to.

For, although our relationship at this time was not the best, there was a time when we did not lack affection, when both she and I loved each other and that feeling at least on my part was not completely gone.

I was almost sure that he had listened to me and that it was okay was just what I wanted to show Dimitri that I could play my own cards too and even though it wasn't Adam's fault my situation he had helped me a lot.

-So you're getting married? -asked Adam and I sighed heavily.

-Yes, I'm getting married in two weeks. -I couldn't help but say it, because I couldn't lie.

-You don't sound like a bride about to be married. -said Adam and I started playing with my hair.

-Have you ever done something you didn't want to do to help someone you did? -Adam thought for a moment, but then he nodded his head.

-Well, you see, this is the case. Since I was a little girl, my parents had already chosen a husband for me. -Adam was about to tell me something, but the door opened.

-There you go. -said Dimitri.

-Can we go? -I asked and nodded.

-The best thing that could have happened to me today was being run over. -I said jokingly and Adam smiled broadly.

-We'll be seeing each other," Adam said and left the office. Dmitri stared at me as if he knew a secret and I didn't, and I ended up ignoring him as I almost always did.
