There was a tap on the door, Aahana wondered who it could be at this late in the night. The clock read 1.00 am. She got out of her bed grumpily and hated the guts of the person at the door who woke her up from her sleep at this odd hour. She went to open the door and to her surprise, Roshni was here!
Roshni is her childhood friend. They have stuck together for as long as she could remember. Both of them had studied in the same school and went to the same college but had chosen different streams. Their friendship went quite far: from childhood to adulthood. The surprise was so pleasant that Aahana quickly woke up from her sleep, feeling guilty for even cursing.
Something was a bit off about Roshni but Aahana couldn't point out what exactly it was. Roshni didn't seem her usual self. Even her smile looked weaker than usual.
Roshni quickly hugged Aahana tightly after entering the apartment and they both sat on the stylish new lime green sofa Aahana had bought a few days ago. It was cosy.
"Hey, how's it going?? You came after such a long time! How come you remembered me today?", Aahana squinted her eyes in playful suspicion at her childhood friend and then wiggled her eyebrows.
"It's not okay", the clouds blasted with a thunderbolt as Roshni spoke, the crackling sound startled Aahana but Roshni sat perfectly straight and quiet, in a manner that was almost eerie.
Aahana gulped a lump.
"W-what do you mean? What happened?", Aahana's face was filled with worry now. She was suddenly in a serious mood. The atmosphere of the room had suddenly changed and Aahana was no stranger to it. Something serious seemed to have happened with Roshni. She was being odd today.
"I...", Roshni trailed off, it was as if she was unable to speak up. She was unable to speak a word as if the words were stuck inside her throat and refusing to come out of her mouth. The truth was too hard to let out.
"Go on, I'm listening", Aahana assured and encouraged her friend. Aahana waited patiently for Roshni to speak up as she pressed her hand, holding it.
"Things are not going well with Kartik", Roshni looked down at the floor. Tears welling up in her eyes.
"Why? What happened this time? Is Kartik still coming home late?", A little bit of anger welling up inside Aahana. She withdrew her hand.
"Yeah and .. that's not the only thing. He's been cheating on me!", Roshni burst into tears once she let the harsh words out of her mouth and the bitter truth was finally out in the open. She could no longer hold it in. It seemed to be choking and eating away at her.
Aahana gasped and patted her back. She then hugged her close.
"Oh no, Roshni. That's terrible! I can't believe Kartik would do this to you. I had my doubts honestly but I never thought it would come true", Aahana kept rubbing Roshni's back to give her some comfort as Roshni kept crying over her shoulder. She felt bad for her friend.
Roshni kept on bawling like a kid. She was so hurt that she could feel her heart heavy and drop into a deep pit of darkness.
Aahana hugged her closer. She kept quiet and tried to comfort her friend.
The sound of rain was soothing. After straight 10 minutes of crying, Roshni pulled a key out from her bag.
"How did you come to know he's cheating?", Aahana asked, curiosity laced in her sentence.
Roshni showed the key to Aahana. Aahana was confused, the confusion evidently plastered on her face.
"I found this key in his wallet. I suspect this is the spare key for that witch's flat", cursed Roshni as she huffed in anger. Her teary eyes filled with rage.
"Are you sure it's the key to her house?", Aahana questioned with scepticism, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah, I even went to her place", Roshni said quietly.
"What?! Wow, how did you manage to do that?", Aahana was surprised.
"With some courage, of course! I had to go and check for myself to believe, anyway", a dark unreadable expression was on her face as she spoke.
"So what did you find out?", Aahana asked calmly and curiously.
"Well, it really was an apartment of a woman", Roshni said with sadness reflecting in her eyes.
"Well... What will you do now, then?" Aahana looked at her friend with sadness in her eyes. She was worried about Roshni.
"What will I do?" Roshni took a pause and thought of her answer. "I'll kill her of course!"
"Hey, what the hell?? That's.. too drastic and crazy! You can't do that! What about the laws? That's a crime, Roshni!", Aahana shouted in worry. She was in the kitchen and preparing coffee for the two of them.
"It's not a crime if no one finds out", Roshni smirked. Her eyes looked crazy. They were bloodshot and reddish.
"You've gotta be kidding me. That is in no way a logical solution Roshni!", Aahana shouted trying to put some sense into her friend who went 360 - from sad to crazy in a split second. Aahana was even more worried now. She was pouring the coffee into their cups.
"Who says so? Haven't you heard? Everything is fair in love and war! And this is the perfect punishment for that wretched witch for snatching my man!", Roshni shouted in anger.
Aahana gave the coffee mug to Roshni and they both drank the coffee. Aahana and Roshni's faces grew darker before they sipped onto their coffees. Before blood gushed out of Roshni's mouth, she picked her revolver which was placed beside her and she shot her gun at Aahana.
*BANG!* a loud sound was heard amongst the crackling sound of the thunderbolt.
The next day, two dead bodies were discovered in Aahana's flat.
The newspaper for the day had an article printed with the headline "Two best friends kill each other for a man! One was cheating with the other's husband"
