Unrelenting Vengeance VII

Lentis held out his arms to either side of him and the ground began to rumble and shake. There was a surge of magic power coming out of Lentis as he used the spell. The dragon noticed it right away and turned its massive body as quickly as it could to face Lentis.

"Cover me!" he shouted at the knights. He only had one shot at this so he couldn't afford to mess it up. If the dragon dodged the attack or took flight, then it was all over.

"Everyone, protect the commander!" Rui shouted at the knights.

The knights all ran to Lentis and put themselves between him and the dragon. They then began bombarding the dragon with spells and created barriers in an attempt to slow it down. But despite all their efforts, it was futile. The dragon simply took every attack like it was nothing and broke through every barrier just by stomping on it. Left and right knights fell or retreated one after another until it was just Rui and a few other knights who were still blocking the dragon.

"D*mn it..." Rui couldn't do anything against the dragon with just her sword and she knew this. But she had to try anyway. Rui charged at the dragon with her weapon and waited for his front leg to come down before slashing at it. "Ha!"

*Clang!* The blade bounced off the dragon's hard scales without inflicting any damage. "Ha!" Rui swung her sword again and through sheer luck or God's guidance, the blade found a tear in the armor. The strike went through the scales and skin and cut the dragon's flesh, causing it to flinch as blood spilled out of its wound.

Rui jumped back as the blood came out. Upon hitting the ground, hot steam evaporated from it, showing that the blood was boiling hot and that she should avoid it. The dragon lifted its front leg up and looked at the place where Rui's blade struck. After examining the injury for just a second, it put its foot back down like nothing happened and continued its advance to Lentis.

To the dragon, the wound was nothing more than just a small cut or bug bite. It was nothing to worry about. However, it did agitate it a little and the dragon now shifted its focus from Lentis to Rui.

Perfect. Now that she had its attention, she ran away from Lentis, drawing the dragon away from him as he was preparing his spell. Rui ran as fast as her legs could allow her and didn't look back. Without turning, she could tell that everything behind her was on fire from the sound of the flames crackling.

"Everyone, brace yourselves! Rui, find cover!" Lentis shouted at the top of his lungs.

Rui looked around for a place where she could hide and found a half-burnt-down house to her right. She ran towards it and jumped through the hole in the wall which was charred black by fire. A wave of flames went by right above her head as she made it in, singing a few strands of her hair.

Rui slammed into the wooden floor with her entire body and rolled into the wall. "Oof!" She quickly pushed herself back up and wiped the dust from her clothes. She looked up at the wall in front of her and saw that the entire thing was black from getting blasted by the fire.

She took a few steps towards the hole she jumped in through before suddenly losing her balance when the ground started to shake. Rui grabbed onto the broken wall and felt a splinter pierce her skin, forcing her to retract her hand from it and fall to the ground. "Ah..."

Rui pulled the splinter out of her hand and took a look at it. Blood was oozing out from the cut on her palm. "What happened to my gloves?" Rui saw that there was a giant tear on her gloves that left more than half her hand exposed. When did she get this? She didn't recall doing anything that could cause it to rip like this.

Ah whatever, this was just a small cut that will heal given a bit of time. Rui crawled over to the hole in the wall and looked out of it. Through it, she saw the dragon shaking along with the floor and it was trying its best to take flight but couldn't get off the ground. Lentis was preventing it from doing so by restraining its four legs with the earth. The dragon's legs were shackled to the ground and the shaking wasn't because of Lentis' magic, but rather it was coming from the dragon struggling to break free.

The dragon tried to kill Lentis by breathing more fire at him but all its attempts failed due to the knights protecting him with their magic. But Rui knew that this plan wasn't going to work. The knights could only protect Lentis for so long and he could only keep the dragon grounded for so long as well. Soon enough, it will break free and kill them all. They needed to do something before that happened.

"Rui!" Lentis called out to her.

"What!?" she shouted back at the knight who was also her king now.

"I need you to go bring one of those siege weapons here!"

"Siege weapons!?" What siege weapons? They didn't have any siege weapons here in Silverfield.

"Those big ones that Otane brought!"

Suddenly, it all clicked together for Rui. "So that was his plan..." Lentis had planned to use his magic from the beginning to restrain the dragon so that it couldn't move. Otane's massive siege weapons were more than enough to get through its hard armor. And since the dragon was pinned down, it was a sitting duck. "I'm on it!"

Rui jumped over the wall and over the house. The shaking made it difficult for her to keep her balance when she hit the floor and she had to stumble a bit. "You two, come with me!" She ordered two of the knights who were closest to her to follow.
